This Beast Never Sleeps at Night (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 3
“Why did you just disappear that day?”
That day, after dancing together, Adele fled the banquet hall as if running away.
She hadn’t noticed while dancing, but when she came to her senses, everyone was whispering as they stared at her and Christine.
At that moment, Adele couldn’t lift her face from sheer shame.
It felt as though he’d seen right through her fluttering heart.
“The villainess who married an old marquis for his money and status, then poisoned her husband—how dare she!”
It was as if she could hear those words ringing in her ears.
“I’d only planned to deliver the gift to His Majesty and leave right away. Since it was your first time attending the banquet, I thought you’d be busy greeting people, so I left without saying anything. If you felt hurt, I’m sorry.”
“Ha, sorry?”
Christine was smiling, but his eyes were icy cold.
Right after their dance ended, people swarmed around him, talking nonstop, leaving him completely overwhelmed. In that chaos, Adele had vanished without a trace.
When he heard she’d gone home, inexplicable anger surged inside him, impossible to contain.
Right—running away on a whim was always your specialty.
“Is there nothing else you want to say to me besides that?”
Christine asked.
Adele stared at him blankly.
There was so much she wanted to say—so many things she desperately wished to pour out in a rush.
But what would it change?
He was soon to become the Emperor’s son-in-law. Getting entangled with someone like her would bring him nothing good.
“How’s Uncle doing? His leg… from back then…?”
Christine looked at Adele with somber eyes, then nodded.
“He’s doing well.”
“I’m glad.”
Until ten years ago, Adele and her mother had cared for Christine like family. His father, who frequently visited their home searching for his lost son, naturally grew close to them as well.
Eventually, their parents officially announced their remarriage.
But Adele’s mother died the day before the wedding.
A horrific accident—attacked by a wild beast in the forest.
Christine’s father, who went to hunt down the creature, suffered such a severe leg injury his life was in danger. And right after that, Adele left them behind to go live with her noble birth father.
She’d coldly pushed past him as he tearfully blocked her path.
She claimed there was no reason left to stay in that grimy mining village without her mother. She declared she’d become a noble and live in luxury from then on.
Unfortunately, it didn’t seem things had turned out as she’d hoped.
“How have you been all this time?”
“I’ve been fine too.”
She smiled, but her green eyes were dark and gloomy like a deep well—nothing like the bright, affectionate eyes he remembered.
“Right, you look like you’ve been *reaaally* fine. You always wanted to become a noble so badly, after all.”
Christine sneered, recalling the report from his aide Zimmer.
“They say there was endless gossip from the moment you married the late Oswald Marquis—an eighteen-year-old girl wedding a man old enough to be her father.”
After returning from the banquet, Christine had immediately ordered an investigation into Adele.
“An eighteen-year-old marrying a man old enough to be her father?”
“Yes, many claimed it was a marriage solely for wealth and social advancement.”
“But she didn’t seem to possess either.”
At the banquet, Adele’s attire was plainly shabby to anyone’s eyes—not a single piece of jewelry adorned her.
Still, she’d been beautiful enough, yet her difficult circumstances were obvious at a glance.
“Well… she was banished two years into the marriage, accused of poisoning her husband.”
Christine clicked his tongue.
He couldn’t believe it—of all people, *she* killing her husband?
Back in the mining village, where playthings were scarce, children often caught insects to amuse themselves. Adele would always set the insects free, earning herself scoldings.
Whenever that happened, Christine would recklessly charge at those children—because he couldn’t forgive anyone who insulted Adele.
Now, however, Adele was branded the Empire’s greatest villainess, receiving every possible insult.
Of course, the present-day Christine had no intention of recklessly charging to her defense.
Trending
The Adele he’d known ten years ago no longer existed.
“Tell me more details.”
“Well, since there was no concrete evidence, House Oswald settled for banishing her. She apparently lives now in a small manor on the outskirts of Greenhill.”
“So what’s your opinion, aide?”
“Sir?”
Zimmer looked puzzled.
“No evidence, so they just let their lord’s murderer go? And from a house as prominent as Oswald’s?”
Though he didn’t trust Adele, the situation still seemed suspicious.
“There’s… also a rumor about some kind of relationship with the marquis’s son…”
Zimmer quickly changed his tone upon seeing Christine’s icy expression.
“I’ll gather more details and report back.”
Christine rose from his chair.
“That’s enough. Prepare the carriage—I’m heading to the outskirts of Greenhill now.”
“You can’t possibly mean to visit the marchioness?”
“What’s the problem?”
Zimmer looked utterly bewildered.
This wasn’t just anyone—it was Viscount Weiss, known as the Ice Demon.
A man who’d never once glanced at even the most stunning, well-connected women who’d thrown themselves at him; a battle-mad warrior obsessed solely with combat.
The fact he’d even asked the marchioness to dance was shocking enough. But now he was investigating her and planning to visit personally…?
To anyone watching, this was clearly a heart signal!
‘Still, of all people, a widow with such a dubious reputation…’
Zimmer personally disapproved, but decided to support his respected lord’s feelings.
After all, it was a good sign that his lord had finally found someone to care about.
“Since it’s your first visit… shouldn’t you bring a gift?”
Christine, who’d been about to step out the door, paused briefly.
Then he answered curtly, “Whatever you like.”
“Yes, leave it to me!”
Apparently, the “gift” Zimmer prepared involved emptying an entire flower shop.
“There are so many flowers!”
Adele exclaimed, pulling out every vase in the house to arrange the enormous bouquets.
Her home was a worn, small two-story manor.
A curtain hung over the staircase entrance, suggesting the second floor wasn’t in use. On the first floor, an armchair and a rose-colored sofa sat around the fireplace. Beside it, a narrow hallway led to rooms, with a kitchen-dining area just inside the hallway entrance.
Though shabby, the interior was so tiny and plain its layout was instantly clear.
“Alright, this should do.”
Adele placed the flower vases around the room.
Christine, who’d been watching with arms crossed, finally spoke up.
“It’s a mess. You’d be better off throwing them all out.”
With the small house now bursting with colorful, flamboyant floral decorations, it looked exactly like a gypsy den.
“You’re right—it is a bit chaotic.”
When Christine frowned, Adele stuck out her tongue.
“Sorry. You know I’m terrible at saying things I don’t mean. Flowers must be especially expensive in winter—I’ve just wasted your money.”
“Noted. Next time I come, I’ll bring only what you actually need. Seems like you’re missing quite a few things.”
Christine clicked his tongue disdainfully as he surveyed her shabby home.
Calling this a manor was generous—it was barely better than a commoner’s house.
But Adele paid no mind to his condescending attitude.
“Next time?”
She seemed even more flustered by those words.
“What, are you saying never to come again?”
“That’s not it. But people will talk, and this is such a small town…”
Christine furrowed his brow irritably.

“What’s the issue?”
“Huh?”
“Aren’t you a widow now? Is it really scandalous for a widow to meet a man?”
Adele shot back sharply.
“What are you talking about? You’re not ‘a man’ to me—you’re just like a little brother…”
“Then there’s even less reason for it to be a problem, right?”
Suddenly, Christine leaned his face close to hers.
“…!”
Startled, Adele stumbled backward, tripping over the sofa. He quickly caught her by the shoulders.
“Why so jumpy?”
“W-well, you suddenly came closer!”
“So you had some strange thoughts?”
“Strange thoughts?”
Adele stared at him incredulously.
But in truth, her heartbeat kept accelerating.
‘You’re too close!’
Amidst the overwhelming floral scent filling the tiny house, she caught his personal scent—
cool like a shadowed forest, mysterious…
somehow bewitching.
It was the same scent that had clung to her since the banquet, invading her bedroom that night and keeping her awake—the unfamiliar yet intoxicating scent of a man.
Just being near him made Adele feel breathless. Not wanting him to notice, she quickly turned her head away.
But Christine grasped her chin, forcing her to look at him.
“Don’t look away. It’s been so long—we shouldn’t part feeling disappointed.”
He stared at her intently, as if ready to devour her whole. Her reflection shimmered in his mysterious steel-gray eyes.
Adele felt as if she might be trapped there forever.
Finally, she reached up and placed her hands on his face—
Squish!
She firmly pinched both his cheeks, then even shook them.
“Stop fooling around, Chris.”
She quickly let go when he glared fiercely, but stated firmly,
“You’re practically my own little brother. Sure, you’ve grown much more handsome and manly than before—but in my eyes, you’re still that little kid who used to follow me around like a puppy.”
Apparently, when faced with something utterly unexpected, the brain just shuts down.
Christine stared at her with his mouth slightly open for a long moment.
A puppy? A little kid? Following her around?
Could all those words possibly be referring to *him*?
But Adele seemed oblivious to Christine’s darkening mood.
“I remember it vividly—how beautifully you smiled, how much you loved sweet cookies and bread, and how you’d go crazy for apple pie, you little…”
“Enough.”
In an instant, he leaned even closer. His lips—the very ones that drove imperial ladies wild—seemed about to touch Adele’s.
“C-Chris…!”
Adele’s eyes widened in shock.
“Then you must remember this too—just who gave you your first kiss.”
His breath brushed against her lips—and then they touched…
“Mmf!”
Adele immediately shoved him away with all her strength.
“What are you doing!”
“You forgot? *You* were the one who kissed *me* first, you know—the one who treats me like a little brother.”
Adele cried out in surprise.
“What are you talking about? I didn’t kiss you first!”
“So you admit we kissed, then?”

“No! That wasn’t a kiss! How could that possibly be a kiss!”
She kept stammering excuses.
“You’d drowned and stopped breathing—I panicked and gave you mouth-to-mouth!”
“There must’ve been more to it than that?”
“When you finally started breathing again, I was just so relieved… Yes! So relieved I kissed you! It absolutely wasn’t a real kiss! We were both out of our minds—that’s why it happened…”
“Then why is your face so red?”
As Adele rambled defensively, she shot him a fierce glare.
“My face isn’t red!”
“You’re redder than a ripe tomato. Got a mirror?”
“Forget it! Your eyes are just broken.”
“My eyes are perfectly fine. My vision’s excellent.”
“If I say it’s not red, then it’s not!”
“Damn it, you stubborn liar!”
A brief silence fell between them.
Then, softly, a laugh escaped Adele’s lips.
Christine glared at her as if asking what was so funny, but her expression grew wistful.
“It’s been so long since I heard that phrase.”
“What phrase?”
Christine asked, looking exactly like a sulky boy—the same familiar face Adele had known since childhood.
Only then did Adele feel a sense of reassurance.
This handsome man truly was the boy she’d always known.
“You always used to say that to me—‘stubborn liar.’ Your expression hasn’t changed a bit since then.”
She remembered so much about him.
She’d thought she’d forgotten it all.
After abandoning them, claiming she’d live well on her own…
“You haven’t changed either—still as stubborn as ever, just like back then.”
Even as he said this, his expression softened as he sank onto the sofa.
Adele added fresh logs to the dying fireplace.
“I’m truly happy we met again, Chris. But please don’t come here anymore. Nothing good will come of you getting involved with me.”
Crackle. Crackle.
The flames roared to life, devouring the new logs.
Yes, this was the end.
Bitterly, Adele silently bid him farewell in her heart.
“What, because you’re the woman who poisoned her husband?”
Adele whirled around in shock.
