When I Let Go of Obsession, I Got Obsessed (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 3
“Ugh!”
While feeling the cool breeze through the open window, Liz was practicing walking.
Thanks to diligently undergoing rehabilitation training for several days, walking was noticeably easier than before.
The sweat beading on her forehead from the rare physical exertion felt refreshing. She wanted to walk a bit more.
Liz stepped out into the hallway through the open door.
Seeing no one around, it seemed to be the servants’ break time.
Liz advanced to the central staircase. Just as she was about to turn back, using it as a midpoint, she realized her body craved a bit more strenuous stimulation.
‘Let’s go down a few steps.’
The physician had said stairs were still too much, but that was two days ago. And today, she felt unusually good.
Liz held the railing and stepped down one step.
It required far more strength than walking on flat ground. Even after just one step, her legs were trembling.
‘That’s enough for today.’
With her body just beginning to recover, she thought it best not to push further, as another injury might mean a lifetime in a wheelchair.
Turning back, Liz lifted one foot to climb the stairs. But had her strength given out in that moment?
Her leg suddenly buckled, and her center of gravity tipped backward.
She quickly grabbed the railing, but she didn’t have enough grip strength to correct her already tilting balance.
‘Oh no, I’m done for!’
Liz tightly shut her eyes.
But then.
Her body, which had tilted at an impossible angle with no hope of recovery, stopped moving and stayed still. It even felt as cozy as being wrapped in a cloud. What was going on?
Liz cautiously opened her eyes.
“Are you alright, miss?”
Cain was holding her up in his arms.
Relief that she was safe came second to another thought.
‘Why is it you again?’
She was so embarrassed that she almost wished she had fallen instead.
Misinterpreting her embarrassment, Cain said,
“Oh dear, you must be quite startled. I’ll carry you to your bedroom.”
“No, I’m fine.”
Liz quickly replied.
Of course, she had no strength left to walk to her bedroom, but she’d rather crawl than be carried in this man’s arms.
Cain, smiling brightly, said,
“I’m not fine with that.”
Though he spoke with a smile, his tone carried an unyielding firmness.
Liz felt she had been seeing new sides of Cain lately.
She thought he was docile, but he was such a resolute man. He had hidden his sharpness like a blade concealed within.
Liz felt a chill in her heart.
And her resolve to get rid of this man—or escape if she couldn’t—grew even stronger.
This was separate from the warm sensation she felt from his solid chest or the gentle touch that treated her like a delicate ornament.
* * *
“Thank you.”
Having been set down on her bed from Cain’s arms, Liz glanced at him and expressed her gratitude.
Since learning his true nature, Liz had developed a habit of carefully watching her actions to avoid provoking him.
Cain, observing her, asked,
“Is there anywhere you feel uncomfortable?”
“No…”
But as she spoke, Liz unwittingly grimaced from an unpleasant pain surging in her legs.
She quickly hid it, but Cain had already noticed.
“Excuse me for a moment.”
He asked for permission and suddenly lifted her skirt.
Trending
“What are you doing?”
Liz, flustered, tried to pull her skirt down, but Cain didn’t budge.
After closely examining her legs for a moment, Cain furrowed his brow and said,
“Your legs are this swollen, and you say you’re fine?”
Her legs were swollen?
Liz then looked down at her bare legs, exposed up to her thighs.
Her right knee was visibly swollen, as if filled with fluid.
‘Was it too much after all? Using joints I haven’t used in a while so suddenly?’
“You might need some ice packs.”
Cain said.
“I’m fine. Just call Mirabel.”
“Mirabel is out at the moment.”
“Then another servant…”
“I’ll do it.”
That firm tone again. No matter how many times she heard it, it made her flinch. Liz couldn’t dissuade him further. It seemed best not to provoke him.
“Alright… do it.”
Cain stepped away briefly and returned in less than five minutes.
He held a towel in one hand and an ice pack in the other.
Cain wrapped Liz’s knee with the soft towel and placed the ice pack on top.
Even so, the coldness quickly seeped through the towel into her knee.
As Liz shivered from the cold sensation, Cain brought a thick blanket and draped it over her shoulders.
Such ingrained kindness.
Well, it was none other than herself who had ordered him to act this way. And she had nagged him relentlessly if he was even slightly negligent.
She didn’t need to do that anymore.
No, she wished he wouldn’t.
“Go to Lilia now. A servant should stay by their master’s side.”
Liz spoke calmly, as if admonishing, but inside, she was burning with frustration.
‘Please just leave. I feel like I’m suffocating.’
“I’ll stay a bit longer. Until the swelling goes down.”
Liz was convinced this man was determined to tighten the noose around her neck in this way.
Then, out of the blue, Cain asked,
“May I ask something?”
His low, subtle voice made Liz anxious, and she prayed desperately that it was a question she could answer as she gave permission.
“…Go ahead.”
“Are you going to get married?”
* * *
As soon as she returned from her outing, Mirabel rushed up to the miss’s room.
She had been running an errand for Madame Berium at the apothecary. But as luck would have it, the lip balm Madame favored was sold out.
Knowing she’d be scolded if she returned empty-handed, she urged Jonathan to go to a distant market and back.
Mirabel was restless the entire way back.
‘What if the miss has been looking for me all this time?’
As she bounded up the stairs two steps at a time, she spotted an unwelcome figure coming down and stopped abruptly.
“Cain, why are you here? Weren’t you assigned to serve Miss Lilia now?”
“I had something to discuss with Miss Liz.”
Cain, with his characteristic bright smile, showed respect to his elder and passed by Mirabel, heading downstairs.
Watching his retreating figure, Mirabel felt uneasy.
“What was he talking about? So suddenly?”
Mirabel knew that the miss favored Cain. It was obvious. She made it so clear that anyone with eyes could see. Was Madame blind?
She hoped nothing would happen. The miss had just resolved to get married; that man mustn’t shake her resolve again.
This added another task to Mirabel’s list: serving the miss, helping her not dwell on her scars.

And keeping Cain at bay.
After passing Mirabel and heading downstairs, Cain should have stopped by Lilia’s room to check if she needed anything, but he wasn’t in the mood.
He went straight to his quarters. And locked the door.
It was a room exposed to the merciless late summer sun, with not even a curtain.
He walked to the open window, leaned against the frame, and stared outside without blinking.
The sun, just beginning to set, was slowly sinking toward the treetops, and birds were flying in flocks across the apricot-colored sky.
A cool breeze from the forest gently swayed the willow branches in one corner of the garden. It was a peaceful afternoon moment, with the heat subsiding. But…
Cain’s mind wasn’t focused on any of it.
His eyes were fixed on memories of Liz, and his ears replayed their last conversation.
‘Are you going to get married?’
‘Of course.’
‘Why? So suddenly?’
‘Why? I… I should get married. I’m at that age.’
Marriage… age…
Cain’s lips curled slightly as he mulled over Liz’s words.
She once said age was just a number. That she’d rather stay single forever than live with someone she didn’t want.
Why had the miss, who was so fixated on him, suddenly changed her mind?
At first, he thought it might be a ploy to get his attention.
After all, nothing grabs attention like a sudden change in attitude.
But it didn’t seem like that.
It felt like her heart had truly changed.
Why? What made her cut off a decade of persistent affection so abruptly, without a trace of regret?
As the sun dipped halfway behind the forest, and a faint orange band adorned the western sky’s edge, Cain leaned against the window, lost in thought. But no clear answer came.
The few ideas that surfaced were so absurd they made him chuckle. In the end, he gave up searching for an answer.
Instead, facing the sunset, he gently placed a hand over his left chest.
‘Miss Liz was in a carriage accident.’
The sinking feeling in his heart when he heard that news still lingered there.
That unfamiliar sensation had sparked a strange question that day.
Perhaps Liz Berium wasn’t as insufferable as he had thought.
He wanted to resolve that question, but Liz gave him no chance.
Since regaining consciousness, she had been pushing him away relentlessly. Desperately, even.
But well, let her.
If he didn’t let himself be pushed away, that was that.
He had no intention of letting Liz go until he resolved his question.
Suddenly, his furrowed brow relaxed, and a faint smile spread across his lips.
It was a smile born of the calm certainty of having decided his stance.
Cain turned from the darkening window and walked toward the door.
The setting sun cast his shadow long and vast, cloaking the room in darkness.
