That single sentence was the end of it, yet those words clearly meant he would follow my lead.

Even while reading the novel, I had felt sorrow over that woman’s death—but now I could save her. I was so overjoyed that a bright smile nearly broke out on my face, when I felt Sikar gently stroking my head.

However, this wasn’t the kind of head-pat one gives to an admirable child. It was more like…

“You’re very admirable for managing to persuade me. Every time Happy was admirable, I’d stroke their head just like this.”

‘Right. It felt exactly like petting a puppy!’

“You’re the first person I’ve ever stroked like this, so you may well feel proud. I’ll keep doing it whenever I find you admirable.”

“Alright, now can you please take your hand off my head?”

“Don’t be shy—enjoy it to your heart’s content. It’s not something that happens every day.”

Sikar clearly couldn’t read people’s expressions at all. Otherwise, he wouldn’t possibly think I was happy when he saw my scowling face.

Sikar kept stroking my head until we reached Kian’s room, only pulling his hand away when he needed to open the door.

Eager to see Kian, I hurried inside—but the room was pitch dark. Behind me, I heard Sikar closing the door.

I absolutely hated the dark. I was someone who cherished bright days spent with children far more than quiet nights meant for rest.

I could ride thrilling amusement rides, but I could never step into places like haunted houses. Even when sleeping, I was too afraid of the darkness to turn off the lights—I always had to keep them on.

Just as I turned to escape the suffocating blackness, Sikar caught hold of me.

“It’s alright. Don’t be afraid. It’s only the spirits of darkness summoned by Vika.”

‘Why did Vika make the room so dark?’

Just as that thought crossed my mind, beautiful flames appeared in the room. They vanished almost instantly, only to be replaced by lovely flames shaped like butterflies. Then came a heart-shaped flame that spread out beautifully.

I stood transfixed, gazing blankly at the dazzling display of flames before me. Right in front of my eyes, the flames shaped themselves into fairies that swirled gently around me.

Lost in the breathtaking sight, I barely noticed the room gradually brightening—until the fairies dissolved like smoke, revealing Kian and Vika. Vika then shrugged and said,

“My part ends here.”

Vika left the room as if she’d already done everything she could to help. Kian walked over to me, still looking dazed, and scratched the back of his head shyly before speaking.

“Thank you for becoming my mother. I wanted to properly express my gratitude… Mother.”

Th-this was exactly like the scene from the original story where Kian, grateful to Raydocs for rescuing and taking him in, performed a special event with Lucy and Luid.

In the original, the twins had turned off all the lights in the viscount’s study, after which Kian summoned flames to express his heartfelt thanks for being accepted.

But I wasn’t even the protagonist or a supporting character—heck, I wasn’t even a proper extra here. Was it really alright for someone like me to receive such a heartfelt gesture from Kian?

Overwhelmed by the tender affection Kian showed me, tears welled up and spilled down my cheeks. Kian just smiled softly and walked over to wrap me in a tight hug.

“Thank you… Mother.”

My biological mother was wide awake, watching everything happen—and hearing that word “Mother” made me feel strangely guilty. I held Kian tightly, silently vowing once again to find his birth mother for him.

“That’s far too kind of you, Kian. All I can do is try to be a good mother—and even that, I haven’t fully managed.”

“You’re already the best mother.”

Then I reached out my hand toward Sikar—an invitation to join our embrace.

Sikar stared at me as if completely uninterested, but perhaps remembering his promise to cooperate for Kian’s sake, he reluctantly approached, and we all hugged each other.

Truthfully, I hadn’t really wanted to hug Sikar either—but from my perspective, any opportunity to close the distance between Kian and Sikar was worth seizing.

To reinforce the idea that we were truly a family. It might help even more if I said this too.

“Please let our family live together in harmony.”

I looked pointedly at Sikar, urging him to repeat after me. He snorted, but eventually echoed my words.

“May our family live together in harmony.”

His tone sounded more like he was wishing for our family’s destruction—but I was satisfied just that he’d said it at all.

Lucy would run away two days later, and the children’s mother would pass away two days after that.

Since Gillian wanted to see Kian three days from now, we had exactly one week left. Thus, I insisted we spend this time bonding with Kian, and though Sikar showed clear signs of exhaustion, he agreed to cooperate.

First, since Kian had already given us such a meaningful event today, we decided to share dessert together after dinner.

And that dessert would be made by Sikar and me together. Of course, it wasn’t mutual agreement—Sikar only reluctantly rolled up his sleeves because I kept insisting that activities like this were necessary to get closer to Kian.

“With mountains of work waiting, wasting time baking dessert in the kitchen is ridiculous.”

“Raising a child takes time—that’s just how it is.”

Sikar, tying on an apron, turned his back to me as if he couldn’t bear to hear another word.

“Just tie this on.”

A villain wearing an apron—somehow both ill-suited and oddly fitting at the same time.

Word that Sikar was making dessert in the kitchen spread instantly through the duke’s mansion, prompting Andrea, Grandmother, Vika, and Durion to each drop by the kitchen in turn.

“My lord, you’ve come all the way into the kitchen yourself? I can’t imagine why. If lately the desserts the head chef has been serving don’t suit your taste, why not just say so? Everyone in the kitchen is terrified they’ll lose their jobs because of you stepping in.”

“There’s no need for such alarm, Andrea. Sikar is finally learning how to be a father—just leave him be.”

Meanwhile, Durion picked up the water glass Sikar had just used and scrutinized its contents suspiciously.

“Could it be that milady slipped some mind-control potion into the duke’s drink? Otherwise, there’s no way he’d set foot in the kitchen.”

Durion wasn’t wrong—anyone would agree Sikar didn’t look like his usual self.

Vika snatched the glass Durion had been examining and gave a sly smirk.

“If anything, I wish it had been instant poison instead of a mind-control potion. Now I’m almost disappointed.”

Sikar, who had been kneading dough, turned his head sharply as if annoyed by the noise. Durion puffed out his cheeks, struggling to suppress laughter at the flour dusting Sikar’s nose, while Vika sneered in amusement.

“Pff! M-milord… is that… is that flour on your nose?”

“Why? It suits me well. Maybe you should change your profession to head chef, Sikar.”

“Shut up and get out—all of you—before I kill you.”

His words sounded so chillingly sincere that Vika and Durion clapped their hands over their mouths, stifling laughter as they hurried out of the kitchen.

Though I’d assumed Sikar couldn’t cook at all, he surprisingly made an excellent cake. He even decorated it perfectly, leaving me staring at his creation in amazement.

“I never heard he was good at cooking.”

“I borrowed a bit of the head chef’s memory. This is far easier than using a Dreamcatcher. Besides, I learn anything instantly—it’s just natural talent.”

‘I already knew that.’

Sikar carried the dessert himself and dropped it onto the table in Kian’s room—but nothing changed.

Kian eyed Sikar suspiciously, yet picked up his fork as if deciding to eat it for my sake.

Kian’s eyes widened as he brought the first bite of cake to his mouth. His expression clearly showed he liked it.

“How does it taste?”

Kian nearly let his delight show before clearing his throat awkwardly.

“It’s… edible.”

That was practically the same as saying it was delicious. Sikar, seemingly satisfied with Kian’s reaction, gave a faint smirk.

“You’ve never tasted anything like this before, so it must be surprising. I won’t make it often, so savor it.”

With that, Sikar left the room as if he’d fulfilled his duty. I would’ve liked Kian to talk with him a bit longer, but even this much must have been difficult for him, so I let him go.

“Kian, the duke will make cakes for you often from now on. He was just shy earlier.”

“I don’t mind if he doesn’t. The cakes the head chef makes are delicious too.”

As expected—even after receiving a homemade cake, Kian still couldn’t fully open his heart until Sikar’s coldness faded from his eyes.

But if we kept doing something together every day, surely things would improve a little. What else did Kian like again? Right—origami.

“Kian, shall we play origami tomorrow?”

“Origami?”

“Yes. It’s folding colorful paper into shapes—it’ll be very fun.”

It’ll become one of your favorite games, Kian.

Kian didn’t yet know what it was, but the word “play” made him slightly excited.

“Okay, Mother. It sounds fun.”

“Then I’ll see you tomorrow, Kian.”

I kissed Kian’s forehead and left the room.

Where am I?

I was in a dark space where I couldn’t see a thing ahead. Outside, I could hear the sounds of fighting, but the words were indistinct.

Suddenly, I realized I was inside a closet. The moment I understood this, the closet door slowly opened, letting in a faint sliver of light. As the outside grew brighter, I could see through the crack the figures standing beyond.

They didn’t look human. They were monstrous beings, vaguely resembling dark, shadowy human forms. Unaware I was hiding in the closet, the monsters wandered outside, fighting among themselves.

Though I was terrified inside the closet, I couldn’t step out. The door seemed like it would swing open instantly if any of them grabbed it—filling me with dread.

Just then, a voice called out—and the closet door flew open.

“Yura!”

“Wh… who’s there…?”

The face that appeared was Sikar’s. He wore a frown, but he didn’t seem angry.

“Sikar…?”

“Yes. It’s me. Come out here.”

“I… I don’t want to… Th-there are monsters outside! I can’t go out!”

“I’ll help you so you never have this nightmare again—just come out.”

“I… I can’t! I can’t go!”

Sikar grabbed my arm and pulled, but I didn’t budge. I desperately wanted to leave this frightening closet—but an inexplicable, overwhelming fear held me back.

Then, as if from nowhere, he placed a lantern inside the closet.

“Your fear of leaving the closet is too strong—I can’t pull you out. So I’ll have to turn this memory into a good one instead.”

Sikar cupped my face gently in both hands and looked deeply into my eyes.

“This will remain a good memory now. A beautiful, wonderful memory.”

And then Sikar kissed me.

My Step-brother Is Obsessed With Me (Female-dominant)

A gentle female protagonist vs pitiful in the early stage, and a sick male protagonist in the later stage

Cheng Songer transmigrated into the body of a vicious cannon fodder female supporting character with the same name as her in a female-dominant novel.

In the original story, the cannon fodder female supporting character was inhumane, committing domestic violence, gambling excessively, being lustful, and even wanting to sell her stepbrother to a brothel for money.

As luck would have it, she just happened to transmigrate at this time.

Seeing Cheng Qingzhi biting his lip, enduring the tears in his eyes, looking pitiful, her heart softened.

She stuffed the money back into the Madam’s hand and reached out to him.

“Brother, come home with me.”

I wonder how long it’ll take Sikar to develope feelings of love for a HUMAN and not a pet will develop. Also wonder how long it’ll take for Yura to develop feelings for Sikar.

The continued misunderstand that she likes him is hilarious. How can Sikar twist everything to be that she likes him?😂😂

  2. Artemtisforaday Chapter 37

I still don’t get how her spending his money makes him impressed? 😂🤣

  3. Artemtisforaday Chapter 40

Honestly? Good job Sikar. The twins (especially Luid) and brats and should stop fighting all the time. Their dad isn’t doing get there. And I’m not a fan of the “gentle parenting” when the kids are absolute terrors that need a more firm hand.

"I'll finish hugging you properly back at the ducal manor."

Is he just finding any excuse to hug her? I’m still trying to figure out if he’s starting to have feelings or not! Or if he’s just not right in the head and does these things out of obligation or sense of duty? Idk.
