This Beast Never Sleeps at Night (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 13
“Just a little longer… Can’t you stay with me? I know I look pathetic, but just for a while… okay?”
Her eyes looked up at him, pleading.
Christine turned his gaze away—their eyes were too pitiful to bear.
“Just a little while.”
“Thank you….”
Adele, looking as if she might burst into tears any second, forced a smile again. But she remained seated on the floor, unable to stand for a while.
“I’ll get up in a moment. My legs just feel a bit weak.”
In an instant, Adele’s body was lifted into the air.
“Christine!”
“If you’re about to say you’re fine, keep your mouth shut. Seriously… I’ll really leave.”
He threatened her with a sulky expression as he held her in his arms.
Seeing that familiar expression she’d known for so long, Adele couldn’t help but smile a little.
“Mm… I won’t.”
Then she wrapped both arms tightly around his thick neck.
She’d been so terrified that her limbs still trembled, and her racing heartbeat refused to calm. But nestled in his broad embrace, she felt unexpectedly secure and at ease.
Now that she thought about it, this was the first time since her mother’s passing.
The first time she’d leaned on someone so completely.
Thump thump.
Her heartbeat seemed to quicken just a bit more.
“Your wound’s opened again.”
After placing Adele on the bed, he began treating her hand first.
The cut from swinging her dagger the other day had reopened.
“It’s not a big wound, so it’s fine.”
Christine seemed to swallow his words, took a quiet breath, and then pulled the blanket over her.
“Don’t think about anything—just get some sleep.”
“I don’t think I can sleep.”
“Could you at least give me some wine?”
There happened to be wine on the fireplace mantle.
Her bedroom, like the rest of the mansion, was small and cozy. Sturdy oak-colored furniture filled the space, white cotton bedding embroidered with delicate patterns was neatly laid out, and vibrant tapestries along with dried flowers adorned the walls.
The wine on the fireplace looked slightly out of place in this room.
“Drinking on an empty stomach will hurt your stomach.”
She’d been so busy baking pies and hosting guests that she herself had eaten nothing.
“Could you bring me something to eat, then?”
“Thank you, but I don’t think anything will go down….”
Then Adele met Christine’s fierce gaze and gave an awkward smile.
“Sorry. I’m being difficult.”
“So you do understand.”
As Christine sharply turned to leave the room,
“You’re not… leaving, right?”
Adele’s startled voice followed him.
At the pitiful tone, he smiled reassuringly.
“I’ll be right back.”
When Christine returned to the room, he held a wooden tray.
On it sat a neatly wrapped apple pie, milk, and a few pieces of fruit arranged quite nicely.
“I told them to tidy up the house a bit. But this was all I could find to eat.”
Adele felt embarrassed, as if he were pointing out her poverty.
She’d spent every last coin she had recently on dessert ingredients, so her pantry was nearly empty.
“We haven’t prepared dinner yet. If you look, there are potatoes and mushrooms too….”
Christine held out a triangular slice of pie.
“Eat first. You’re all bones—I heard them clattering when I carried you.”

“That’s ridiculous… mmph!”
Christine had shoved the pie into her mouth.
“It makes perfect sense. If those guys had landed even one solid hit, several of your bones would’ve broken.”
“Mmmph…! Tha… I’m not… frail…!”
Adele couldn’t speak properly, her mouth full of pie.
“What was that? I didn’t hear you.”
Christine leaned his ear close to her lips, then nodded as if he understood.
“Oh, so you agree with everything I said?”
“…Don’t… make things… up!”
“So you’re saying you’re so grateful you don’t know how to repay this kindness?”
“Hey!”
“Well, if you’re truly that thankful, how about granting me one request?”
Christine gave her a sweet, gentle smile meant to melt her resolve.
Adele, having finally swallowed the pie, asked,
“If it’s… something I can do.”
She owed him a debt—she ought to offer something in return. Absolutely not because his smile had stirred her heart. Absolutely not.
“It’s nothing difficult.”
“Tell me.”
“I want to move into your house.”
Adele tilted her head in confusion.
“But you’re already inside?”
“For a while longer.”
“For a while longer?”
“I’ll likely be assigned to the Royal Guard soon. So I won’t be able to return to my territory and will need to stay near the palace.”
“But our house is far from the palace. You could easily find a good mansion nearby.”
“I already did—right in front of the palace. But it needs repairs and staff, so I need somewhere to stay temporarily.”
“But there’s really no proper place for you to stay in our house….”
“The second floor seems unused. I’ll take that.”
“Christine, I told you. It’s not good for you to get involved with me.”
“Don’t worry. I won’t let your man misunderstand.”
“That’s not what I meant.”
“If it’s about the princess, don’t worry. April will understand perfectly well.”
April….
Right, he had the princess. He’d called her name so affectionately.
So he surely had no other intentions.
It was just me, worrying for no reason.
“Give me a little time to think.”
“What if something like today happens again?”
Adele flinched without realizing it.
“You must feel in danger if you always carry a sword. Surely you don’t enjoy those perilous situations.”
“Of course not.”
After what happened, Eton probably wouldn’t come back. But there was no guarantee something like this wouldn’t happen again.
Just recalling that horrifying moment made Adele’s whole body stiffen.
What if Christine hadn’t returned then…?
“By the way, how did you come back so quickly?”
“I heard the bell.”
“You’d been gone for quite a while. Weren’t you far away?”
“My hearing’s just sharp.”
“That’s unbelievable.”
Anyway, she couldn’t imagine how lucky she was that he was there today of all days.

“For now… only until your house repairs are done.”
Adele cautiously gave her permission.
“Of course. By then, I won’t stay even if you hold me back.”
Then Christine handed her a cup of warm milk.
“Drink. You’ll sleep well. I added sugar.”
Adele was slightly surprised.
When she was little and couldn’t sleep, her mother used to give her warm milk with sugar.
“You knew that too?”
“You told me yourself. Said it works instantly when you can’t sleep.”
Did I? He remembered it so well.
“I’ll drink it properly.”
Adele took the cup with both hands. Just feeling its warmth in her palms made her feel pleasantly drowsy.
As she sipped the milk, her eyes met Christine’s steady gaze, and she gave an awkward smile.
“I feel like I’ve gone back to childhood. You should have some too, Christine.”
Setting down the milk cup, Adele carefully offered him a slice of pie.
“It’s not as good as Mom’s, but it’s tasty.”
“Nah. Why would I eat something you made for someone else?”
“You might not believe me, but I’ve actually been baking apple pies hoping to invite you over. I wanted to make one that tasted exactly like Mom’s and finally invite you.”
When Christine narrowed his eyes skeptically, she pouted.
“If you don’t believe me, forget it.”
“Then make me believe you.”
At his serious tone, Adele gave a bitter smile.
“To be honest… I’ve deliberately avoided making apple pies until now. Because it brings back too many memories….”
She was afraid she’d long to return to those days.
Wanting something impossible only brings unhappiness.
“Ah….”
Christine opened his mouth—as if asking to be fed.
“I fed you, so now you feed me.”
“You didn’t feed me—you just shoved it in!”
Still, Adele obediently placed the pie into Christine’s mouth.
Chomp!
In that instant, he grabbed her wrist and took a large bite, pulling even her fingers into his mouth.
“…!”
Startled by the hot sensation brushing over her skin, Adele yanked her hand back.
“Tastes better than I expected.”
Christine chewed the pie earnestly, as if oblivious to everything.
But Adele’s finger, grazed by his tongue, burned as if scalded.
“Aren’t you going to eat?”
“Huh? Well, yeah… eat….”
Just as Adele took another sip of milk,
the cup suddenly slipped smoothly from her hands. Christine had snatched it and taken a drink.
And, of all places, he drank from the exact spot her lips had touched. The milk clinging to the rim vanished between his lips.
“….”
“Why are you staring like that?”
He asked innocently, as if completely unaware.
“You still drink with milk on your lips.”
Adele wiped his mouth with the finger still tingling from heat—
naturally, just as she always had when they were children.
Yet the moment her fingertip brushed his lips, her heart began pounding wildly. His lips felt far softer and plusher than she’d imagined.
Her cheeks flushed from an inexplicable heat, leaving her flustered.

Why am I acting like this…?
“The milk’s already working—I’m getting sleepy.”
Adele quickly pulled the blanket up and lay down.
“Should I stay beside you until you fall asleep?”
“It’s okay. I think I’ll fall asleep soon.”
“Then I’ll go.”
“Yeah… thank you so much for staying with me like today.”
“I’ll bring my things as soon as possible.”
“Mm.”
Adele slowly closed her eyes like a drowsy child.
‘Is it really okay to live with him?’
Could she keep her strange, fluttering feelings hidden every time she saw him?
“About that pie….”
A voice right in front of her made Adele jolt awake.
He was looking down at her, so close their faces nearly touched. The moment their deep eyes met, Adele quickly turned her head—but it was useless. He gently cupped her cheek, turning her face back to his.
Don’t look away from me, Adele.
His touch was gentle yet firm, as if speaking those very words.
And he looked as if he might lower his head and kiss her at any moment.
As if under a spell, all strength left her body. An unfamiliar heat made her dizzy.
If he kissed her, maybe…?
Peck.
His lips lightly brushed her cheek before pulling away.
“It tastes just like the one from back then—the first one you ever gave me.”
While Adele stared at him, bewildered, Christine simply turned and walked away.
His footsteps faded into the distance…,
Thud!
The door closed.
“Haaah…!”
Adele exhaled the breath she’d been holding and released the blanket she’d gripped tightly. Her palms were already damp with sweat.
Now that she thought about it, the first thing she’d ever given Christine was an apple pie.
He’d remembered that taste all this time.
Thud, thud….
Heavy footsteps echoed through the darkness.
Eton, who’d lost consciousness, barely opened his eyes at the sound.
“Ugh! Ngh!”
Realizing he was bound to a chair, fear shot through him. But a gag in his mouth kept him from uttering a word.
Right after fleeing Adele’s house, something had struck his neck, knocking him out. Now he’d awakened, tied up like this.
It was just like at Mrs. Hans’ party.
‘Could it be Count Weiss again?’
The only difference from then was that he’d been dragged to some unknown place.
Pitch-black all around, with shattered stained glass scattered about—it looked like an abandoned religious site.
‘Why bring me here?’
Meanwhile, the footsteps kept echoing through the darkness, drawing closer.
Finally, moonlight streaming through a broken window revealed a pair of long legs clad in boots.
Terrified, Eton instinctively looked up.
Count Weiss!
It was him, as expected.
Just then, a gust of wind sent Christine’s hair fluttering like silver.
The sight was breathtakingly beautiful yet chilling—goosebumps rose on his skin. The atmosphere was entirely different from when he’d seen him earlier at Adele’s house.
Beautiful, yet cold, with not a trace of a smile.
