This Beast Never Sleeps at Night (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 12
Could a wild beast be stuck in the gap of the wall?
I really hope that’s the case.
Please, don’t let it be a person.
If it were someone who didn’t care about the sound of bells, who knew what harm they might do? She knew all too well that people were the scariest thing in the world.
Jingle jingle, jingle jingle…!
All this while, the bell kept ringing incessantly.
If only Tanya were here with her right now, she’d feel a little less afraid.
Could it be that the sound doesn’t carry as far as Mia’s house?
What should I do? Should I go out and check?
It probably wasn’t a wild animal. After all, the bells were ringing from more than one spot.
It seemed like several people had gathered around the house, clearly shaking the wall violently on purpose to intimidate her.
‘Who on earth could it be?’
Just then—
The ringing of the bell seemed to stop,
CRASH!
“Kyaaah!”
Adele screamed at the sound of shattering glass.
Soon, heavy footsteps grew steadily closer. It sounded as if the people who’d been shaking the wall were now leaping into the garden.
CLANG!
Adele quickly bolted the storeroom door from the inside and crouched down on the stairs. She even blew out the lamp so no light would leak out.
‘Please! Let nothing happen!’
In the pitch-black darkness where she couldn’t see a thing, Adele covered her ears and curled herself into a tight ball.
The stench of mildew stung her nose, making her feel sick.
And then, an unwanted memory surfaced.
“Lord Oswald is a man of frugality through and through. Therefore, my lady, I ask that you abide by his instructions.”
From the very first day she entered the marquis’s household, the head maid had spoken as if trying to establish discipline—treating her not as the marchioness but as a newly hired servant.
“My lady, from now on you’ll use this cellar. Since it’s underground and no wind gets in, there’s no need for separate heating. If you’re cold, just wear warmer clothes to sleep. You’ll be given one candle per week, so please use it sparingly. As for meals, you may eat whatever Lord Oswald leaves behind.”
For the two years she’d lived in the Oswald household, Adele had been a marchioness in name only.
Even the maids openly mocked and mistreated her, calling her “Madam Cellar.”
Adele only received the treatment due to a marchioness when guests came or when she had to attend banquets. That was the only reason they needed a marchioness at all.
A powerless puppet of a marchioness with nowhere to turn for help.
“…Are you listening, Captain?”
Zimmer spoke from beside him, but Christine gave no reply. He simply stood with his arms crossed, staring out the carriage window.
Outside was pitch black, so he clearly wasn’t admiring the view—and judging by his expression, he was in an exceptionally foul mood.
‘Did he have a fight with the marchioness or something?’
Then Zimmer was startled.
Christine, of all people, being this moody because of someone—especially a woman…?
Wasn’t he the sort who didn’t care even about the imperial princess?
This clearly showed that Adele was special to him—more than just a sister.
“How close must they be if he kissed her on the cheek?”
An unexpected question.
Zimmer, who had been tilting his head in confusion, suddenly burst into a wide grin.
“You didn’t actually kiss the marchioness on the cheek, did you? Then this is definitely a heart signal…!”
But seeing Christine’s icy glare, he quickly changed his words.
“Well… does it really matter whose cheek was kissed by whom? Either way, it’s clearly a heart signal. When a man and woman touch skin, that’s all that needs to be said… y’know…”
Christine’s eyes alone looked murderous enough to kill Zimmer on the spot.
“Shall I get rid of you?”
“Huh?”
Startled by Christine’s menacing aura, Zimmer shrank back. But Christine’s gaze wasn’t even directed at him.
Then who was it aimed at?
Trending
Christine shook his head as if trying to shake off his thoughts.
“Never mind. What’s the report on Earl Eton?”
He’d ordered an investigation into Earl Eton after Lady Hans’s party ended.
“As a matter of fact, the report just came in.”
Zimmer quickly handed over the documents and added,
“He’s been frequenting the Hell Valley tavern lately. Seems like he’s plotting something with those back-alley thugs…”
Suddenly, Christine raised a finger to his lips, signaling silence.
When Zimmer stopped speaking, Christine closed his eyes and sharpened all his senses. It felt as if the air inside the carriage swirled around him all at once.
After a brief moment, his steel-gray eyes flashed as he murmured quietly,
“It seems he’s already set his plan in motion.”
BANG BANG BANG!
With a violent crash, the cellar door shook violently.
“My lady! Stop hiding like a rat and come out already!”
Adele jumped at the voice from beyond the door.
Earl Eton!
Though slurred with drink, it was unmistakably him.
“If you don’t open the door by the time I count to three, my foul-tempered friends here will break it down and come in! And who knows what we’ll do then! Kha ha ha ha!”
Immediately, the snickering laughter of several men followed. There seemed to be at least four or five of them.
“One!”
Adele shouted, clutching her apron tightly with trembling hands.
“Wasn’t your humiliation at Lady Hans’s party enough, Earl Eton?”
“Shut up!”
BOOM!
The door shook violently—probably kicked by his foot.
“Break it down!”
BANG! CRASH!
Each deafening blow made Adele flinch uncontrollably. The old wooden door looked as if it would splinter apart at any moment.
But she steeled herself, tightened her core, and shouted with all her might,
“I’m warning you—if any of you lays a finger on me, do you really think Viscount Weiss will stand by and do nothing?”
Sorry, but right now she had no choice but to borrow Christine’s fearsome reputation.
Sure enough, she sensed the men hesitating. After all, in Kalime, his name alone could silence a crying child.
“Hey, no one said anything about Viscount Weiss!”
“What’s her connection with him?”
A hushed whisper—clearly causing some unrest among them.
Seizing the moment, Adele summoned a bit more courage.
“He’ll be here any minute! So if you value your lives, get out now!”
“Shut up!”
CRACKLE!
Finally, the door shattered, and through the cloud of white dust, she saw their figures. Right in the middle, Eton grinned, baring his white teeth.
“Heh heh heh… Who’d fall for your lies? You humiliated me in front of the imperial princess herself! Today, you’ll pay dearly for that!”
Eton gave a signal to his gang.
One of the men began splashing a liquid from a wooden bucket all around. The pungent smell of oil filled the air.
Could they really be planning to set the house on fire?
“No!”
As Adele tried to stop them, the others rushed toward her.
In that instant, Adele lifted her skirt, revealing her pale thigh.
“No! Watch out for the kni—!”
Eton shouted, but their eyes were already fixed on her thigh,
SHINK!
Adele drew the dagger hidden in her garter and swung it.

“Kraah! That wench!”
The man whose arm Adele had slashed grimaced and yelled,
“Back off if you don’t want to die!”
Adele held her dagger up fiercely.
She knew she couldn’t possibly fight them off with just this—but they hesitated to charge recklessly.
‘Please, if only I can stab one of them and escape…’
Just as she desperately gripped the dagger with sweaty palms,
“How disappointing. I came all this way to help.”
A languid voice, utterly out of place in the tense situation, rang out.
Everyone turned to see a man sitting on a red sofa, propping his chin as if watching a show.
No one knew when he’d arrived.
His ghost-like appearance was startling enough—but even more astonishing was his unreal beauty.
Flawless features as if carved from marble, dazzling silver-blond hair, and blood-red lips that seemed capable of enchanting anyone.
“V, Viscount Weiss?”
At Eton’s shout, the thugs around him panicked.
“Damn it, he’s really here?”
“This madman!”
Christine slowly rose from the sofa and approached.
“I believe I made a request that day, Earl Eton.”
“Th, that day…?”
Puzzled at first, Eton suddenly recognized the voice.
Lady Hans’s party!
That day, he’d dragged a drugged Adele into a room. Just as he did, Adele—who had been unconscious and limp—suddenly drew a dagger just like now and swung it.
Stunned by the unexpected resistance, someone had come up behind him and whispered in a sweet, gentle voice,
“Please refrain from dangerous actions.”
The moment those words ended, he felt a sharp pain at his neck and lost consciousness.
When he woke up, his mouth was gagged, he was stripped naked, and tied to a chair.
So that man had been Viscount Weiss?
“It seems my warning that day was far too polite.”
“I… I just wanted to scare her a little…”
Though terrified as he answered, Eton felt a flicker of doubt. Viscount Weiss before him looked slender and delicate—almost girlish—nothing like the terrifying figure of legend.
The rumors must’ve been exaggerated.
Maybe with the men here, they could still handle him…
SHING!
In an instant, Christine’s rapier flashed before his eyes.
The long, slender blade seemed to mirror its owner perfectly.
Just by looking at it, Eton suddenly felt breathless and chilled to the bone—likely from the ominous killing intent radiating from the blade.
He instinctively stumbled backward…
SPLAT!
He slipped on the oil-soaked floor and fell flat on his back.
At the same moment, Christine’s rapier pressed against the underside of his jaw.
“Gyaaaah!”
Thinking his jaw was about to be pierced, Eton screamed in terror.
Meanwhile, Christine’s rapier slid indifferently from under his jaw, down his throat, across his chest, over his stomach, and finally to the center of his legs.
Just the shadow of the blade made Eton feel as if his belly had been ripped open and his guts torn out—he couldn’t even breathe from sheer terror.
“Guh! Gack… s-save… please save me… I beg you… huuuh…!”
He trembled violently, wetting himself on the floor. His face was soaked with a messy mix of tears, snot, and drool.
Christine gave his rapier a swift twirl and sheathed it.
“I’ve seen enough blood on the battlefield.”
Then, as if nothing had happened, he gave a faint, playful smile—immediately transforming his face into that of a mischievous boy.

Seizing the chance, the remaining thugs began fleeing like madmen. Eton tried to scramble away on his backside, but when his eyes met Christine’s, he sank back down again.
“So… you’ll… spare me… then…? I understand… may I… go…?”
Christine nodded.
“But only after you receive the marchioness’s permission.”
As he spoke, he rested his hand on the hilt of his rapier, ready to draw it at any moment.
Eton immediately kowtowed to Adele, banging his forehead on the floor.
“I’ve committed an unforgivable crime, my lady! Please, forgive me! I was drunk and acted in anger! I beg you! Show mercy to this worthless wretch! Please!”
He looked ready to lick the soles of Adele’s feet.
Adele felt hollow—ashamed that she’d been afraid of such a man.
“Don’t ever show your face before me again!”
“Yes, yes! Of course not!”
He fled, urine dripping from his lower half.
“Aren’t you letting him off too easily? How boring.”
Christine clicked his tongue in disapproval.
CLANG!
Adele dropped the dagger she’d been holding and sank to the floor.
Just moments ago, she’d been swinging her blade fiercely—but now she trembled like a pitiful, frightened animal.
“Are you alright?”
“Mm… thank you… Chris…”
Despite still shaking, she forced a smile and offered a polite gesture.
“You’ll need to clean up, so it’s probably best to sleep elsewhere tonight.”
He glanced around the house as he spoke.
The floor was soaked in oil, and broken pieces of the storeroom door were scattered everywhere.
“It’s fine. This much is…”
“Hmph. I suppose you’ve grown used to it, since it happens so often?”
Christine’s mocking words slipped out. He knew it wasn’t her fault things had turned out this way—yet he was irritated by her constant pretense of being fine.
How pathetic.
She’d left, claiming she’d live well on her own—only to end up not just mocked by everyone, but in this sorry state.
“Then it seems my help isn’t needed. I’ll take my leave.”
Christine turned firmly to leave—but paused.
Looking down, he saw Adele, still crouched on the floor, tightly clutching the hem of his coat.
“Just a little… can’t you stay with me a bit longer? I know I look pathetic, but just for a moment… okay?”
She looked up at him with pleading eyes.
Her gaze was so pitiful that Christine quickly looked away.
“Just a little while.”

Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away
This is also on my reread list!
This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.
Definitely worth a read, y’all!

The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.
But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.
Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.
I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.
The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.
As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
