This Beast Never Sleeps at Night (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 5
“Hah!”
Adele jolted awake, eyes snapping open.
Without thinking, she quickly covered her lips with the back of her hand. Then she realized she wasn’t by the lakeside but sitting before a crackling fireplace.
Yet that day’s kiss felt incredibly vivid.
She could clearly sense his breath and the warmth that had settled on her lips, as if it had just happened—and her body felt unbearably hot.
‘Whew… no wonder.’
After all, the fireplace right in front of her seemed ready to burst into roaring crimson flames at any moment.
She must have fallen asleep on the sofa instead of Christine, though she couldn’t recall when. A blanket was even draped over her.
“Christine?”
Adele called out, but received no answer. There was no trace of him anywhere in the small house.
He must have laid her gently on the sofa, covered her with a blanket, and left—after stuffing the fireplace full of firewood.
‘He should’ve woken me up to say goodbye…’
They’d lived ten years without any contact—so why did his silent departure leave her feeling so strangely disappointed?
I really am selfish.
After all, I was the one who abandoned him and left.
Back then, she’d had no choice—but nothing would change now, no matter how much she tried to justify it.
In the end, she had chosen a different path over Christine.
If she could go back to that day again, what choice would she make this time?
Even now, that remained a question with no easy answer.
“He’s already gone?”
Lost in thought, Adele turned at the sound of Tanya’s voice.
Tanya didn’t hide her disappointment as she took off her old coat, heavy with snow.
“Already? But it’s gotten dark.”
“I thought maybe he’d stay and sleep here.”
“Sleep here? What are you talking about!”
When Adele scolded her, jumping up in protest, Tanya just looked baffled.
“It’s snowing terribly outside! On a night like this, with such a blizzard, we should at least offer shelter to any passing traveler!”
Adele forced down her embarrassment and walked over to the window.
“…His carriage is big—he’ll be fine.”
Outside, snow was falling so heavily that everything looked completely white.
He’ll probably leave once the snow lets up a bit. What’s so urgent in this weather…?
“But… is he really Lord Weiss?”
Tanya asked while clearing the table where teacups sat.
“Why?”
“Well… it’s just hard to believe someone so important actually came all the way to our house.”
“If even you know who he is, he really must be famous.”
“Of course! He’s a war hero. Just step outside, and you’ll see boys swinging sticks, imitating the White Ghost!”
“The White Ghost?”
“The knightly order led by Lord Weiss. He’s their captain, isn’t he?”
Now that she thought about it, Adele had heard of the White Ghost before—it was the name of the fiercest knightly order in the Kalime Empire.
And Christine was the one leading it…
“So… does this mean our misfortunes are over and happiness is finally beginning?”
“What are you talking about?”
“If Lord Weiss went so far as to bring you flowers, it clearly means he’s completely smitten with you…”
“That’s not it at all!”
Adele denied it firmly, but Tanya squinted her eyes teasingly.
“Oh, come on! His gaze was so deep and tender—I finally understand what they mean by ‘the look of a man in love’!”
“I said it’s not like that!”
Tanya acted as if she hadn’t heard Adele at all, clasping her hands together and letting her imagination run wild.
“I really hope things work out between you two! Then we’ll be able to burn firewood to our heart’s content this winter! Or wait—since the count is rich, maybe we’ll burn coal instead of firewood. Oh my, the day we get to use a coal-burning stove is finally coming!”

Adele was speechless.
“I could afford a coal stove myself!”
But Tanya sadly gazed at the few remaining logs by the fireplace.
Adele immediately shrank back.
“W-well, of course I’d need to bake and sell more bread and cookies.”
“Do you really think working harder alone will be enough?”
Ever since being cast out from the marquis’s household, Adele had supported herself mainly by selling bread and cookies. But due to rumors about her, nobles refused to buy from her.
Frustrated by Tanya’s brutally rational attitude, Adele snapped.
“So you only want me and the count to work out because of a coal stove?”
“Is that the only reason? I truly want you to be happy—to show those awful people in the Oswald family!”
“I’m happy already. I have you, I have Mia, and I can bake bread and cookies whenever I want. Really.”
Yes, she should be content with that.
Waking up to birdsong in the morning and starting the day with warm soup and soft bread.
Sharing fragrant black tea and desserts while chatting with close friends.
If only this peaceful calm—where no one comes calling and nothing ever happens—could go on forever…
“But Miss, if a good man comes along, I’ll marry him anytime. So please leave me out of your happiness.”
“You heartless dream-killer!”
“See? Flowers are truly the best gift for a lady.”
At Zimmer’s words, Christine turned to look at him, his face deeply scowling as if annoyed by nonsense.
“You’ve never looked this healthy before, Captain. Even on such a cold day, your cheeks are flushed…”
But Zimmer quickly shut his mouth when he met Christine’s sharp glare—a look that clearly warned he might die if he kept talking.
He’d thought Christine had grown a bit more human after opening his heart to a woman.
“Today I’ve certainly learned one lesson: never again will I entrust you with buying gifts.”
“Don’t tell me the flowers didn’t work? That’s unusual. Still, you two seemed to have a good time—so why leave so soon?”
Their carriage pushed through the blizzard. Fierce snowflakes battered the window violently.
They were seasoned by the harshest weather of battlefields—but a journey back after meeting a woman shouldn’t be this grueling…
“It’s mating season, you know.”
Christine said indifferently, quietly gazing out the carriage window.
“Ah… now that you mention it, it is winter.”
Zimmer nodded as if suddenly realizing something.
That must be why his face was so flushed.
“But what’s your relationship with the marchioness? You two seemed like you’ve known each other for a long time.”
At first, Zimmer had assumed Christine had unusual tastes and was bewitched by a strange widow. But the brief glimpse he’d caught of them together carried a strangely nostalgic air.
“A woman who calls herself my older sister.”
“Huh? Older sister?”
It sounded so odd coming from Christine’s mouth.
“And the woman who turned me into a beast.”
“Excuse me?”
“Her scent is truly unbearable—especially on snowy nights like this…”
Christine ran his fingertips over his reddened lips and clicked his tongue.
He hadn’t even hit puberty by age seventeen.
While his peers grew steadily more manly day by day, he still looked like a girl. Even his father had seemed quietly worried about his son.
But everything changed after the day he saved Adele from drowning.
His heart felt ready to burst with the desperate need to rescue her as she sank deep underwater. Then an immense power flooded into his body, violently shaking both his flesh and mind.
Overwhelmed by crushing pressure, his consciousness faded into darkness.
When Adele’s mouth-to-mouth resuscitation brought him back, he felt far stronger and his senses far sharper than before.
It felt as if another being had entered him.
No—more accurately, as if he’d become a different being altogether.
Just seeing her lips made his breath ragged and his control slip.
He was terrified by how instinctive and overwhelming his desire had become.

When he felt her breath settle on his lips, he nearly lost his mind.
So sweet, so soft—he couldn’t stop.
Yet he was also afraid. If he didn’t stop now, he might ruin her.
Barely managing to pull away from the kiss, he fled madly into the snow-covered forest, deeper and deeper.
And there, he realized:
He was no longer an ordinary human.
“I understand. I’ll investigate the marchioness further.”
Zimmer said confidently, as if urging Christine to trust him alone. There clearly seemed to be more history between them than he’d assumed.
But Christine shook his head.
“No. Forget it.”
“What? But if the lady is suffering under false accusations…”
“If she wants to clear her name, she’ll ask for help herself. If she doesn’t, it means she isn’t wronged.”
Zimmer was utterly dumbfounded by this unexpectedly cold response.
“That can’t be right. Even you found it strange, didn’t you? The Oswald family kept the marchioness—who allegedly poisoned the head of the house—right where she was. What if someone you cared about was falsely accused like that…?”
“Someone I care about?”
A bitter smirk curled Christine’s lips.
“Then… you don’t?”
Zimmer wondered if he’d misunderstood something.
“Not every woman I want to hold is someone I care about.”
“Excuse me?”
“I’m not generous enough to love a traitor.”
Christine’s voice was firmer and colder than ever.
The snow that had fallen for days finally stopped. Morning sunlight shone brightly, as if there’d never been a blizzard.
“Adele! Adele!”
Just as Adele finished eating with Tanya, Mia burst into her house. Her face clearly said she’d nearly died of boredom after being cooped up indoors for days.
True to form, the moment she took off her coat, she launched into breathless chatter.
“Adele, was that really Lord Weiss who came the other day? What did you two talk about? When’s he coming again? He brought flowers—did he propose or something?”
Most of her questions started with “Lord Weiss” and ended with “Christine.”
But Adele, who’d been listening quietly, startled Mia with an unexpected request.
“Mia… can I ask you a favor?”
“What favor? Just say it—I’ll do anything!”
Adele hesitated slightly before speaking to the eagerly approaching Mia.
“Your brother… Mark. He’s not seeing anyone, right?”
Mia’s brother Mark worked as a veterinarian nearby. Though he mostly treated livestock, he also helped people who couldn’t afford a doctor.
He was a kind, diligent man with a gentle face, raising his young son alone.
He’d also met Adele a few times before.
“Well, that’s true—but why bring up Mark now?”
Forcing a smile, Adele carefully made her request.
“If he’s willing… would it be alright to seriously consider meeting him?”
“Adele, what on earth are you saying?”
Mia looked as if Adele were speaking a foreign language.
Expecting this reaction, Adele broke into a nervous sweat and shrank back.
“I knew it… it’s too much to ask. Someone like me probably…”
“What are you talking about! Mark’s liked you for ages—you always hated men so much he never dared say anything! But what about the count?”
Mia seemed to take it for granted that Adele and Christine were dating.
Adele decided she needed to clear up this misunderstanding.
“The count is actually…”
Just then—
“Miss! We have a visitor! A guest!”
Tanya rushed in, startled.

This situation felt oddly like a repeat of a few days ago.
“Don’t tell me Lord Weiss is here again?”
Mia hurried to the window just as she had before—and soon muttered in disbelief.
“This is even more surprising than if the count had come.”
Wondering what she meant, Adele also looked out the window.
