I covered Kian’s eyes in preparation for the female lead’s future blanket kick.

Every time she recalls their first meeting, our heroine will be terribly embarrassed, so out of love for my favorite, I should protect her from such a thing.

Then I whispered to Kian.

“I’m just covering your eyes for a moment because Lucy might feel embarrassed.”

Kian smiled, clearly understanding what I meant.

“I was just about to turn my body away myself. She might feel ashamed later if she sees my face.”

Good heavens. What is this? Is it the protagonist’s innate courtesy?

‘Look at this, Sikar. He’s only seven years old and already has such manners! You should take notes!’

Sikar showed no interest in us at all; he merely frowned as he watched Lucy and Luid.

“What a sight.”

When that low, heavy baritone voice echoed through the study room, Lucy looked at Sikar as if she’d seen the Grim Reaper himself, her lips trembling and her shoulders shaking.

In other words, she was getting ready to cry.

Raydocs quickly picked Lucy up and carried her out, saying,

“I’ll be back shortly.”

Though Raydocs hurried away fast, Lucy’s wailing “Waaah!” soon echoed from the far end of the corridor.

Luid tried to hastily wipe his face with his sleeve, but it didn’t clean at all—instead, the smudge just spread further sideways.

Luid turned to face us with an unwelcoming expression and said,

“Who are you?”

“Um… well, we are…”

As I slowly thought about how to introduce myself and spoke hesitantly, Luid turned away dismissively, walked over to his desk, and sat down.

“Never mind.”

While I was startled by Luid’s extremely rude behavior, I suddenly felt heat rising from Kian’s hand, which I was holding. Glancing down, I saw tiny embers flickering from Kian’s palm.

I quickly whispered into Kian’s ear.

“Kian, you haven’t forgotten our promise not to summon anything like this outside, right?”

“But I can’t tolerate anyone being rude to Mother.”

Kian’s eyes seemed to blaze with fire. I gently stroked his back and said,

“But acting like this could put us in even greater danger. I want you to keep your promise to me.”

Kian looked at me with slightly downcast eyes, then nodded as if he understood.

“Yes, Mother.”

“Once the time comes when it’s safe for you to summon spirits outside, you can wait until then. Understand?”

“Yes… I’m sorry.”

“All I want is for you to get along well with your friends.”

Only then did I feel the warm heat in Kian’s hand finally dissipate.

In the original story, Kian didn’t harm Luid because of the debt he owed to Raydocs, but now that no such debt existed, Kian might very well set Luid’s hair on fire.

Better be extra careful in advance. After all, Luid would later become Kian’s right-hand man.

After a short while, even the previously aloof Luid was led out by Raydocs, washed clean, and changed into fresh clothes. Both Lucy and Luid looked completely transformed, as if they were new people.

Raydocs first sent Lucy and Luid back into the study room, then came out to the corridor where we were waiting.

“I apologize for the delay in preparation. You may come pick up Kian before dinner. Kian, shall we go in now?”

As I released Kian’s hand and tried to cheer him on with an encouraging “You can do it!”, I found it surprisingly hard to turn away.

“My lord, couldn’t you just let me stay and see how Kian adjusts today?”

Goodness. I was saying something even the most overbearing mothers wouldn’t dare say.

Though partly curious about how Kian would get along with Lucy, I was ultimately refused.

“As a fellow parent, I understand Duchess Blake’s feelings, but I’m afraid that would be very difficult. Then excuse me. I’ll see you again later this afternoon.”

‘It doesn’t seem like you understand my feelings at all…’

Raydocs, oblivious to my feelings to an almost callous degree, closed the study room door behind him.

Since Kian was of royal blood, even Sikar couldn’t access his memories.

I turned and followed Sikar as he strode nonchalantly down the corridor.

“Sikar, could you possibly see Kian’s memories through me?”

“Dreams are possible because of spirits, but memories aren’t, since there are no spirits involved. If I could see royal memories, I’d have already found Veronia through Gillian’s memories.”

‘True. In that case, you’d have found Veronia first.’

“Besides, even if you could see them, what would you do? Leave it to Raydocs. He’s not the type to harm Kian.”

“I’m just curious whether he’s getting along well with the other children.”

“That’s something Kian will figure out himself. Though gentle-hearted, he’s no fool—he’ll manage just fine.”

What an insensitive man, not understanding a parent’s heart.

“How about preparing to greet Grandmother? She’ll be arriving soon.”

So much time had already passed. The news that Grandmother was coming lifted my sinking spirits just a little.

“Is Grandmother well enough now?”

“They’re expecting her condition to improve temporarily, so she’s coming for a visit. But she’ll have to leave again.”

“Again? Is there no word on when she might fully recover? Is the treatment at the Grand Cathedral not showing any improvement?”

“The priests say they can’t be certain. They say dementia is incurable here, just as it is where you come from. They claim only a miracle could fully restore her, so all we can do is hope for one.”

“I’ll pray too… for Grandmother to get better…”

“At least, they say her dementia symptoms don’t appear while she’s at the Grand Cathedral. But once she leaves, there’s no telling what might happen.”

“I see…”

Even in this place overflowing with magic and divine power, dementia couldn’t be fully cured. It made me strangely sad.

Suddenly, Sikar stopped walking in the corridor, crossed his arms, and turned to face me.

“Are you crying right now?”

As soon as I heard that, I instinctively stepped back.

“What? Are you going to hug me again if I cry?”

I said defensively, but Sikar just gave a skeptical snort—and then actually reached out, grabbed my head, and pulled me against his chest.

“It’s utterly disgraceful for us to be embracing like this in someone else’s marquisate.”

I had to admit he was right on that point, yet Sikar was contradictorily holding me despite his words.

“But since your concern for our Grandmother is so admirable, I’ll make an exception—even if it’s not a proper place for it.”

“What even is a ‘proper place’?”

“A place where it wouldn’t be disgraceful for me to hug you anytime I want.”

He might not feel embarrassed himself, but I certainly was—and I was terrified someone might see us.

Of course, the marquisate’s servants were respectable enough not to spread rumors about us embracing in the manor, but I still felt utterly embarrassed and didn’t want to be caught like this.

“I wasn’t sobbing that badly. You can let go now.”

Sikar released me and said,

“I’ll finish hugging you properly back at the ducal manor.”

What?!

“Now, let’s go.”

Sikar spun around and strode down the corridor, and I trailed after him like a duckling.

“It’s fine. I’m okay.”

“It’s a reward for being admirable.”

“I said it’s fine already.”

Although these were strangers he’d never met before, Kian didn’t feel entirely unfamiliar with them.

It must have been because of the warm auras emanating from them.

He had only ever seen that kind of warm aura from Yura, who had become his mother—but now he saw it radiating from Raydocs and the twins as well.

“Before we begin the lesson, let’s take a moment to introduce ourselves. Kian, these children are twins and your age. Lucy and Luid—these will be your classmates going forward. Now then, why don’t you greet each other? Who’d like to go first?”

Lucy hopped down from her chair and eagerly raised her hand.

“I’ll do it! Me!”

She then strutted proudly up to Kian and extended her hand.

“My name is Lucy. Though I probably looked a mess earlier.”

Kian took Lucy’s offered hand and replied,

“I didn’t see it.”

Lucy’s deliberately haughty expression instantly brightened.

She’d been mortified thinking she’d shamed the family by making such a scene in front of her father’s guest—but now she felt immensely relieved.

“Well, that’s a relief then.”

Lucy smiled cheerfully.

Meanwhile, Luid still wore a displeased look. He wasn’t happy at all that the young master of House Blake—who had a poor relationship with House Yucanadar—was now in his home.

Luid glared almost fiercely at Kian and said,

“Yeah. I’m Luid.”

“My name is Kian.”

Kian extended his hand as a gesture of greeting, but Luid crossed his arms stubbornly, clearly refusing to shake it.

“But it’s weird. House Blake has a bad relationship with our family—so why are you here?”

“Huh?”

“Didn’t your house just seize our minerals not long ago?!”

Luid huffed indignantly, and Raydocs sighed deeply, pressing a hand to his forehead.

“Luid, that was adult business. And they didn’t ‘seize’ it—they handled the rampaging spirits of destruction in Yucanadar on our behalf.”

“But they demanded a huge sum of money! And threatened us fiercely too! I saw it all myself!”

The spirits of destruction had been deliberately unleashed because House Yucanadar refused to support the current king—and Raydocs knew this well.

The matter had been officially resolved when House Blake received the mineral payment and installed spirit traps.

Luid placed his hands on his hips, thrust his stomach forward toward Kian, and declared,

“If you want to be friends with us, give back our minerals!”

Luid spoke with such self-righteous confidence, as if demanding what was rightfully his, that Raydocs felt a sharp throb in his temples.

“Luid, that’s enough.”

At that moment, Lucy sharply smacked the back of Luid’s head.

“Hey! Why’s it his fault, you idiot?!”

“Ow! Why’d you hit me?!”

“You’re embarrassing the family with your nonsense, you fool!”

“You! You crybaby!”

Raydocs placed a finger over each of their lips, silencing them immediately.

“Both of you, quiet! Fighting in front of your new friend is very unbecoming behavior. You’ve never had new friends before, so I’ll excuse your lack of knowledge until now—but from this moment on, you must get along nicely with your new friend. Haven’t I always told you siblings should be kind to each other?”

But Luid only stuck out his lower lip sulkily. Raydocs decided it was more important to ensure Kian didn’t misunderstand than to reason with Luid.

“Kian, don’t pay too much attention to what Luid said. Though I did suffer a bit of hardship then, it wasn’t as Luid claimed—that the Duke extorted us.”

“Yes, my lord.”

“Now then, shall we begin the lesson? Have you studied history before?”

“No.”

“How about geography?”

“No.”

“Then… philosophy or social studies perhaps…?”

Kian stroked his chin thoughtfully, then suddenly clapped his hands as if remembering something.

“I’ve read fairy tales!”

“Pffft—fairy tales?!”

Raydocs looked at his own child with a resigned expression, as if wondering what to do with him.

“We’ve only just gotten through fairy tales ourselves, Luid.”

Raydocs’ stern look at Luid carried an unspoken message: don’t tease your new friend. Luid understood this perfectly and answered glumly,

“Yes.”

Lucy, ever the predator spotting the perfect opportunity, immediately seized the chance to mock Luid.

“How pathetic.”

“What?!”

“I said pathetic! You’re pathetic!”

Though such bickering was an everyday occurrence at the marquisate, it was a completely unfamiliar sight to Kian.

Fairy tales always said that different races should get along harmoniously—but here, they weren’t even different races! They were the same race, members of the same family, and even twins, yet they fought as if desperate to devour each other.

Kian simply watched with wide, curious eyes, but to Raydocs, Kian wasn’t just any young noble—he was the royal grandson of the kingdom, and Raydocs couldn’t help but feel deeply embarrassed.

“Are you really going to keep acting like this on the very first day your new friend arrives, Luid?”

Luid rarely listened to his father normally, but today he was especially defiant.

“It’s because you had to bring the young master of House Blake here! I refuse to get along with that brat! Throw him out right now!”
