It was strange.

Normally, she wouldn’t wait all the way to the front lines, but she’d usually watch from outside until he returned.

She often stayed in the fields, but there were no fields of hers here.

When he told her to stay at Ferdan Fortress because it could be dangerous, he’d secretly been happy when she insisted on following him down anyway.

He didn’t want to put her in danger, yet he didn’t want to be apart from her either—that strange, conflicting feeling made Aidan finally give in.

‘I thought we’d grown closer…’

When he glanced around casually, she was nowhere to be seen, so he assumed she must be in the tent. She’d looked quite exhausted during their move, so she was probably asleep.

The battle had ended sooner than expected, so she likely hadn’t anticipated he’d return this quickly.

She wasn’t exactly lazy, but she did sleep a lot. Then again, with that thin, delicate frame of hers, she probably needed extra energy just to move around.

‘Honestly, her stamina is terrible.’

Aidan recalled the moment he’d held her in his arms—the slender back where bones were easily felt, the pronounced collarbones and ribs casting sharp shadows.

‘When we get back, I’ll have to feed her well. Once we win the war, the food shortage should be resolved too.’

He was startled to realize he’d been dwelling on that sensation and felt shame at his own impropriety. Shaking his head, he pushed the thought aside.

Aidan liked seeing her sleep in his tent like a sprawled-out hamster. Watching her filled him with warmth and made this place feel more human, reminding him that he was still doing human work.

He headed toward the tent with familiar steps.

“Your Grace!”

Just then, a soldier approached and relayed a message from Chief of Staff River.

“You should probably come quickly. The prisoner is causing a commotion…”

“Didn’t I say to treat him well? He’s a valuable hostage.”

“Yes, it’s not about how we’re treating him. He’s just shouting at the top of his lungs, demanding someone be brought out immediately and insisting you come yourself.”

Aidan sighed, recalling the face of the prisoner—‘Duke Jax McCarthy.’ For someone who looked so refined, what was all this fuss about?

He turned and headed toward the tent where Jax was being held.

The guards stationed outside parted to let the Grand Duke pass.

“What’s going on?”

“The prisoner is asking for a woman. He keeps yelling something about ‘Brody’ or whatever—says to release that poor girl.”

Chief of Staff River answered cynically, arms crossed.

“Brody?”

“She must be quite the courtesan if even as a prisoner he’s looking for her.”

“How dare you!”

Jax roared in response to River’s sarcasm.

His voice was so powerful—from his expert diaphragmatic breathing—it felt as though the air itself shook the tent.

Aidan frowned, and River, as if expecting it, clapped his hands over his ears.

“Is there a woman among the prisoners named Brody?”

“Hmm. Mrs. Murphy handles the registry of female captives. I asked her, and she shook her head.”

“She might have changed her name.”

River shrugged with his arms still crossed—a gesture clearly saying, “Then how are we supposed to find her?”

“You didn’t kill her, did you?!”

Jax’s thunderous shout rattled the tent once again.

Honestly, why did he have to shout like that when speaking normally would suffice? River clicked his tongue with an utterly disgusted look.

“We can’t identify the woman you’re referring to. If you provide more details—her reason for importance, distinguishing traits—then perhaps we’ll decide whether it’s worth the effort.”

“Damn it.”

At Aidan’s blunt remark, Jax dramatically contorted in anguish. Aidan seriously wondered if the man lived as if he were alone on a theatrical stage.

Though River looked thoroughly repulsed, Aidan patiently waited.

After what he deemed sufficient time for dramatics, Jax finally hunched over and muttered something under his breath—like a theatrical soliloquy.

Though spoken very quietly, Aidan, blessed by the spirits, heard every word clearly.

[Did your assassination fail, Brody? I should’ve stopped you.]

Aidan was startled.

But as expected, no one else seemed to have heard; River merely wore an annoyed expression.

“Why do you want this woman, esteemed prisoner? We humble servants need a proper reason before making any decisions.”

River delivered the sarcasm in a perfectly polite tone.

Either Jax didn’t catch the sarcasm or chose to ignore it, continuing without anger.

He looked like a man writhing in guilt over losing a woman.

“That woman is utterly precious to me. Though I foolishly let her go due to a moment’s mistake, if she returns, I swear no one will treat her better than I will.”

Ugh… Who even asked for that?

River’s lips twisted coldly.

Completely absorbed in his own sentimentality, Jax kept talking.

“Her Imperial Highness the Princess holds that girl very dear as well. If we return her together, you’ll surely receive great commendation.”

Commendation? From a royal family that just lost a war? It was absurd—but River had to admit those were the first remotely tempting words Jax had spoken.

“So… you’re saying she has value as a hostage?”

“Exactly.”

Seeing River show interest, Jax looked oddly pleased.

“Then we humble servants shall exert ourselves to fulfill your request. Could you provide more clues besides her name? Perhaps her appearance…?”

“Her name is Brody. She has soft brown hair like milk chocolate and stunning green eyes that sparkle like emeralds.”

At his description, Aidan and River both thought of the same person—but Aidan frowned while River shook his head.

‘Based on that alone, it sounds like Bri…’

‘It can’t be her. She’d be embarrassed to hear such flowery praise.’

River replied,

“With just those details, she’ll be impossible to find. Northern lands are filled with such beauties. Ah, of course, I don’t doubt your lady is absolutely unique—but do you have any other clues?”

“She’s average height… and her figure is… ordinary. Oh, and her skin is somewhat fair.”

If everything about her is ordinary, what are we supposed to go on? And using skin tone—which varies with circumstances—as a clue? Was he completely clueless?

Just as River was about to snap back, Jax hesitantly opened his mouth again.

“…And she possesses extensive knowledge of plants.”

Why didn’t you say that first?! River scowled, but the next moment, he realized the significance of those words and was genuinely shocked. He glanced at Aidan and saw an equally stunned expression.

Once again, both men thought of the same person.

But this time, neither nodded nor tilted their heads in confirmation.

They just stood frozen in place.

“Bri…?”

“No, what did you say? Brody! Ah, that poor woman—willing to sacrifice herself for love! I am truly a man burdened with sin.”

Aidan felt as if he’d been struck on the head with a hammer.

Was he even on a battlefield right now?

He’d never felt so utterly dazed in his life.

“Your Grace! Urgent news!”

Before he could process what was happening, a soldier rushed into the tent.

“You need to go down to the plains! The Imperial Court… the Imperial Court seeks to negotiate…”

They wanted to negotiate already—before tomorrow’s battle even began? Were they surrendering so easily?

With conflicted feelings, Aidan turned toward the tent’s exit.

“Ohhh, Your Imperial Highness! You haven’t abandoned me after all!”

The booming voice of that golden idiot from behind made Aidan’s nerves stand on edge.

Suspicious that this was a psychological ploy, Aidan and River gave strict orders to guard the prisoner closely before heading to the battlefield.

[This is the timeline separator]

The plain looked desolate beneath the sunset and dark storm clouds.

Grand Duke Icewall stood aligned with several knights at a safe distance beyond arrow range from the walls, gazing up at the woman atop the ramparts.

Dressed in luxurious garments, she proudly displayed her golden hair blazing under the chaotic sunset sky.

“Show proper respect to Her Imperial Highness Princess Myra of the Riley Imperial Family!”

The herald beside the princess shouted loudly.

Grand Duke Icewall remained slouched, arms crossed, and merely gave a curt nod in greeting.

“How insolent!”

The herald snapped in anger.

“Courtesy is shown only to those worthy of respect. Loyalty is given only to those worthy of it.”

Aidan spoke coldly.

As the herald tried to retort, the princess raised her hand to silence him.

She spoke calmly and gracefully, yet her voice resonated clearly across the plain—

apparently amplified by an artifact left over from the era of ancient magic, now lost to time.

“His Majesty has acknowledged his misrule. But do you truly intend to claim this outrageous rebellion is thereby justified?”

Misrule? Was it really something so simply put?

If he could, Aidan wanted to grab the Emperor by the hair, drag him to the North, and force him to witness what corpses looked like after starving to death.

The North’s despair had driven even the normally composed and principled Aidan to such thoughts.

“Whether it’s justified or not is for you to decide. But I didn’t come down here to hear meaningless words like that.”

The princess furrowed her brow but maintained her dignity.

She quickly masked her frown and continued with an expressionless face.

Raising a graceful hand, she signaled the soldiers lined up behind her on the wall. They hoisted something—or rather, someone—into view.

A sharp-eyed soldier cried out,

“It’s the Village Chief of Lanying!”

“Oh… my son, conscripted five years ago, is there too!”

“That’s Mrs. Lizzie from next door!”

Among the Northern soldiers who recognized them, an uproar broke out.

Aidan paled and scanned the walls.

“If you refuse my terms, I will execute them.”

The princess’s calm voice descended effectively over the murmuring crowd.

Seeing the surroundings fall silent, she stepped forward one pace and opened her mouth.

“Grand Duke Aidan of the North, heed the command of His Imperial Majesty!”

“You talk like you still have an emperor!”

It wasn’t Grand Duke Icewall who interrupted—but a voice from the ramparts.

“Your Grace! There’s no need to listen. Even if we return to the North, do you think we’d survive? Starvation is the only choice left! This old man won’t let them steal the future of our Northern people!”

The Village Chief of Lanying, his face marked by deep wrinkles and scars, twisted his body free from the soldier holding him.

In the blink of an eye, a tiny figure plunged from the wall, followed by a sickening thud.

The sound was small, yet in the horrific silence of the plain, it chilled everyone’s hearts.

“Your Grace! Please build a North where our children can live happily!”

An unnamed woman shouted as she threw herself off. From his position, Grand Duke Icewall clearly saw dried tear tracks on her weary face as she fell.

After her came desperate cries, screams, bodies crashing to the ground—one after another—their resolve meeting the earth in a chorus of horror.

Soldiers turned away or shut their eyes, but Grand Duke Aidan stood firm, staring straight ahead, eyes bloodshot, his clenched fists trembling with bulging veins.

“Stooop!!”

Suddenly, a single voice split the plain, echoing like thunder.

At that cry, the prisoners’ voices erupting from the ramparts fell momentarily silent, creating a brief hush. The suicides stopped.

It was the voice of a woman, blazing with intensity, that halted them.

Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away

This is also on my reread list!

This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.

Definitely worth a read, y’all!

The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.

But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.

Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.

I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.

The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.

As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
