“I found it on the way.”
Has he suddenly gone mad?
Sikar abruptly entered my room and tossed a jewelry box onto the table—as if it might contain a ring—and said exactly that.
“You said that in your world, people give gifts like this, right? ‘Found it on the way,’ they say.”
I stood there dumbfounded for a moment before picking up the jewelry box Sikar had thrown onto the table.
He twitched his lips as if urging me to open it right away, but fearing a curse or ghost might spring out, I cautiously opened the box with one eye half-closed.
But inside wasn’t a curse or a ghost at all.
Truly, unimaginably, a ring popped out from within.
And not just any ring—it was a diamond-like gemstone ring, its surface densely studded with precious stones.
“Is this… for me?”
“Didn’t you ask for something round?”
Does this guy know he’s the villain in the novel, or has his mind snapped?
“I did ask, but I never thought you’d actually give it to me…”
‘You’re not that kind of character!’
Anyway, unable to refuse such an expensive gift, I forced back a smile and picked up the ring.
‘It must be extremely costly. How much could it be worth?’
Better to ask outright if I’m curious.
“How much is this worth?”
“Why? Don’t you like it?”
If I say I like it, he’ll probably buy me another one next time, right? Then I should act as if I adore it.
Might as well enjoy this rare good mood.
I put on an expression so utterly enchanted it was as if I were twirling through a field of rapeseed blossoms in spring.

“Really? I’m glad you like it. Since I bought something you like, you probably don’t need another ring now, do you?”
Sikar shattered my expectations beautifully.
Shouldn’t he have said, ‘Since you like it so much, I’ll get you another one’?
Why do you have to think like that? Why can’t you think like normal people for once?
The novel described Sikar as a politely insane man, but I suspect the description was wrong. Maybe he’s just plain insane?
Anyway, since there are two rings, I should at least secure this one properly.
“But isn’t Kian awake yet?”
“Yeah. Not yet.”
“That’s strange.”
‘If we’re talking about strange, you’re the strangest thing in this world.’
“We didn’t even switch the herbs—Kian still hasn’t woken up. We didn’t give him Flame Grass either, so why won’t he awaken?”
“He’s probably just in pain. Anyway, as the protagonist, he won’t die here.”
“Don’t you find that odd?”
“Well, yes—but in the original story, he didn’t wake up for a whole week either.”
“That’s exactly why it’s even stranger! I’m trying to change the plot so I won’t die at his hands, yet everything’s unfolding just as it did originally.”
The moment Sikar said that, a chill ran down my spine.
If what he’s saying is true, no matter how much we change things, Sikar is still destined to die.

“So no matter how hard we try, we can’t change the original story?”
‘Please don’t look at me while saying lines like that.’
But because he did look at me while speaking, his words sounded exactly like, ‘Then I’ll just kill everyone.’
“No, that can’t be. We definitely can change the original story.”
The man who’d just given me a ring pulled his longsword from his waist again—the first time in a while.
‘Are threats of killing really that boring to you now…?’
“If you want to live, make my life end in a happy ending.”
‘For a villain, you’re awfully demanding a happy ending too.’
I gave a laugh that was nearly a sob and gently stepped aside from the sword he held, patting him reassuringly. In that moment, something suddenly clicked.
“I—I need to go see Kian!”
I rushed over and touched Kian’s forehead and body. Though not as severe as when we first found him, the boy’s body was still running a high fever, just as I’d expected.
With a fever persisting this long, it could mean a severe bacterial infection—perhaps even sepsis.
In such cases, antibiotics are far more important than fever reducers.
‘So in the original story, the problem wasn’t caused by giving him Flame Grass after all.’
Sikar, who’d followed behind me, stood leaning sideways, watching me with a look that asked whether I could handle this.
“I thought your profession wasn’t a doctor?”
“Sikar! Maybe we’ve been relying too much on the original plot!”
“Then what should we rely on?”
“He seems to have a serious bacterial infection! We need antibiotics. Call a doctor!”
“I’ll summon someone to treat him promptly.”
Though Kian’s body still burned with fever, thanks to his fire affinity, it wasn’t visibly apparent on the surface.
Just how severe had it been when we first found him?
Outwardly, Kian simply appeared to be sleeping peacefully—he wasn’t groaning or drenched in cold sweat.
No wonder no one had noticed.
About an hour after we’d stayed by Kian’s side, the people Sikar had summoned finally arrived.
But the person he’d called wasn’t a doctor—it was the King’s High Priest, Raizemon.
‘Ah, right—this is a fantasy world with priests!’
Raizemon appeared to be in his mid-to-late thirties but looked even younger. He seemed dignified and calm at first glance.
After briefly introducing himself to me, he began examining Kian.
“My wife mentioned it might be a bacterial infection. What do you think?”
“Your Grace is absolutely correct. It appears to be acute sepsis. The treatment is fairly straightforward, so there’s no need to worry.”
“Then begin at once.”
“Yes, Your Grace.”
Soon, a bright light flashed from Raizemon’s hands as he extended them toward Kian, as if purifying his body. I squinted against the glare and watched Kian closely.
Though Raizemon had called it simple, the healing took longer than I’d expected.
“Why is it taking so long? Your skills are pathetic. Is this why you became the King’s personal physician? For the royal family’s exclusive healer to be this slow is ridiculous.”
Raizemon was the one being scolded, so why was I the one sweating buckets?
Sikar berated Raizemon for the slow treatment, but Raizemon showed no sign of being rattled—likely because he’d heard enough of Sikar’s complaints to be used to them by now.
“The treatment is complete. He should be fine now.”
“So he’ll wake up soon?”
“Yes. His consciousness should return shortly. However, this child…”
“What about him?”
“Ah—nothing.”
“If Gillian asks whether you’ve healed anyone, tell him the truth.”
“Pardon?”
“If you say you treated a child, he’ll ask what the child looked like. Then confess you saved a boy with golden hair and blue eyes.”
“Yes, Your Grace.”
Gillian, who imprisoned Veronia to secure his own throne and even eliminated her husband to hunt for their son Kian…
Gillian was likely scouring the land right now, eyes blazing, searching for a golden-haired, blue-eyed boy. Sikar surely knew this—so what was he thinking?
At least Kian would wake up soon—that was a relief.
Long after Raizemon had left, Sikar and I remained by Kian’s side just like real parents.
I stroked Kian’s forehead as he slept, wishing desperately for him to wake soon.
Thinking how hard this tiny body must have fought the high fever made my heart ache for him, and my nose stung with tears.
“You really look like his mother like that.”
True enough—Sikar should’ve felt more like a father than I did.
But he was too young to pass as a dad. Or rather, in this era, perhaps it wasn’t so impossible after all.
Just then, Kian’s eyelids fluttered, and he slowly began to open his eyes.
“Awake at last, are you?”
Kian blinked, looked at me with relief, then spotted Sikar and immediately tensed up.
Like a little wildcat, Kian tried to summon a tiny flame from his fingertips, but it was barely the size of a match flame—likely because he was still weak.
He strained to make the flame grow, but it showed no sign of expanding. Sikar let out a derisive snort.
“Don’t worry. I have no intention of doing anything to a sick little brat like you.”
Only then did Kian seem to relax, extinguishing the tiny flame with a sigh.
Gently, I stroked Kian’s head as he looked at me with weary eyes.
“Are you hungry? Shall we start with some soup?”
Kian nodded weakly, and soon Andrea arrived with the chicken soup I’d requested.
I took the tray from Andrea and handed it to Sikar.
“Now’s your chance, Sikar.”
Sikar took the tray as if he’d been waiting for it.
But then he marched stiffly toward Kian, plate in hand.
Even a robot would walk more naturally than that—he moved like a man with no joints at all until he stood right in front of Kian.
“Time to eat.”
In a blunt tone, Sikar scooped some soup and held it toward Kian’s face, twitching the corners of his mouth.
He was clearly trying to smile, but to anyone watching, it looked downright sinister.
Kian clamped his mouth shut and glared at Sikar.
Sikar, seemingly unaware why Kian was giving him that look, stared back with dull, expressionless eyes.
‘Didn’t I tell him to smile warmly while offering food? Not grin like he’s about to poison someone?’
What am I supposed to do with this politely insane man?
Was it really too much to ask Sikar to give a warm smile?
Predictably, Kian looked at me with worried eyes and asked,
“Auntie… Can’t you feed me instead?”
“Do you dislike the Duke feeding you?”
“Yes.”
“His Grace feels bad about what he said to you earlier and wants to make amends—that’s why he wants to feed you himself.”
“I don’t want to eat anything the Duke gives me.”
Kian was resolute. Pulling the blanket over his head entirely, he made it clear he wouldn’t accept anything from Sikar.
Sikar, exasperated, set the spoon back down.
“You don’t even know what an honor this is.”
There he goes again—how can someone who can’t even talk properly to adults expect to handle a child?
In a hurry, I rushed over and whispered to Sikar,
“I’ll feed him today.”
When I gave an awkward smile, Sikar handed me the plate with a ‘do as you please’ shrug and left the room.
I’d been nervous he’d start threatening to kill someone again, but luckily, he’d apparently learned something—he didn’t say a word.
“Shall we eat?”
Kian nodded and tried to reach for the spoon himself.
“Your body hasn’t fully recovered yet—I’ll feed you.”
Kian shyly lowered his head and timidly opened his mouth to accept the soup I offered. Then suddenly, as if realizing something, he looked up at me.
“Chicken soup…”
‘Yes! Exactly! This is chicken soup, Kian! Go ahead and be moved as much as you like now.’
Tears suddenly streamed down Kian’s face, overwhelmed by memories of his father.
Seeing him cry like that—after days without proper food, with barely the strength to weep—broke my heart. But I couldn’t acknowledge what he was feeling.
“Why are you crying?”
“Daddy… whenever I was sick… Daddy always made me chicken soup… Even though the taste is different, it still reminds me of him…”
After just one spoonful, Kian burst into tears, so I stopped feeding him and simply held the child.
I hadn’t given him chicken soup to make him cry, but seeing him so sad brought tears to my own eyes.
Wiping my tears away discreetly, I gently patted Kian’s back.
“I don’t know your whole story, but I wish you could forget all your sadness and just be happy…”
I’d always felt that way—it was a line spoken from the heart. Hoping my sincerity reached him, I stroked his back.
“Sniff… Thank you…”
Kian’s stomach growled as he sniffled back his tears.
After crying so much, he must be even hungrier now.
“Then shall we finish what we were eating?”
Kian nodded, and I fed him the soup. Seeing him eat so happily—it was simply adorable.
Children really are angelic beings.
Kian enjoyed the soup, but seeing his frail body made my heart ache.
“Once you recover a bit more, we’ll have some delicious dessert too.”
Kian, who’d been eating the soup well, suddenly grew somber and closed his mouth.
“Auntie…”
His expression looked terribly serious. With eyes full of sorrow, he asked me,
“Once I finish this and fully recover… I’ll have to leave this house, won’t I? You’ll send me away when I’m all better, right?”
“No, why would you say that?”
“I overheard maids talking in my sleep—they said I’d have to leave once I’m fully healed…”
The maids probably never imagined we’d adopt Kian, so they spoke carelessly.
‘I’ll have to make sure the maids never say things like that again.’
“No. You can stay as long as you want.”
“Really?”
‘Of course—you see, we’re going to adopt you.’

However, if I were to comment sincerely, I feel like the “villain” isn’t really oblivious as he shows. I think it’s like “A drowning man clutching at a straw”.I’m enjoying this so far. I’m curious how Sikar will change towards her once he starts to fall in love. I’m also curious about what other embarrassing memories he’s going to pull out of her! 😅😂
