The moment she recalled her steadfast, dignified knight who had guarded her since before she even came of age, Roxiana couldn’t hold back her tears any longer.

“Robert!”

Overwhelmed by grief over losing her family, she had failed to remember the absence of others—hadn’t even mourned those who protected her or those loyal to the Franche Royal Family.

What a selfish princess she was.

How many people had died simply because they were loyal? How many had lost their families?

She remembered, one by one, the faces of servants and knights who always smiled at her whenever they met in the Idel Palace. Robert’s meaningless death and Martha being dragged away freshly tore at Roxiana’s heart once more.

The bathwater rippled with Roxiana’s sobs, but she remained unaware of it, weeping for a long while.

“Lady Roxiana, are you alright?”

Worried after waiting too long without Roxiana emerging, Patria knocked on the bathroom door. Roxiana, who had been burying her face in her hands and screaming in despair, hastily scooped up water to wash her face.

“I’m fine. I’ll be out soon.”

Roxiana sank deep into the tub, then rose and dried herself with a towel. She put on the fresh clothes Patria had prepared and stepped out of the bathroom. Patria was waiting by the dressing table, holding a comb.

“Let me comb your hair, Lady Roxiana.”

“It’s alright. I can do it myself.”

Seeing Patria’s troubled expression, Roxiana added,

“Patria, I’m not truly a princess. His Grace just calls me that as he pleases, so you don’t need to treat me so kindly. I’ll tell His Grace how wonderfully you’ve looked after me.”

“But, Lady Roxiana—”

“Every time you’re kind to me, I feel like a princess again. And that’s… truly unbearable.”

Roxiana gently took the comb from Patria’s hand.

“So please, Patria, just be comfortable around me.”

Patria, looking flustered, said nothing, and Roxiana felt sorry for her.

Patria must have dreamed of serving noble ladies when she became a maid at the Grand Ducal Palace, yet here she was, forced to care for someone like a slave—it must be confusing. Despite that, she had always treated Roxiana with such respect and warmth, which made Roxiana feel awkward.

Not wanting to see her own reflection in the dressing table mirror, Roxiana took the comb and walked toward the window in the sitting room. From there, she could look down upon the gardens of the Lily Palace.

True to its role as a palace for honored guests, the Lily Palace gardens were beautifully arranged. A fairly large pond lay at its heart, and in the center stood an artificial island with a small pavilion large enough for two people. Delicate lace fabric draped the edges of the pavilion’s white roof.

A bridge painted white connected the island to the shore, and atop that bridge stood two children.

Roxiana stopped combing her hair and stared at them.

The children were hanging from the railing, throwing stones into the pond, and in that instant, she was pulled back into the past.

‘My nephews and nieces…’

Roxiana dropped the comb and turned away.

‘Those are my nieces and nephews.’

She ran out of the room without hearing Patria calling after her, racing down the corridor. Despite not having fully recovered, she found strength somewhere—running down the stairs without stopping, sprinting toward the garden.

She dashed between the long flower beds of the spacious garden. The closer she got to the pond, the clearer the children’s figures became.

“Lady Roxiana!”

Patria called after her, but Roxiana didn’t hear. Her entire attention was fixed on the children on the bridge.

A boy teasing the girl who seemed to be his younger sister.

Her sweet, beloved little nieces and nephews.

“Priscin! Winnial!”

The two children turned at Roxiana’s shout from the foot of the bridge. The moment she saw their startled expressions, harsh reality struck her like a blow.

The comforting scene surrounding her dissolved and vanished, replaced by a sight entirely unlike the Idel Palace.

They weren’t Priscin and Winnial. These children looked slightly older than her nieces and nephews, taller and different in appearance.

Only then did Roxiana keenly feel their absence.

‘Ah, my nieces and nephews are gone. They were slain by cruel blades and thrown into a well—dying without knowing anything, falling into that dark, damp place.’

The moment reality sank in, Roxiana collapsed. Patria rushed over and caught her before she crumpled to the ground. The children on the bridge also ran to her, each grasping one of her arms.

Roxiana lowered her head to look at the children struggling to support her.

Patria said,

“Lady Roxiana, are you alright? You’re still unwell—you shouldn’t run like that.”

The children stared up at her, their eyes filled with both worry for her and anxiety over being caught playing here.

Now that she looked closely, she couldn’t understand how she’d mistaken them for her nieces and nephews—their appearances were so different. Her nieces and nephews had pale, almost translucent skin, while these children had sun-kissed, copper-toned complexions.

“I’m sorry…”

Then, the boy spoke.

“We’re sorry for sneaking in here.”

Realizing they’d misunderstood why she was staring, Roxiana quickly replied,

“It’s alright. You can keep playing.”

“Really? Papa said we weren’t supposed to come here.”

“It’s fine. I’m staying here now, so it’s okay.”

She didn’t care who their father was. Seeing them exchange knowing smiles at her permission made her feel, for the first time in ages, like she could breathe again.

After the children returned to the pond, Roxiana sat on a bench a short distance away. The stone bench was cold.

“Lady Roxiana, the wind is chilly. You should probably go inside.”

Though Patria fidgeted anxiously as she spoke, Roxiana kept her gaze on the children and replied,

“Just a little longer. Let me stay here just a bit more.”

“Then I’ll fetch a blanket for you at least. You’ll catch a cold otherwise.”

Even after Patria left, Roxiana couldn’t tear her eyes away from the children—watching them toss stones into the pond, pluck flowers, bicker playfully—and thinking of her nieces and nephews.

Most sibling pairs around that age were like this: playing together one moment, quarreling the next. In every scene, she saw echoes of her nieces and nephews, and even memories of herself and her older brothers from childhood.

Patria returned and draped the blanket over Roxiana’s shoulders. Roxiana tucked the edges of the blanket and said softly,

“Patria, sit comfortably too.”

Patria would never have dared imagine sitting beside a princess, but fearing refusal would distress Roxiana, she obediently took a seat beside her.

This was the first time Roxiana had moved on her own since becoming like a lifeless doll. Uncertain whether this was good or bad, Patria kept glancing at her.

Yesterday evening, when she’d met the elderly maid Jiloa, the woman had nodded repeatedly upon hearing Roxiana had started eating again.

—”That’s good, truly good. As her health gradually returns, she’ll start noticing other things too. At first, she’ll only see what she’s lost, but slowly, she’ll begin taking interest in other things as well.”

Though sorrow still filled her completely now, Jiloa said new things would gradually push aside those painful memories, reducing the time spent in anguish.

Hearing those words, Patria recalled the time her secret crush married her friend. Back then, she’d cried as if the sky had fallen, her mind so consumed by him that she thought her heart might tear open and kill her.

But as she ate meals with her family, fussed over her annoying siblings, ran errands, ate street food at festivals, and watched clowns perform, she eventually reached a point where she no longer thought of him at all.

‘What the princess suffered is far sadder than my heartbreak, of course…’

Still, she hoped Roxiana might slowly emerge from her sorrow, just as she herself once had.

“I had nieces and nephews. They were a bit younger than those children.”

At that moment, Roxiana murmured in a thin voice. Delighted that Roxiana had shared something about herself, Patria eagerly asked,

“Where are your nieces and nephews now…?”

She stopped mid-sentence, biting her tongue—she’d already heard what had happened to Roxiana’s family.

Roxiana neither wept, smiled, nor answered. She simply watched the children in silence.

Patria scolded herself inwardly, frantically wondering how to fix such a foolish slip of the tongue.

Just then, the children who’d been playing in the flower bed and glancing over suddenly jumped up and ran toward them. In the younger girl’s hand was a small bouquet of wildflowers tied together with grass stems.

The girl’s plump cheeks turned pink as she held out the bouquet.

“Fairy lady.”

At the child’s words, Roxiana’s eyes widened.

“It’s a present.”

Though her gaze had been wandering through another time even as she looked at the children before her, her eyes finally focused on the bouquet offered right in front of her. Her golden-rimmed emerald eyes shimmered, trembling slightly.

Roxiana raised both hands. Her dry fingers trembled faintly. After a brief hesitation, they closed around the small, sparse, yet deeply endearing gift before her.

Something warm seemed to flow into her through the snapped flower stems.

Roxiana buried her face in the bouquet and wept soundlessly.

Male lead is a Love-Obsessed Merman

When he discovers she has gone, he risks everything to pursue her on land, enduring agonizing pain to transform his tail into human legs…

One-line summary: Male lead chases female lead. The male lead’s love is a bit sick, an invincible love brain.

Synopsis

During a voyage at sea, Jiang Yang accidentally captures a merman.

Servant: I heard that mermen are fierce and brutal.

Jiang Yang looks at the merman obediently rubbing her palm like a puppy: “You call this fierce and brutal?”

Servant: I heard that mermen have no human nature.

Jiang Yang looks at the merman with wet puppy eyes, obsessively calling her ‘A Yang’ like a childish infant: “You call this having no human nature?”

With great difficulty, she releases the merman back into the sea and returns to shore.

Who would have thought that in less than half a month, the merman, who should have been freely wandering in the South China Sea, would shed his scales, endure the pain of losing his tail, transform into human legs, and come ashore to find her?

He kneels at her feet, rubbing her palm, with merman tears rolling down: “A Yang, don’t abandon me.”
