This Beast Never Sleeps at Night (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 11
“Only for those who are interested.”
Mark said indifferently as he sipped his black tea.
Adele, equally indifferent, pretended not to hear.
Yet being alone with a man who had just confessed his interest in her felt unbearably awkward and embarrassing.
“By the way, is Jade doing well?”
“Yes, that boy’s always cheerful.”
Jade was Mark’s son. His wife had died giving birth to him.
“Would it be all right if I took the leftover pie with me? I think Jade would like it.”
“He’d certainly love it. Though it sounds like you’re already trying to send me off.”
Adele couldn’t bring herself to deny it.
Mark stood up coolly, gathering his medical bag.
“Well then, since I’ve enjoyed such a delicious pie, I’ll head out now with renewed strength.”
Adele rose to follow him and spoke cautiously.
“I’m sorry. It’s still awkward for me to be alone with someone.”
Mark laughed heartily.
His broad smile revealed neat, white teeth between his full lips—quite pleasing to look at.
“To be honest, I’m feeling quite awkward myself.”
Relieved by his candid reply, Adele felt her tension ease.
“So I’ll come visit again when I have time. That way, it’ll feel less awkward.”
Adele hesitated to answer right away and offered only an ambiguous smile.
He seemed like a better man than she’d expected. She felt guilty for having drawn him in merely to quell the rumors about Christine.
“Yes, please come again next time. Bring Jade along too.”
That would make things a little less awkward.
“Haha, I bet Jade will really love that!”
But it seemed Mark himself was the one truly pleased.
Adele carefully wrapped the remaining pie in parchment paper and tied it neatly with a ribbon. Doing this much might at least ease her guilt a little.
Just then—
The sound of a carriage came from beyond the garden.
“……!”
Adele’s face stiffened as she peered out the window, wondering who had arrived.
Meanwhile, the man who had stepped down from the carriage strode boldly toward her house.
“Who is it?”
Mark asked, sensing something unusual in the atmosphere.
Knock knock.
At that moment, a knock sounded—and before anyone could respond, the door opened.
“What brings you here without even a word?”
Surprised, Adele asked, but Christine frowned and replied,
“Am I interrupting a pleasant moment?”
She could guess exactly what misunderstanding he might be having right now. Yet Adele made no effort to correct him.
“Let me introduce you. This is Baron Mark Cassler. And this is….”
“Count Weiss, I presume? I’ve heard much about you.”
Mark offered a greeting with his usual gentle smile.
But Christine merely stared at him. Though his expression was blank, his steel-gray eyes were icy and sharp.
“Chris….”
Adele called his name cautiously.
“What a pity. I’ve never heard of any baron.”
“That’s rude, Chris.”
Adele scolded him, embarrassed, but Christine smiled. His lips curved upward, yet his eyes fixed on Mark were even more menacing than before.
“You should’ve told me earlier, Adele. So the man you’re seeing is just some lowly baron?”
“Chris!”
Trending
“Still, as the former Marchioness, shouldn’t you at least match your status when choosing someone to see?”
“Count Christine Weiss!”
At her sharp tone, Christine turned to look at Adele—still smiling only with his mouth.
As the atmosphere grew tense, Mark stepped in awkwardly to defuse the situation.
“I’ll formally greet you another time. I’ll come back with Jade later, Adele.”
And then….
Smooch!
He kissed Adele on the cheek.
“……!”
Completely unexpected.
Too flustered to react, Adele could only gape at him with wide eyes, speechless.
While she stood frozen, Mark strode briskly out of the mansion.
Now only Adele and Christine remained in the house.
Outside the window, twilight settled over the evening.
“An invitation from the princess.”
Christine broke the silence first.
He tossed a pink envelope onto the table.
Inside, Adele found an invitation bearing the imperial crest.
It requested her presence for tea that weekend afternoon—conveniently the same day she was scheduled to deliver desserts to the palace.
“Did you come just to give me this?”
“I also wanted to check if you’d forgotten your promise.”
“Promise? Oh… the apple pie.”
Adele tilted her head, as if recalling it only now.
But how could she forget?
She’d been researching daily to recreate an apple pie that tasted exactly like her mother’s. Once she succeeded, she’d planned to invite him. But right now, she didn’t want to tell him the truth—
Because she was still angry at his rudeness.
Meanwhile, Christine noticed the wrapped apple pie on the table—the one Adele, startled by Mark’s sudden kiss, had forgotten to hand over.
“Doesn’t look like you made this expecting me… Is it his?”
He leaned back on the sofa, resting an arm on the backrest, and spoke haughtily.
“It’s packed for his child.”
“So he’s got a kid too?”
His perfectly straight brow twisted deeply in displeasure.
“I’ve been married once myself.”
“Well, considering your first marriage was to an old marquis, marrying a baron with a child the second time wouldn’t be surprising at all.”
His sarcastic tone struck a painful chord in Adele.
“It’s my marriage. What right do you have to…!”
Christine leaned forward and gently brushed aside the strand of hair that had fallen onto Adele’s forehead.
“Didn’t you yourself say I’m practically like your younger brother? Doesn’t that give me every right to speak about this marriage?”
Adele quickly swatted his hand away.
“You just want to criticize me!”
Where his fingers had brushed her skin, it burned.
“Then you understood me perfectly.”
Adele felt a surge of emotion.
Whose fault was this anyway…?
She’d finally escaped people’s attention and could live quietly—yet ever since he reappeared, her life had grown complicated again.
Simply being associated with him made every noble in Greenhill watch her like a hawk.
The moment anyone found even the tiniest flaw, they’d eagerly gossip about it.
Whispering behind her back, pointing fingers….
She’d pretended not to care, but she was utterly sick of it now.
Perhaps she no longer wanted to be entangled with him—for her own sake.

“I’ll invite you another time. If you’re done with your business, leave.”
“No, I feel like eating apple pie today.”
“I already said I’d invite you next time!”
“Do I really need an invitation? It’s my sis.ter’s house, after all.”
“Chris!”
He leaned back into the sofa again and added lazily,
“I’m even considering staying over. It is my sis.ter’s house, isn’t it?”
“Count Christine Weiss!”
At Adele’s irritated outburst, Christine finally let out a soft chuckle.
“Well, I suppose you have every right to be angry. You even sent the maids away, probably planning to have some fun tonight.”
Adele was stunned by his absurd misunderstanding.
When anger ran too deep, sometimes you couldn’t even bring yourself to shout.
“…You’re just the same.”
She muttered, her voice trembling as if about to cry, and Christine paused to look at her.
“You believe the rumors too, just like everyone else—thinking I’m that kind of woman. Poisoning my husband, driven mad by lust, sleeping with any man….”
Only then did Christine realize he’d hurt her.
From the moment he’d entered the house, the instant he saw her alone with another man, fury had overwhelmed him—his reason thrown to the wind.
“If it was a misunderstanding, I apologize. But what’s with all that makeup? And flowers in your hair? You looked like a woman who’d lost her mind—how could I not misunderstand?”
Only then did Adele remember she must look like a deranged woman chasing after a rat. But she didn’t explain that she hadn’t chosen this appearance herself.
“…Fine. I wanted to look nice for him. Whether I intended to ‘have fun’ or not, I don’t know.”
Christine’s quiet breath caught audibly.
“Are you seriously thinking of remarrying that man?”
“What’s wrong with that? I’m tired of being alone.”
It was the truth.
For the past eight years, Adele had endured horrific rumors and clung fiercely to life.
Perhaps, deep down, she’d always longed for someone to lean on—anyone at all….
Oddly enough, Christine sometimes came to mind.
That boy from her happy childhood days.
“You of all people should know marriage isn’t salvation.”
His persistent gaze made Adele feel trapped.
He seemed to be asking about her first marriage.
No matter how much she’d once admired noble life, why had she married an old marquis at just eighteen?
And why was she living so unhappily now?
What had happened all this time…?
But Adele instinctively avoided his eyes and murmured,
“If I have someone to lean on, that’s enough. I don’t need anything more.”
“Is that really a reason to marry?”
“What’s so special about marriage anyway?”
Adele smiled with resignation.
It was true.
She’d never seriously considered marrying Mark, but if it happened, it wouldn’t be so bad.
He’d surely be a dependable and faithful husband.
“Lean on me instead.”
“What?”
Surprised, Adele looked up—and Christine scowled.
“If you’re marrying just because you need someone to rely on, then at least rely on me.”
“That’s absurd….”
“Why? Do I still look like your little brother?”
Impossible.
He was far too much of a man for that.

“You’re going to marry the princess.”
“What does that have to do with anything? Is it strange for siblings to depend on each other?”
“Those words really give me strength. But when I rely on someone, I also want to be their strength in return—that’s why people marry, isn’t it?”
With you, I wouldn’t need to lean on anyone.
“Is he that person?”
Someone whose mere thought brings comfort, someone so precious you’d gladly bear their burdens.
‘You were the only one like that for me, Chris.’
But Adele swallowed those words deep inside and simply nodded.
“Probably.”
A vein throbbed at Christine’s temple. But he soon rose with a cold smile.
“My apologies for barging in and ruining your pleasant time.”
“It’s fine. Thank you for the invitation.”
Adele held up the invitation, pretending nonchalance.
Slam!
Christine shut the door and left.
Adele pulled back the curtain by the window and watched his retreating figure.
She couldn’t even blink, afraid to miss a single moment.
Soon, the carriage carrying him vanished into the twilight’s gathering darkness.
Only then did her legs give out, and she sank onto the sofa.
‘It’s okay. I’m really okay….’
As always, she’d sleep it off and wake up as if nothing had happened. Just like before—bake bread in the morning, chat with Mia, and eventually forget all about Christine.
After all, she’d lived well enough without him until now.
‘I’ve endured far worse and tougher things.’
Composing herself, Adele added logs to the dying fireplace and lit the lamp.
The house, as cold and dark as her heart had been, quickly grew warm and bright again. That alone gave her a little strength.
“Pull yourself together, Adele. When you feel like this, just work. When are you finally going to make the dessert for the palace?”
She had to finish the dessert for the palace by the weekend. It was her first delivery—and she’d be having tea with the princess that day. Just thinking about it made her feel like she was stepping onto an exam stage, nerves on edge.
She stood up again, tied on her apron, and rolled up her sleeves determinedly.
“Tanya, could you bring some flour from the basement storeroom…!”
Then she remembered—Tanya wasn’t here right now.
Adele hesitated for a moment.
She’d have to go get it herself, then.
There was no flour already set out, so she had no choice.
Creak…
She carefully opened the old door beside the stairs. The rusted hinges let out a sharp, grating shriek that sent chills down her spine. From the open doorway rose a chill draft and the musty smell unique to cellars.
Adele shuddered involuntarily.
“I really never wanted to go into the basement again.”
She took a deep breath, then held her lamp into the doorway. Flickering lamplight revealed the stairs descending below.
Though there were only a few steps, Adele placed one hand on the wall and the other holding the lamp, carefully setting down each foot. Her legs trembled slightly without her even realizing it.
Jingle jingle, jingle jingle…!
Suddenly, a loud ringing of bells filled the air.
Bells were hung around the property to scare off wild animals that occasionally came down from the mountains or intruders intent on harming her.
Most unwanted visitors would flee in fear at the sound of these bells. Just hanging them up had proven highly effective at keeping trouble away.
But this time, the ringing didn’t stop.
Jingle jingle, jingle jingle…!
