“In the original story, someone mistook Heaven Herb for Flame Herb and fed it to Kian while he had a raging fever, nearly killing him. That’s why Marquis Raydocs felt so guilty toward Kian and treated him even better afterward. So this time, I’ve already instructed Durion to go get the Flame Herb in advance.”

Heaven Herb and Flame Herb looked very similar, making them hard to distinguish, but one could tell them apart by their subtle difference in scent. Durion, known almost as a bloodhound for his sense of smell, would surely have identified it correctly.

Kian’s small, fern-like hands were completely covered in thick calluses, cracked and split in many places.

My heart ached. How much must this child have suffered for his hands to end up like this?

“Sikar, could you get me some Andiroba oil?”

“You mean the Andiroba from the tropical rainforest?”

“Yes, that’s the one I need. Is it very hard to obtain?”

“It’s not difficult to get.”

“Then please get some. I need to apply it to Kian’s hands.”

“If it’s just for that, there’s no need to use oil. The Duke’s mansion has plenty of healing potions.”

‘Ah, right—this world has potions.’

As soon as we arrived at the Duke’s mansion, the servants—who naturally assumed we’d gone on a trip—hurried after us in surprise upon seeing Sikar carrying a child in his arms. But at Sikar’s sharp command to leave immediately, they vanished without a trace.

Without even taking time to change out of my dress, I followed Sikar into Kian’s room, which had already been prepared. Shortly afterward, Durion appeared and handed Sikar the Flame Herb and a potion.

At Sikar’s gesture signaling he could leave, Durion bowed politely to us and exited the room.

Sikar personally fed Kian the Flame Herb and sprinkled the healing potion onto the scaly skin of his hands. Then we held our breath, watching silently as we waited for Kian to wake up.

After some time, Kian began to open his eyes groggily. Suddenly, like a frightened wild animal, he darted into a corner of the room, flattened himself against the floor, and emitted small flames from both hands.

As the son of a Fire Spirit Caller, Kian was skilled at handling fire. Him summoning a fire spirit from his hands meant he viewed us with hostility.

“It’s okay. We won’t hurt you.”

Even after hearing those words, Kian still didn’t seem reassured. His eyes darted around nervously, searching for an escape route.

Sikar frowned as he watched Kian clutching flames in both hands, then turned to me and said,

“If that brat doesn’t correct his behavior, he’ll struggle to stay alive.”

To calm Kian down, I held out my palm with a gentle smile.

“Kian, we’re the ones who found you collapsed and brought you here. We truly won’t hurt you.”

I withdrew my warm gaze from Kian and roughly pulled Sikar toward me.

“You do understand that becoming a good father is the whole point of adopting him, right?”

“Of course.”

“Then why say things like that? You need to show him we can take good care of him!”

“I won’t tolerate bad manners in my house. If he misbehaves, I’ll discipline him without hesitation.”

That’s not discipline—that’s intimidation.

Maybe I was asking too much from Sikar, a twenty-two-year-old who’d never seen or interacted with a child before.

“Since we decided together to adopt Kian and raise him well, just promise me one thing.”

“What promise?”

“Promise me that whenever it concerns Kian, you’ll listen carefully to what I say. Only then can we raise him properly.”

Sikar didn’t answer immediately, appearing thoughtful for a moment before nodding with an indifferent look.

“Fine. In return, you’ll need to correct that behavior of his as well.”

“I will, as long as you treat him warmly.”

Sikar paused briefly in thought, then gave a slight nod to signal agreement.

‘Whew. That wasn’t easy to convince him.’

Together with Sikar, I approached the corner where Kian was hiding and held out my hand.

Though Kian raised both flame-spewing hands like a beast baring its claws, his eyes were brimming with fear.

“We found you lying on the road in the dead of winter. We couldn’t just leave you to freeze to death. If we wanted to hurt you, we wouldn’t have brought you here.”

Kian still didn’t extinguish the flames in his hands, clearly unconvinced.

His frightened eyes stared at me intently, as if trying to read my heart.

“You… really won’t hurt me…?”

Because he’d constantly faced death, he feared strangers—yet in his eyes, there was a faint, fragile hope that maybe we were truly good people.

Having lived through cold, hunger, loneliness, and fear with nowhere to turn, Kian desperately needed a safe haven for both his heart and body.

“Of course not. We won’t hurt you. Never.”

Kian pointed cautiously at Sikar with wary eyes.

“But that mister over there…”

“Yes. He’s just still clumsy at dealing with people—that’s all.”

Kian wore a thoughtful expression, though he clearly didn’t fully understand.

“In any case, you’re hurt, in pain, and very hungry right now. You need treatment. Won’t you stay here and let us take care of you until you’re better?”

Kian glanced nervously at Sikar, then gave a careful nod and finally extinguished the flames in his hands.

‘Phew. Thank goodness.’

“If you want to get along well with us, you’ll need to make an effort too, okay? From now on, don’t just suddenly spew fire from your hands like that. Can you promise me that?”

Kian glanced again at Sikar, who responded by lifting his scabbard slightly—as if to say he’d draw his sword if fire appeared again—then lowered it.

Kian briefly frowned at Sikar but then cautiously nodded again as he looked at me.

At least it ended neatly.

Perhaps because Kian’s body hadn’t fully recovered yet, after falling asleep again, he showed no signs of waking until the next day.

After leaving Kian’s room, I had breakfast with Sikar. Because I hadn’t slept properly the previous night while taking care of Kian, my eyes were half-closed even during the meal.

Sikar suddenly dismissed all the servants during breakfast and turned to me, saying,

“You clearly know nothing about dining etiquette. The roast meat in the center isn’t something you carve yourself—you should ask a servant to do it for you.”

So that’s why he sent the servants away first—to prevent them from looking down on me.

It probably wasn’t out of consideration for me, but rather because he saw me as his wife.

“You’ll need to learn some dining etiquette from me from now on.”

I didn’t want to learn anything from Sikar. It was obvious he’d teach me with threats of life or death.

Did I really need to risk my life just to learn something?

“Couldn’t you just assign me an etiquette tutor instead? Or give me some books on the subject? I learn theoretical concepts faster than practical training anyway.”

“So that’s why you had so much hands-on training during early childhood education?”

Ugh… Talking to someone who reads all your memories is exhausting. You can’t even lie.

Sikar smirked, lifting one corner of his mouth.

“You know what kind of person I am, yet you still thought about lying to me? Foolish.”

I surrender quickly—that’s just how I am.

“Fine. I’ll study hard.”

“Jin Yura.”

Jin Yura—that was my name.

Hearing Sikar suddenly call my name gave me a strange feeling—not a pleasant one, but more like the eerie sensation of hearing your name called right before execution.

“Y-yes…?”

“You have weak digestion. Meat takes you a long time to digest, doesn’t it?”

He noticed even things I never mentioned… Maybe having my memories read isn’t entirely bad?

“So whenever you eat meat, always take digestive medicine too. It’d be unseemly for the Duchess to burp frequently.”

“I-I can handle that myself just fine…!”

“But you once burped while accepting a confession from a boy you liked, and during your very first kindergarten teaching practicum, you greeted the kids with, ‘Hello, everyone… burp…’ If you act like that here, it’ll be very problematic.”

…Please just forget those things! Yeah, having my memories read really isn’t good.

I couldn’t even raise my head from embarrassment as he calmly recounted my mortifying past moments with a perfectly dignified expression.

‘He dismissed everyone just to say that, didn’t he?’

Feeling like I’d lose my appetite entirely—not because of the meat, but because of Sikar—I carefully stood up.

“Dessert hasn’t even been served yet. Where are you going?”

“I don’t think I can stay for dessert, so I’m leaving now.”

Just as I turned to exit the dining room, I heard a sharp, dull thud behind me. Turning back, I saw a steak knife embedded in the table.

“Sit back down. We still have much to discuss.”

Apparently, pulling out a knife first was definitely Sikar’s way of having a conversation.

My hands trembled as I went back and sat down.

“I just thought… maybe resting a bit first wouldn’t be too late…”

I forced a smile onto my awkward face. Was I really becoming this submissive just because he kept intimidating me?

Maybe that’s exactly why Sikar always drew his knife first in conversations—because he skillfully exploited people’s psychological weaknesses.

He knew everyone’s vulnerabilities too well thanks to his memory-reading ability.

Sikar took a spoonful of fruit pudding into his mouth and said,

“As you know, the King is searching for Kian. In the novel, Marquis Raydocs hid the royal crest on Kian’s neck.”

In the original story, the royal crest was the mark that allowed Marquis Raydocs to recognize Kian as royalty.

Chapter 120 Chapter 119

Knowing that King Gillian was searching for Kian, the Marquis had gone to his friend to hide the crest.

Hiding the crest itself wasn’t difficult, but since it was a royal symbol, he needed someone trustworthy—his friend, the mage Germy Aiker.

However, to do that, we first needed to meet Raydocs—but Sikar and Raydocs had a terrible relationship.

Both Sikar and I knew this fact, so I spoke bluntly.

“Since you and Raydocs don’t get along, I’ll go.”

“What do you plan to say? Raydocs could just report to Gillian that Kian is here.”

In the original story, Raydocs’s daughter—the female lead, Lucy—often ran away saying she missed her mother. I planned to use that to my advantage and persuade Raydocs.

“I’ll find Lucy when she runs away saying she misses her mother and bring her safely back home. That way, we’ll naturally become closer.”

Sikar nodded approvingly.

“Not a bad idea.”

“The Marquis is kind and deeply loves children. This is our best option.”

“Then let’s proceed with that.”

“And once Kian wakes up, it’d be best if you fed him.”

Just as I stood to leave, Sikar stared at me, clearly taken aback by what I’d said.

“You want me to feed Kian? He’s not a three-year-old—he’s seven!”

“To become his father, you need to bond with him. Taking care of him when he’s sick builds trust.”

Sikar looked away from me as if my suggestion was utterly ridiculous.

“I’ve never fed a child before.”

“But you agreed to fully follow my advice on childcare matters, and I told you that caring for him when he’s sick is the most effective approach!”

His gaze, which had avoided mine moments ago, now glared directly at me. I nervously watched his hand, wondering if it would reach for his dagger.

Ah, it’s so scary! When he stares like that, it’s terrifying!

“Come here.”

“Why…?”

“I don’t know how to feed a child, so I’ll borrow your memories for a moment.”

‘Ugh, here we go again—he’s going to grab my arm.’

Though I grumbled inwardly, I weakly walked over and sat beside Sikar, offering my arm as if it were routine.

At this point, it really did feel routine—we’d done this far too many times.

Sikar took my arm again and began reading my memories—but he didn’t just read them.

He picked up a spoon, dipped it into the pudding in front of me, and moved as if to feed it to me.

Startled, I quickly pulled back and asked,

“W-what are you doing?”

“Practicing.”

I was flustered. This madman, who looked perfectly composed on the outside, might shove not just the pudding but the spoon into my mouth too—and above all, it felt incredibly awkward.

“You won’t accept it?”

‘Better just eat it before he pulls out that knife again.’

Helpless, I opened my mouth and accepted the pudding he offered—but I couldn’t taste its usual deliciousness at all.

This was seriously uncomfortable.

“Let’s try once more.”

Sikar had a relentless habit of mastering anything he learned. When practicing swordsmanship, he wouldn’t stop until he’d fully mastered the technique.

So naturally, he kept feeding me pudding until the act felt completely natural to him.

“Um… I really can’t eat any more.”

“Alright. Then I’ll call Vika and have her demonstrate feeding him.”

If that’s what he was going to do anyway, he should’ve just practiced with Vika from the start! I’d been worried he’d stubbornly refuse to do it at all, so seeing him make an effort to feed Kian was actually a relief.

“Well then, I think I’ve done everything I needed to, so I’ll be off now.”

“But you.”

Why’s he calling me again?

I forced a smile, trying my best not to sound irritated.

“Yes?”

“You cried when I died.”

Regret With All Your Might (Completed Main Story)

27/12/2025
Side Story 5 Side Story 4

When scheming men desperately battle for her favor in the male harem

This one’s also on my reread list! The rivalry, scheming between the men in the imperial harem are just as intense and thrilling as in classic palace drama novels, where concubines fight to the death. Give it a read, girls! I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Synopsis:

“I am not worthy of her… but I still want to be by her side, even if only as a loyal dog…”

Those were the painful whispers of Yue Guanyi – the proud Crown Prince of the Great Qi, who was torn between deep love and a guilty conscience. Despite holding the supreme power of the Imperial Guard, he still could not forget the dark past when he was sold into a brothel.

Fate played a cruel twist when Qiu Shuzhi – a young female official who had just passed the imperial examinations with top honors – stepped into his life. She did not know that she was the one who had saved him from a tragic fate many years ago. And now, her heart was the target of pursuit for both Yue Guanyi and the powerful Empress Dowager Qin Qing.

While Yue Guanyi only dared to silently care for and protect the one he loved from afar, the  Empress Dowager Qin Qing openly expressed his feelings and did not hesitate to take advantage of his power to approach Qiu Shuzhi. The covert struggle between the two most powerful forces in the imperial court began…

Trigger warning: All men in this novel are yandere style.
