“You—how old are Kite and I to have old people’s ears?”

“Senhui told me. Hearing is vastly different between teens and twenties. If neither of us heard it, that theory must be right. Huh? She’s standing there blankly again. Why’s she acting like that?”

The three of them stopped walking briefly and stared at Ruela Romnin, who was once again standing dazed.

Hazen muttered in a serious tone.

“Surely she hasn’t been shocked by being driven out?”

Her incomprehensible behavior was starting to worry him.

“Look, she’s squatting down and digging up grass again. Wait—she’s bare-handed! This is way too suspicious.”

Kite couldn’t help but agree with Hazen.

He watched Ruela’s utterly baffling actions and murmured worriedly.

“She has no map, yet shows no sign of being lost. She dug up grass but neither holds onto it nor throws it away. What on earth is going on?”

Hazen slowly stepped backward.

“Could she be seeing things? The woman walking ahead—is she really Ruela Romnin? It’s not a ghost or something, is it?”

“Don’t talk nonsense.”

Meanwhile, unaware that two men and a boy were seriously discussing her, Ruela grumbled as she stared at her game screen.

“There’s barely enough coil grass—it’s nowhere near enough.”

Thanks to briefly resting by the stream—washing her face and soaking her feet—her fatigue had completely vanished.

As she walked toward the capital, she was raising her proficiency in herbs and alchemy.

In the original game, players could learn one specialized skill each at levels 10 and 40.

But shortly after leaving Kamun Village, a notification chimed. When she checked, she saw that specialized skills had already been acquired.

Cooking and alchemy.

Ruela wasn’t even level 10 yet—she was still level 1. Moreover, these were skills that should’ve required learning from a specialist, yet they’d been acquired automatically.

Wondering if anything else had changed, she carefully examined her game screen and found a blank page labeled “Bulletin Board” had been created.

This hadn’t existed in the game she’d played back in her original world.

As more similarities mixed with differences kept appearing, she gradually grew uneasy. She was anxious but needed to calm herself—worrying wouldn’t solve anything.

It seemed that because this was the real world, connections to real life were causing various discrepancies.

Having soothed herself as best she could, Ruela decided to accept the situation.

Her game screen functioned as a treasure vault. If anything new appeared there, it would surely be helpful—it couldn’t possibly be a bad thing.

Besides, though she hadn’t chosen it herself, alchemy was one of the better skills, so she had no major complaints.

If it had been a bothersome skill—like one requiring lots of materials or actually fishing—she’d have been furious. Though even then, getting angry wouldn’t change anything.

She suddenly grew curious.

Since this was a game world, the locals must also learn skills—but did they, like her, have no choice and only receive predetermined ones?

In any case, she surely wasn’t the only one with alchemy. To gain even a slight advantage, she needed to raise her skill level quickly.

Fortunately, she possessed a perfect map showing the locations of all herbs.

She was starting to like this situation more and more. A treasure map that didn’t even require carrying a bag! She could survive—and even become wealthy—without ever needing to join a suspicious guild.

The capital’s citizens had never seen her before, so they wouldn’t recognize her. She could hide among the crowd, save up money, then leave for another country—Balder wouldn’t be able to do a thing.

Thinking of her brilliantly bright future, a tune naturally escaped her lips.

Ruela began walking briskly again toward the capital, which was now close at hand.

The capital Moel was darker and gloomier than she’d imagined.

Though the buildings and scenery were clearly the same as in the game, it felt uniquely oppressive—likely due to the weary faces of the people and the harsh street atmosphere.

The lifeless, exhaustion-worn appearances of the citizens—something she’d never noticed while playing the game—brought her down just by looking at them.

She briefly wondered if coming to the capital had been a mistake, but since she hadn’t visited anywhere else, there was no guarantee another place would be better.

As she wandered the streets, she recalled the words of the man she’d met three days ago.

“This country is so afraid of Balder that no one even dares think about forming a guild.”

He’d said forming even a single guild here was difficult. Judging by Balder Gilma’s proclamation against her, that claim seemed more than justified.

The decree banned her from using any facility operated by guilds, labeling her a target of hostile action. Such an order could only exist if he assumed everyone would obey him without question.

Putting it all together, the Kingdom of Kuran seemed ruled like a dictatorship—its royal family monopolizing and suppressing all market economies.

In the original game too, citizens’ lives varied depending on the lord governing their village.

When a corrupt guild took control, ordinary players inevitably suffered.

If the lord set absurdly high taxes, prices for hunting supplies would rise, and factions might even monopolize hunting grounds needed for essential resources—making everything unbearably difficult.

Thus, new guilds inevitably formed to escape such tyranny, and rebellion became an expected outcome.

Guild wars to seize a lord’s position were the game’s biggest content feature. So it seemed the Kuran royal family was preventing threats by pressuring others—no, by forbidding anyone not under their control—from forming new guilds.

She looked around at the people once more.

In the game, every player could choose a class like tank, damage dealer, or healer. These shopkeepers surely had their own classes too—she wondered when they went hunting.

“Could it be that one guild monopolizes everything, so there are no guild wars?”

If so, there’d be no need to struggle for expensive items or materials through hunting, nor any reason to upgrade weapons or armor.

“This is troublesome.”

Muttering discontentedly, she scanned her surroundings again.

Potions made through alchemy sold well only when people frequently engaged in war or hunting.

She’d worked hard to raise her alchemy to intermediate level on the way here—but it might all be useless.

The reality she refused to believe filled her with despair.

She was currently in the bustling downtown district of the capital. Though she’d visited this place often in the game, something felt off.

Ruela examined the signboard at the entrance. It displayed a simple map to help newcomers navigate easily, along with notes on what each shop sold.

The area was neatly divided by lines: a fashion district with tailors and hat shops, a food and beverage district packed with restaurants and cafes, and an entertainment district filled with theaters—all occupying large sections.

Additionally, a general goods street, financial district, and guild district were clearly marked in an orderly fashion, making them easy to find without getting lost.

“But where’s the alchemy shop?”

To check how much her potions were worth, she’d have to visit one herself. Yet the signboard showed no indication of such a shop.

Even if potions weren’t crucial due to the absence of guild wars, it was strange that there wasn’t a single herb shop or alchemy store.

Assuming it was simply omitted from the map, Ruela headed toward the old town to find an alchemy shop herself.

“I’m hungry.”

The savory scent of bread made her feet stop of their own accord. After nearly three days of near-starvation, she was easily tempted.

Ruela hesitated briefly, then approached the bakery. Since no one was chasing her, she decided to buy a loaf first and look for the alchemy shop at her leisure.

She picked up a plump, snow-white loaf from those displayed outside the shop.

“How much is this?”

The baker came out and stared at her intently.

“I asked how much.”

“Show me your kingdom ID.”

The owner replied curtly.

“My kingdom ID?”

She didn’t have one. Even if she had, she’d been driven out with nothing but a cloak, so there was no way she’d possess it.

“Why would I need that just to buy a loaf of bread?”

She raised her voice first. Even if this country seemed like a dictatorship, it was odd to demand a kingdom ID for every purchase.

“What do you expect? Orders came down—I can’t help it. Show your ID and buy, or leave—I won’t sell to you.”

At the owner’s words, she looked around again. Only then did she notice what she’d missed earlier: everyone was showing something to buy goods.

She hadn’t anticipated this situation at all, and her face twisted in dismay. The baker, watching Ruela, narrowed his eyes suspiciously.
