This Beast Never Sleeps at Night (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 15
The next day.
Adele was just about to start breakfast when Tanya burst in, breathless and flustered.
“I’m so sorry, miss! I had a drink at Mrs. Bonita’s last night and accidentally fell asleep….”
Then she noticed how drastically the house had changed from the previous day and looked bewildered.
“But what on earth happened overnight?”
The living room reeked of oil, and the door to the basement pantry had vanished without a trace. It wasn’t just the interior that had changed—the entire outer fence had been ripped away.
“A lot of uninvited guests paid us a visit.”
Fortunately, Adele remained as calm as ever. She calmly ate her steaming mushroom soup and baked potatoes and sipped her tea as if nothing had happened.
“…Guests?”
“Never mind that—just hurry up and eat. I’ve got a lot to do today.”
“Yes! Just tell me what to do! As punishment for staying out all night, I’ll even build a new pantry door!”
“Forget the pantry door. Just clean the second floor.”
“What? The second floor?”
Tanya’s eyes widened in surprise.
They always blocked off the stairs to the second floor once the weather turned cold to save on heating costs. Winter wouldn’t be over for several more months—why clean the second floor now?
“A guest will be using it.”
Just then—
A familiar carriage appeared outside the window.
“Could it possibly be that guest…?”
The carriage entering the garden bore the wolf crest of the House of Weiss, the mark of a count.
And that wasn’t all. Behind the carriage, a line of carts loaded with luggage and people followed one after another.
“They can’t all be guests, can they?”
Tanya muttered with a pained expression.
“What’s going on?”
An old mansion stood alone on the outskirts of the village.
Rumors claimed a villainess who had poisoned her husband lived there, so few ever came near the place.
Yet today, villagers gathered in crowds, buzzing with excitement, drawn by the magical sight of a decrepit house transforming into a brand-new one in just half a day.
They peered through the newly erected iron fence that soared skyward—the wooden fence that had nearly collapsed was replaced only an hour or two ago.
That wasn’t all. The once-simple garden now held ornamental stones and newly planted trees.
The old steps leading to the house had been replaced with marble, and the cracked, crumbling exterior walls were swiftly patched with premium bricks.
The roof, which used to creak in the wind, had been replaced, and storm windows were added to every opening.
Inside the mansion, the changes were just as dramatic.
Luxurious carpets covered the floors, and every door—including the pantry—was swapped for heavy mahogany ones.
The walls were entirely papered with flashy floral wallpaper, and large gilded-framed portraits hung everywhere.
“How about placing the chandelier here?”
Zimmer asked Adele.
At that very moment, a massive chandelier dripping with crystals was about to be installed in the center of the living room.
“St-stop!”
Adele finally cried out, unable to hold back any longer.
Instantly, dozens of workers inside and outside the house, including Zimmer, froze in unison.
“Sir Zimmer.”
“Yes, please speak.”
Adele forced a smile, tensing her stomach as she spoke.
“I’m truly grateful that my old house now looks brand new. But somehow… I feel as though I’ve been forcibly evicted from my own home.”
Zimmer’s expression turned regretful, and he bowed his head respectfully.
“Oh, I’m terribly sorry. In trying to ensure our captain’s comfort, I must have offended you. My thoughts were short-sighted.”
His polite demeanor softened Adele immediately, and she smiled gently.
“No, I’m the one who should thank you for your deep consideration for the count. But he’s only staying briefly—was all this really necessary?”
“I’m simply a perfectionist—it’s the only way I can feel satisfied. But I’ll follow your wishes, madam. After all, this is your house.”
“Thank you for remembering that.”
Trending
Adele felt relieved that her words had taken effect.
“But it’s fine if you redecorate the second floor however you like for the count’s use, right? If you’d like, I can restore it to its original state when he leaves.”
“Well… sigh, do as you please.”
Even Adele couldn’t stop that much.
“Thank you deeply for your understanding. Then—”
Zimmer bowed politely and swiftly directed all the workers on the first floor to move upstairs in perfect unison.
Only then did Adele finally look around the quiet first floor and let out a sigh of relief.
“Why did you do that? This was the perfect chance to completely transform the house!”
Unlike her, Tanya looked deeply disappointed.
“It’s still my home, even if it’s old. It’s a precious haven I’ve nurtured myself. I don’t like others changing it so carelessly.”
“If you ask me, miss, you’re quite the obsessive one.”
“An obsessive? Me?”
“It’s not because it’s a precious haven—it’s just that you’re obsessed with old things.”
“I reject baseless accusations.”
“You can’t even throw away a single old item.”
“Well…”
Adele flushed, momentarily lost for words, then quickly pulled herself together.
“This is different! It’s my house, yet my taste wasn’t considered at all. I absolutely hate that tacky oversized floral wallpaper!”
“I agree completely!”
Just as the two, who had been bickering, found deep mutual understanding again—
“Did I come to the wrong house?”
At the chilly voice, they turned to see Christine standing there, brows furrowed.
Thud, thud, tap…
Christine, seated on the sofa, repeatedly lifted and set down his rapier in its scabbard.
Each time his wrist moved, the tip of the scabbard struck the floor—thud, thud.
The jewels adorning the sword glittered brilliantly, reflecting the sunlight.
The scene was picture-perfect, yet everyone watching held their breath in tense silence.
It seemed as if Christine might draw his sword at any moment and strike down Zimmer standing before him.
“So you were merely fulfilling your duty?”
Christine asked slowly, his voice icy.
“Yes! My duty is to serve the captain without causing him any discomfort. Since this will be his residence, I naturally thought I should give it my utmost attention!”
Though visibly tense, Zimmer firmly defended his actions with conviction.
“Then allow me to give you my response to your ‘utmost.’”
Sssshhk.
Christine’s rapier shot out of its scabbard in an instant.
In that moment, Adele leaped forward, quickly stepping in front of Zimmer.
“It was my request! I asked you to renovate the house as a condition for you staying here! I was the one who asked!”
One of Christine’s eyebrows arched upward.
Adele tensed slightly at his expression but squeezed her eyes shut.
“You’re rich—you can afford this much! So I wanted to take this chance to completely overhaul the house!”
“Did you also request that tacky oversized floral wallpaper?”
“Yes, the oversized floral wallpaper too!”
“Is that true?”
Christine turned to Zimmer for confirmation.
“No.”
“Huh?!”
Shocked by the honest reply, Adele turned to Zimmer in disbelief.
“He says no.”
“Sir Zimmer, think carefully. Don’t try to cover for me. I clearly made that request, didn’t I?”
Adele winked at him, urging him to just agree.

But Zimmer held his rigid at-attention posture and answered honestly.
“No means no, my lady.”
“You stubborn fool!”
As Adele muttered furiously, Christine asked,
“Why are you defending Zimmer so fiercely?”
“Well… life is precious! Sir Zimmer was only thinking of you…”
“What on earth are you thinking, Adele?”
“Huh?”
“Were you afraid I’d actually swing this?”
Christine looked down at his rapier in disbelief, wearing an utterly innocent expression—as if he didn’t even know how to wield a sword.
“…No?”
“What do you take me for? Do you really think I’d kill someone over something so trivial?”
“Yes, Captain—you’re not the type to spill blood on your blade at random.”
Now even Zimmer was taking his side, leaving Adele utterly exasperated.
“Then why did you draw your sword?”
“To clean it.”
As Christine held out the blade,
“Yes, whenever the captain disapproves of my work, he always punishes me by ordering me to polish his sword.”
Zimmer unfolded a neatly folded silk handkerchief and began polishing the blade.
Between the two of them, Adele felt strangely like the fool.
Even Tanya, who had been quietly observing, nodded in agreement—Adele’s frustration was completely justified.
“Honestly, you two…”
Adele shouted toward the workers who had been silently watching.
“Right now, tear down that tacky oversized floral wallpaper! Take away that glaring portrait, that nerve-wracking chandelier, and this carpet that’s bound to become a dust factory! Oh, and block off the staircase connecting the second and first floors—with a steel plate!”
The moment the two men met her fierce glare, they instinctively flinched.
“Her killing intent might overwhelm even the captain.”
“It certainly would.”
As the short winter sun disappeared, darkness quickly fell.
Tanya, who had run errands between Adele and the workers all day, collapsed into bed utterly exhausted.
Adele was also extremely tired, yet she entered the kitchen and tied on an apron.
She was running out of time—she needed to prepare the dessert for the royal palace.
She should have started yesterday, but chaotic events yesterday and today had eaten up all her time. If she didn’t hurry now, she might miss the delivery deadline.
First, she pulled her recipe book from the cupboard drawer—her treasure, filled with all the recipes she’d developed and researched.
Since this was her first delivery, she thought it best to prepare her most confident and reliable dishes.
“First, I’ll prepare the dough that needs to rest…”
Just then, Adele realized the flour was still in the basement pantry—she’d forgotten to ask Tanya to bring it up.
After what happened yesterday, she dreaded going into the basement even more.
If only Christine were here to help—but he’d already returned to the imperial palace,
saying he might not make it back today.
He hadn’t even officially taken up his post yet—what could he possibly be doing at the palace?
And working so late into the night, too.
Where would he even sleep?
Suddenly, she wondered why April had popped into her mind.
“Gasp—what nonsense!”
To have such irreverent thoughts about an unmarried imperial princess!
“Enough distractions—just focus on work!”
Adele picked up a lamp and carefully pushed the handle of the basement door.
Creeeak.
The weight of the newly installed heavy mahogany door somehow felt even more frightening.
“It’s fine—nothing will happen today. Nothing at all…”

As the door opened, damp, dark air rushed over her.
“Huuuh!”
Taking a deep breath, Adele cautiously stepped forward—
Thud, thud…
Heavy footsteps sounded behind her.
She wondered if she’d heard wrong—but soon a pitch-black shadow loomed closer, as if about to swallow her whole. Adele froze completely, unable to move a muscle.
Then something gripped her shoulder tightly.
“Aaah, please…!”
She cried out, her face pale as if about to faint—
“Are you okay?”
A familiar voice reached her ears.
“Haaah!”
Her tension instantly dissolved, and she swayed—Christine caught her before she fell.
Seeing her pale, stiff face, Christine looked even more startled.
“Why were you so scared?”
“It’s nothing. You said you might not make it back today.”
“I said I might not—not that I wouldn’t.”
“Oh… right.”
All this while, Adele’s body had been trembling faintly.
“…Need help?”
“Yeah, could you bring up a sack of flour from the basement?”
“Not that.”
“Huh?”
Christine’s gaze pierced deeply into hers, making Adele flustered.
At times like this, it felt as if he could read her mind—
as if he knew exactly what she feared.

Liu Changning was dumbfounded: Tell me, what makes you like me? I’ll change!

This lifetime, Pei Yuanshao was rejected by the same woman twice!
The first time, she drove him away. Forced by the situation, he endured the waves of anger in his heart, yielding and humbling himself.
That person lay slanted on a rocking chair, her sallow face emotionless: “If you don’t want a divorce, go cook!”
Pei Yuanshao’s face was dark and gloomy: “You!”
The second time, after the crisis in Jinling City was resolved, the new emperor sent someone to pick him up. He turned around, stammering: “I… I have to go. If you keep me…”
That person lay on the kang bed, her back to him, as if she had long anticipated this day, crisp and clear: “Goodbye!”
Pei Yuanshao was so angry his fingers trembled: “You… you!”
The mission of family and country made him restrain himself, averting his eyes and turning to leave this broken household.
Two years later, they met again. Seeing her ethereal face, his body shook like a sieve.
“She was originally a ‘she’!”
At the Qionglin Banquet, the top scholar of the imperial examination, a talented person with exceptional speech and conduct, all the unmarried young gentlemen from aristocratic families looked at her with shy and timid eyes.
The peerless imperial official Pei Yuanshao felt the anger in his heart erupt. He pointed at the woman surrounded by the crowd at the Qionglin Banquet, his thin lips slightly curled: “Little sister, I wants that person to be the wife-master of my Mingde Prince Manor.”
