This Beast Never Sleeps at Night (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 4
“Why, because you’re the woman who poisoned her husband?”
Adele turned around in surprise.
It was a rumor already known by everyone in the kingdom. But she had hoped Christine wouldn’t know. She wanted to remain, in his eyes, the girl from that old memory.
Then again, that was probably asking too much.
“I don’t care. Whether you truly poisoned your husband or were falsely accused.”
Christine spoke with an indifferent expression.
“Chris…”
“It just means your reputation can’t possibly affect mine.”
At that moment, she had no idea how arrogant Christine’s gaze was.
As if he’d been born a noble of high birth—someone so exalted that a woman like her could never dare approach him.
Christine, the miner’s son.
A wretched boy who wandered the whole village with a hungry face, having no mother to care for him.
That memory now seemed as if it were merely Adele’s own delusion.
“But you… how did you become a noble?”
Adele asked cautiously.
“Because I brought honor to the Emperor.”
He answered haughtily, emptied his teacup in one gulp, and changed the subject.
“Is this really all the hospitality you’re offering a guest?”
“Huh?”
“You can’t seriously expect me to leave after drinking only this bitter, astringent water?”
“That’s expensive black tea…”
“We haven’t seen each other in ten years, and you won’t even offer me a proper meal?”
“Who just shows up unannounced? I don’t even have anything suitable to eat right now…”
“I’ll eat anything, so don’t worry. I haven’t had a proper meal and I’m about to starve to death.”
“What kept you from eating?”
At his words of hunger, Adele immediately looked worried.
She had always been like that—ever since long ago, the only one who ever worried about him when he was hungry.
Because of that, Christine had once thought he’d gladly give up everything for her. He really had.
“I was stuck listening to the Emperor’s endless chatter. It was a kind of torture disguised as a dinner invitation.”
Christine shook his head with a horrified expression.
“Then wait just a moment. I’ll see if there’s anything to eat.”
“Thank you, Adele. You’re the only one I’ve got.”
As he gave a faint smile, silver eyelashes shimmered above his gray eyes tinged with blue.
Adele had always been weak against his smile—it was the kind of look that made her want to help him as if under a spell.
Perhaps Christine knew this well too, which was why he used it so effectively.
But before going into the kitchen, Adele decided to make one thing absolutely clear.
“Just so we’re clear on this! That thing the other day wasn’t a kiss. And I absolutely did not make the first move!”
With that, she quickly slipped into the kitchen and shut the door before Christine could say a word in reply.
Slam!
She was more resentful than he’d expected.
After closing the door, Adele sank onto a chair by the dining table.
“Haa…”
She let out a deep breath she’d been holding all this time.
‘What on earth is this, Chris…?’
She was utterly confused.
‘I was trying to forget everything and move on.’
Her life in the mining village, leaving him behind, even her memories of her mother…
She’d tried to bury them all as if they belonged to a distant, past life. She’d wanted to remember everything as beautiful, happy, and lovely…
After all, no one had ever been able to point out the distortions in her memories—until now.
And then he suddenly appeared.
Trending
Not as the pretty boy from her memories, but as a dangerous man.
Every time she sensed his gaze, his breathing, his scent, Adele’s heart pounded violently. Just being near him made it hard to breathe.
Earlier, when their lips nearly touched, her heart felt ready to burst out of her chest. Even afterward, she’d been terrified someone might hear it racing.
“I’m going crazy…!”
Adele shook her head, denying her feelings.
It’s just that we haven’t seen each other in so long—I’m happy and awkward, that’s all. Of course anyone would feel flustered if someone got that close to their lips.
‘Yes, that’s all it is. How could I possibly… shamelessly… how could I…’
“It’s warm.”
Christine murmured to himself as he looked around the empty living room.
Before him, the fireplace blazed fiercely, spewing out crimson flames. But that wasn’t the only reason it felt warm.
The house was shabby, old, and cramped beyond measure.
Yet, for some reason, it felt familiar to him.
Long, narrow windows were draped with linen curtains embroidered with delicate patterns, and the console table was covered with handmade lace.
Above the fireplace sat candles and small picture frames arranged prettily, and despite winter, green plants grew fresh and lively in every corner. Odd as it was, even the flowers he’d brought seemed to fit in nicely.
It felt just like the house she’d lived in long ago.
The place where the comforting, sweet scent of bread and cookies always lingered in the air.
Where Adele and her mother had always welcomed him warmly whenever he came by, clutching his empty stomach.
It felt as if, after ten long years, he’d finally returned to that very house.
He almost expected Adele’s mother, wearing an apron, to appear at any moment carrying a steaming-hot pie. Back then, Adele would sternly warn him not to even glance at the pie until he’d finished all his writing practice.
And just then, Christine’s father would arrive to pick him up, pretending to take his side by teasing that since he took after his father, his head wasn’t very sharp, so Adele should teach him gently.
Damn it…!
He’d thought they could live together like a real family.
But that happiness had been far too brief.
Yet, it seemed he’d longed for the house where Adele lived all this time.
Even though it was now nothing but a meaningless past.
“The portrait of the late Duchess of Oswald.”
It was right before the year-end banquet.
The Emperor, who had summoned him, handed Christine a small portrait.
A woman with long black hair pinned up and green eyes.
Though simply dressed, the woman in the portrait was strikingly beautiful and elegant. But Christine stared at it, spellbound, for another reason entirely.
“Is this woman truly the widow of the late Duke?”
“Yes. Do you happen to know her?”
Until recently, Christine had been living on the battlefield. He held a noble title but had neither friendships with other nobles nor any interest in their world.
Perhaps he’d deliberately kept it that way to sever his feelings for Adele.
“Not particularly well. She was the daughter of someone who looked after me when I was young.”
“Excellent. Then attend the banquet and try to rekindle your acquaintance.”
“What’s the reason?”
“She might have the late Duke’s documents.”
“The Duke’s documents?”
“Just blank papers bearing my signature. They vanished after the Duke’s death, and no matter how hard I search, I can’t find them.”
Christine didn’t believe the Emperor.
Eight years had passed since Duke Oswald’s death. And the Emperor was still searching for mere blank papers?
They must be extremely important to him.
“I’ll approach her and see what I can find out.”
As he bowed to leave, the Emperor added meaningfully,
“It’s fine to be friendly, but don’t do anything that would upset April.”
“…”
“Oh, was my request too demanding?”
“It depends on how you look at it.”
The Emperor laughed heartily, then suddenly lowered his voice with seriousness.

“You’re practically family to me already. Understand?”
The Emperor had long hinted at wanting Christine as his son-in-law. He wanted to secure Christine as his own by using April as bait.
Though, to Christine, it wasn’t a very tempting lure.
“Your Majesty is my liege.”
Each time, he’d slip away with an ambiguous reply like this.
Adele came out of the kitchen wearing an apron.
“Dinner’s ready, Chris.”
But he gave no reply.
“Chris…”
Adele paused mid-step and let out a quiet sigh.
He was asleep.
Leaning back diagonally against the sofa with his arms crossed, his long legs propped up on the table, sleeping as comfortably as if he were in his own home.
Adele sank down quietly beneath the sofa where he slept and watched him silently.
‘He looks just the same when he’s asleep.’
He’d grown much taller since then, his build had become solid, and even his voice had changed—but his sleeping face still held the innocence of that boy from long ago.
A boy whose voice hadn’t even broken by the age of seventeen.
Most boys his age had already grown nearly as tall as adults, yet Christine had been almost the same height as Adele, who was a year older.
But no one dared tease him.
Though Christine was prettier than any girl, no one could ever beat him in a fight.
He moved swiftly, and despite his slender frame, he was strong. Watching him fight sometimes made him seem like a fierce beast.
And in the end, he’d become a hero of the battlefield.
And now he’d transformed into this impressive man.
Not a boy anymore—a man…
As Adele gazed at his sleeping form, she felt an odd sensation welling up inside her and quickly turned her head away.
She added more firewood to the flickering hearth. Tanya would surely return and frown in dismay over the shortage of firewood—they were so frugal with it that they didn’t even use the second floor during winter.
But for now, even if it meant being a bit colder herself, she wanted him to sleep somewhere warm.
Crackle. Crackle…
The sound of the fire burning filled the room with peaceful quiet.
Outside, the snowflakes grew heavier, and the sky darkened.
That day, it had snowed heavily.
Christine, now seventeen, had recently started working in the mines.
Adele was in a hurry to bring him lunch. She’d been helping at her mother’s bakery, which had been swamped with orders, and ended up running very late.
So she decided to cut across Garden Lake. It was late winter, and though the ice had begun to melt, the thick snow cover hid the danger from view.
She’d reached about the middle of the lake when, as she stepped forward, the ice beneath her feet shattered like a biscuit, and her body plunged straight through. The midwinter lake sucked her in like a swamp.
“Adele!”
Christine, who had come out to meet her, saw what happened and jumped into the water.
That was the last thing she remembered seeing.
When she regained consciousness, she was on dry land. Beside her lay Christine, soaked through, pale and ashen like a corpse.
And he wasn’t breathing.
“Chris! Chris! Open your eyes!”
Panicked, Adele shook him frantically. When he still didn’t wake, she desperately performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
Fortunately, he finally started breathing again.
At that moment, Adele burst into tears. She sank to the ground like a child and sobbed loudly.
“Waaaaah!”
“Why are you crying?”
Christine looked at her, bewildered. She was always the one acting like the older sister, handling everything with such maturity.
“Waaah! Waaah! I thought you were really going to die! Wah!”
“I’m fine. See? I’m perfectly okay…”
“Are you really okay?”
Adele, shoulders shaking with sobs, had a red nose smeared with a messy mix of tears and snot.

Finding her amusing, Christine’s eyes crinkled slightly as he reached out to wipe her face.
“Yeah, I’m fine.”
“How can you be fine? Your lips are turning blue.”
“Adele, yours are even bluer.”
“Ugh… I think I’m going to freeze to death.”
Adele shivered violently and hugged herself tightly.
“Me too.”
Christine pulled her into an embrace. Whether from the cold or from relief, Adele hugged him back just as tightly.
Both of them were frozen stiff and trembling, yet the warmth of their bodies touching felt unbearably hot.
It felt as if deep, buried emotions were slowly melting away.
That sensation clouded her mind like floating debris.
She couldn’t think straight at all.
And then, so naturally…
They pressed their lips together, licking each other’s frozen skin.
An awkward kiss, made more passionate by its clumsiness; a pure kiss, made more instinctive by its innocence.
Yes, it was definitely a kiss.
