The voice was too faint to immediately identify its owner. However, thanks to the other party’s incessant and inconsiderate babbling, Natasha finally succeeded in recognizing who it belonged to.

It was none other than Charlotte, who had just moments ago been acting kindly toward the Duchess.

Meliana and Vanessa seemed to be trying to restrain Charlotte’s rudeness. Though they repeatedly warned her about her impertinence, Charlotte ignored them and kept talking.

“Oh my, you all react as if I said something unforgivable. Of course, as a maid assigned to serve the Duchess, those words shouldn’t have been spoken. But be a little honest—your family struggled so hard to break through that fierce competition and enter this house, only to end up serving a princess from a fallen kingdom as your lady. Charlotte’s pent-up resentment poured out in full. Apparently stung by her peers’ criticism instead of the support she’d expected, she grew even more agitated.

“Besides, even the Duchess herself seemed aware of her place. Didn’t you all clearly see and hear it? Because of her husband, she receives treatment far beyond her station—surely even she must feel ashamed.”

It didn’t take long for someone’s kindness to be twisted into condescension. Through Charlotte’s fabrication, Natasha was instantly reduced to a humble princess from a ruined kingdom who knew her place.

Charlotte’s slander didn’t deeply shock Natasha. In fact, in her previous life, this maid had been one of those who disparaged the Duchess, so Natasha had anticipated she’d torment her this way again in this life too.

Natasha paused, pondering.

Must she confront even those who posed no threat to her? Was it truly necessary for her to step forward and point out the other’s rudeness?

“She only holds that position because of the Duke’s affection—if she loses his love, she’ll have nothing left. If she can’t even be treated as a proper wife, she certainly shouldn’t expect to be treated as a Duchess, right?”

The servants who claimed she deserved mistreatment simply for being a princess of a fallen kingdom had despised the Duchess by every possible means.
