When Patria opened the window, the wind blew in. The wind from Torkan carried a salty tang mixed with a faint fishy scent.

Roxiana still found this air—so different from that of the Kingdom of Khanta—utterly unfamiliar.

The Kingdom of Khanta lay deep in the heart of the continent, far from the sea. Through its capital city, Tephus, flowed the wide Bebe River. Along its banks, street vendors lined up in rows, and when the sun set, their lights twinkled like stars, creating a breathtakingly beautiful sight.

Roxiana had truly loved that scene.

Even near the Bebe River, there had been a watery scent, but it was entirely different from the smell here. Patria had said this briny, salty odor came from the sea.

‘The sea…’

Roxiana had never seen the sea. Before being sold into slavery, she’d been placed aboard a merchant ship, but confined inside a crate, she never saw what the outside world looked like.

“The sea is truly beautiful. When you stand on the shore, it seems as if the sea and sky meet. Gazing at it makes your heart feel wide open. Someday, Lady Roxiana, you should go see it yourself. It’ll lift your spirits.”

What could it possibly mean—the sea and sky meeting?

The curiosity that briefly stirred quickly faded.

‘What’s the point of knowing? What’s the point of seeing? Even if I learn or see it, there’s no one left to share it with. What good is it for me to take it all in alone?’

Roxiana turned her gaze away from the window and closed her eyes.

She hadn’t eaten anything for several days. Afraid of worrying Patria, she’d tried her best to eat, but even swallowing a sip of water felt impossible. Even when she managed to get a spoonful of soup into her mouth, she ended up vomiting it back up.

How could she possibly eat when her family was surely wandering lost in some dark well, unable to find peace? Every time she put something in her mouth, fragments of her parents—packed inside that crate—flashed before her eyes, twisting her stomach.

Vividly returning to her mind was that horrifying scene—the sharp, merciless voice of Elise.

“We threw them into the well and sealed the entrance, so your family won’t even smell Adelia’s fragrance when spring comes!”

Each memory pierced Roxiana’s heart like a clear, sharp blade. Combined with prolonged hunger, physical pain, and overwhelming sorrow, her health deteriorated rapidly.

Every time she closed her eyes in bed, she felt as if her whole body was being swallowed by the soft mattress and sinking into darkness. And invariably, voices would follow.

Many voices, yet sounding like one—the same voices she often heard in childhood—kept coming back, growing increasingly irritating.

‘Rotti, I understand how you feel, but please drink at least a sip of water. Humans can’t survive without water.’

‘Soon, the water in this region will become undrinkable. Drink as much as you can before then.’

‘Or come out to the garden, Rotti. We’ll hold you.’

‘Rotti, don’t die. You’re the only human left who can speak with us.’

Roxiana wanted to scream, begging them to stop calling her Rotti—to stop using that tender nickname her family had once used, to stop forcing her to relive those now-lost memories.

But she lacked even the strength to protest, so she simply endured the longing, sorrow, and nagging noise.

As she lay there with her eyes shut, a rich, sweet aroma filled the room. It must be mealtime again.

For others, this might be a long-awaited moment, but for Roxiana, it felt like torture. Patria’s hopeful gaze, the chefs’ care poured into the dishes, the efforts of farmers and fishermen who grew or caught the ingredients—all of it weighed heavily on Roxiana, already struggling under her burdens.

“Lady Roxiana, it seems the chefs have truly outdone themselves today.”

Patria remained cheerful despite receiving no reply.

“Look at this—it really looks delicious.”

Feeling guilty for ignoring her completely, Roxiana barely managed to turn her head. A multi-tiered trolley had been wheeled into the bedroom, laden with various dishes.

Quail roasted until the skin was crisp, clams, a hearty soup made with grilled fish, a fresh salad dressed in tangy fruit vinaigrette, soft bread baked with generous butter, cheese, milk, jam, fruit…

A feast beyond the dreams of an ordinary person lay spread across the table.

“I’m sorry, Patria. I just…”

Nausea rose in her throat. Roxiana clapped a hand over her mouth. Seeing her struggle to suppress her gag reflex, Patria’s eyebrows drooped with concern.

She’d already been thin when they first met days ago, but now she looked even more wasted. Her bony forearms and hands seemed pitiful.

If only she could manage a few spoonfuls of soup—but Roxiana couldn’t even swallow a sip of water properly. It wasn’t deliberate refusal; her own body instinctively rejected everything, so there was no way to blame her.

Patria turned to wheel the trolley away, then noticed Floyd standing in the sitting area just outside the bedroom.

“Your Highness.”

Patria quickly bowed her head and gave a slight curtsy. Floyd barely acknowledged her greeting as he stared at the untouched food still sitting on the trolley.

“Has the princess eaten nothing again?”

“Yes, Your Highness. She seems too heartbroken…”

“How many days has it been?”

Patria’s heart sank with fear. If she admitted the princess hadn’t eaten since the first day, she worried Floyd might erupt in anger—but she answered honestly anyway.

“She hasn’t eaten a thing since the first day. Even when she manages a spoonful of soup, she ends up vomiting it all back up, so she hasn’t even drunk a sip of water.”

“You mean she hasn’t had any water this whole time?”

“Yes.”

Floyd closed his eyes as if trying to suppress his emotions. A wave of intense heat washed over Patria. Fortunately, it wasn’t hot enough to burn, but she still flinched and stepped backward in surprise.

Floyd picked up a tray of fruit from the trolley and walked into the bedroom.

Roxiana lay in bed with her eyes shut, her sunken cheeks and pallid lips making her look almost like a corpse.

Floyd placed the tray on the nightstand beside the bed and spoke.

“Princess.”

At the sound of his voice, Roxiana opened her eyes. Her gaze, previously drifting aimlessly through empty space, slowly focused on Floyd.

For a moment, she stared at him blankly, as if not recognizing who he was, then painfully struggled to sit up and get out of bed.

Beneath the blanket, her body was revealed. Even dressed in a simple dress, her extreme thinness was obvious.

So shocked was Floyd by her fragile, breakable frame that he didn’t even register what she was doing—until she’d already knelt on the floor, forehead pressed to the ground.

“This slave awaits her master’s command.”

Her voice was so faint it seemed to scatter before even reaching his ears.

Floyd was speechless. She was trembling so hard from exhaustion that even staying upright must have been a struggle—yet she insisted on performing such an act. No one had expected this.

“Are you mocking me? Or are you doing this on purpose just to provoke my anger?”

Roxiana offered no reply. Her platinum hair spilled carelessly over the rug, irritating Floyd’s nerves.

He roughly grabbed her arm, pulled her up, and sat her back on the bed.

“If you pull that stunt again, princess, I swear I’ll really lose my temper.”

Though spoken like a threat, her eyes—gazing up at him—remained utterly steady, showing no trace of fear or hesitation.

“I heard you haven’t been eating. Planning to starve yourself to death, then?”

Again, Roxiana stayed silent.

Stubborn fool.

“Fine! Do you think if you starve to death here, I’ll get so angry that I’ll just toss your body somewhere without ceremony? Or did you bribe someone? Did someone promise to throw you into the sea the moment you die? If that’s the case, why not just bite your tongue off right now? It’d hurt less than starving!”

Floyd’s voice grew louder, yet Roxiana’s face remained expressionless as a doll—showing neither fear nor sorrow. That blank mask threw Floyd’s thoughts into utter chaos.

She simply sat there, quietly—so why did the image of her inside his mind rampage so violently?

She was the one who’d lost her country and family. Why was he the only one seething and losing control?

Floyd’s anger surged. He grabbed a piece of fruit from the tray at random. Squeezing it hard in his fist, the ripe orange burst, its juice running down his copper-toned hand.

He grasped her delicate chin, lifting her face, then rubbed his juice-slicked fingers against her lips. The tangy-sweet liquid flowed down his fingers, moistening her parched lips.

Roxiana clenched her jaw, determined not to eat—but the tart-sweet juice slipped through the tiny gap between her lips, teasing her tongue. Her body, which had rejected even water, reacted instinctively to the fresh fruit.

His fingers, coated with orange pulp, slipped into her slightly parted lips. Rubbing the pulp into her mouth, he said,

“Your maids must be failing in their duties. It seems I have to open your mouth myself to get you to eat.”

Provoked by his mocking tone, Roxiana instinctively bit down hard on his finger with her front teeth—but he didn’t even flinch.

“Yes, Princess—go ahead and chew on my finger. You have to eat and swallow something, or you’ll never have the strength to stand up to my ridiculous taunts. Go on, scratch my face if you must.”

Only then did Roxiana realize—he was trying to enrage her into finding the will to live. After all, feeling humiliated by mockery required having the will to live in the first place.

Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away

This is also on my reread list!

This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.

Definitely worth a read, y’all!

The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.

But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.

Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.

I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.

The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.

As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
