A dim tavern.

A large man sat in the corner, drinking with his hood pulled low over his face.

‘It’s already been a week.’

He sipped his drink slowly, trying not to show his impatience.

Yet again, as night deepened, nothing happened.

His faint hope turned once more into disappointment, weighing heavily upon him.

Eventually, he left the price of his drink on the table and stepped out of the tavern.

Leaving behind the tavern’s noisy clamor and warm heat, he was greeted by the quiet murmur of the street.

The atmosphere was so peaceful it was hard to believe a war had raged here until recently.

Complaints about how hard life had become came from all directions, but at least their homes hadn’t been trampled.

Watching Medician, the wealthy imperial capital—still prosperous despite having surrendered so much grain—Aidan, Grand Duke of the North, now the North’s true master, felt bitter.

He had done everything possible over the past week, yet all he gained was that bitterness.

He left the city before the gates closed. That he could come and go using a false identity showed just how lax the Imperial Palace’s security had become.

The place he emerged from wasn’t the battlefield plain of recent days, but the city’s West Gate.

[This is the timeline separator]

The day Brody’s disappearance was discovered.

Several hours after tumbling from his horse due to a headache, Aidan regained consciousness.

He took one of the few remaining pills from his nearly empty vial and swallowed it. It eased his headache, though not as completely as when she was with him.

He knew he couldn’t shirk his responsibilities—especially not at such a critical time.

The next day, the North safely received grain from the Imperial Princess and sent Duke Jax back.

After organizing the camp and preparing the troops for their return to the North,

he handed command over to River and left the formation.

Of course, River hadn’t let him go easily.

He had used the same method as Brody—leaving behind only a note.

He had expected chaos to follow, but to his own surprise, his thoughts were drawn elsewhere with unusual intensity.

A woman with wheat-colored hair and an enigmatic aura—

everything else had blurred and faded from his mind.

‘Bri… No, Brody, was it…?’

Frowning, he pulled out the small vial hanging around his neck and clenched it in his hand.

He didn’t know why he was searching for her.

He didn’t even know what he wanted to do if he found her.

He had given her freedom through his own vow—and she had used that freedom to flee from him.

‘I cared for her. And I thought she didn’t dislike me.’

She surely couldn’t forget her homeland in an instant. But if they spent more time together like before, he believed she’d grow fond of him. Surely she’d be content if he let her live in comfort as the Grand Duke’s wife, without hardship.

But now it seemed like sheer arrogance.

‘Comfort? What kind of comfort could I possibly offer her here in the North?’

Looking back at the capital made it even clearer. If she truly was the “Brody” the Duke sought, she would receive far greater comfort beside him than anything Aidan could promise.

He recalled Bri—the bright smile she gave him under moonlight the night before the war, her worried expression, the resolute look in her eyes when she risked her life for the prisoners.

‘Was all of that merely an act to survive as a captive?’

He sat down on a nearby rock without moving farther.

He had asked the Ice Spirit, but received no answer. After all, winter hadn’t even arrived yet—there wasn’t a speck of ice to be found.

Aidan, Grand Duke Icewall blessed by the Ice Spirit, could easily gather information anywhere ice touched and wield the spirit’s powers.

That was precisely why he’d captured Brody so effortlessly the last time she fled.

‘If only we were in the North—I could find her easily. Then I could at least hear her out, maybe even convince her.’

Overwhelmed by despair at being unable to find even a trace of her, he lowered his head.

Just then—

“Hey.”

Someone approached and tapped Aidan on the shoulder.

Aidan, still hooded, turned cautiously to look at the person who had spoken.

His eyes widened.

Chapter 115 Chapter 114

This was the very person he’d been searching for—the one he’d failed to meet despite setting multiple baits.

“You said you were looking for someone?”

“…”

The man—Jax—with his broad muscles and gleaming golden hair—stood confidently as he spoke.

Aidan kept his head lowered as he replied.

“Yes. A woman with light brown hair and green eyes—the one Duke McCarthy holds dear.”

As he answered, he studied Jax closely. Honestly, he hadn’t expected the man himself—not just someone around him—to take the bait. And why had Jax chased him all the way outside the city walls?

Jax asked, “Why are you looking for her?”

“I’m running an errand. I can’t disclose further details.”

Jax tilted his head quizzically.

“You’re running an errand, yet you don’t know where she is?”

“That’s why I’m searching, isn’t it? Since you’ve chased me all the way out here, you must have useful information. Tell me—I’ll pay handsomely.”

At that, Jax exaggeratedly tilted his head the other way.

“That’s odd. You’re asking the questions I should be asking. Isn’t that right, Grand Duke Aidan?”

Aidan flinched.

At Jax’s words, he instinctively jerked backward, his hand already near his sword hilt.

“Whoa, whoa—did you forget we agreed to a truce?”

Jax shook his head, giving an exaggerated “oh dear” look.

“The truce is between the Imperial Capital and the North—not between you and me.”

Aidan replied in a flat, resolute tone.

“Honestly, you’re impossible. We might even become travel companions—ease up a bit.”

Travel companions? What nonsense—like Ice Spirits cooking vegetable stew?

Aidan stared at Jax, who was grinning broadly, feeling utterly exhausted.

Jax flashed a bright smile again and said,

“You’re searching for Brody, and I need to find Brody too—how about we cooperate?”

“Does that mean she hasn’t returned to the capital?”

“Sigh… poor Brody. She must be hiding because she couldn’t bear to face me—after failing her mission,

and,” Jax paused briefly to glare at Aidan before continuing,

“apparently becoming someone so important to the North that the Grand Duke himself is out searching for her?”

Aidan bit his lip.

So that’s why she hasn’t returned to the capital.

I took away even the place where she belonged.

Whether or not Jax understood Aidan’s inner turmoil, he kept talking—as if lost in his own thoughts, barely noticing Aidan at all.

“And given how important she’s become, it seems she wasn’t treated well. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have run off so quickly.”

Aidan was grateful he still wore his hood—it felt as though Jax’s words had struck bone.

He gathered himself and said dryly,

“If even you don’t know her whereabouts, there’s no reason for me to stay. Let’s each go our own way.”

“Ah.”

Aidan mounted his black steed, Black Horse Kais, and turned northward.

But Jax immediately stuck close to his side as he tried to leave.

“You really think she went to the North? Hmm…”

Aidan ignored him and spurred his horse forward, but Jax stubbornly followed.

“She wouldn’t have gone to the North.”

“Why do you think that?”

Aidan, who had intended to ignore him completely, finally relented, wondering if Jax had a clue. Jax, delighted by the response, eagerly answered.

“She wouldn’t like the North.”

“…”

Those words stabbed Aidan’s heart again.

In truth, Jax’s reasoning wasn’t meant to hurt Aidan.

Jax knew Brody was a “Plant Mage,” so he assumed she wouldn’t willingly flee to the North, where plants offered little aid.

But Aidan had no way of knowing that.

‘Right—if she was running from me, she wouldn’t have gone to the North.’

Thinking it would be hard to slip past Verdant Fortress without a trace, he’d already dispatched swift messengers to check whether she’d passed through—and ordered her detained if she hadn’t. He’d soon have an answer.

‘If not the North or the capital, there’s only one possibility.’

“The South.”

“You should look into the South, shouldn’t you?”

Irritated that his thoughts aligned with Jax’s, Aidan turned his horse and spurred it forward.

Thus, Aidan’s black steed and Jax’s white horse began galloping southward.

[This is the timeline separator]

“Ah, the sunlight is wonderful!”

Brody smiled, reaching out to catch the bright rays filtering sharply through lush tree leaves.

She sat atop a brown horse whose color matched her own hair.

Didn’t she say she couldn’t ride?

Well, Do Yeon couldn’t.

But Brody could.

Though her soul had once been Do Yeon’s, she’d never actually ridden a horse herself—and riding alone had frightened her, so she claimed she couldn’t.

But during the journey to the capital, she’d ridden for a long time seated in front of Aidan—and gradually grew accustomed to being on horseback, until her fear vanished.

Once her fear disappeared, the rest came naturally to Brody’s body.

‘The first time I rode alone, my back felt terribly empty.’

Brody flinched as the memory of that solid presence behind her reflexively surfaced.

It must have been memorable—her first ride as the possessed Brody had been with him.

‘That’s the scary power of sensory memory.’

She shook her head vigorously to clear her thoughts.

‘The war… Has it ended? He must be safe—he clearly had the upper hand…’

Yet the thoughts kept returning.

‘It’s just curiosity. Perfectly normal to be curious, right?’

Brody deliberately avoided asking passersby about the war—not only to avoid being tracked, but also because she assumed news couldn’t reach her faster than she could travel.

After all, there were no texts, phones, or emails here.

She had escaped quite successfully.

When she first left the camp, she’d had nothing.

She went to the nearest village and traded fresh fruits and crops—of her own making—for a horse.

Desperate to put as much distance as possible between herself and the camp, she rode day and night.

Except for brief pauses to feed and rest her horse, she never stopped.

She could supply her own food, and when sleeping, she’d wrap herself tightly in vines atop the horse for a light doze.

After riding so relentlessly, she was now far from the capital.

Noticing how the surrounding climate and vegetation had clearly changed, she finally headed toward a village.

A place where scorching sun and humid air nurtured plants like a paradise.

Brody had come down to the South.

Male lead is a Love-Obsessed Merman

When he discovers she has gone, he risks everything to pursue her on land, enduring agonizing pain to transform his tail into human legs…

One-line summary: Male lead chases female lead. The male lead’s love is a bit sick, an invincible love brain.

Synopsis

During a voyage at sea, Jiang Yang accidentally captures a merman.

Servant: I heard that mermen are fierce and brutal.

Jiang Yang looks at the merman obediently rubbing her palm like a puppy: “You call this fierce and brutal?”

Servant: I heard that mermen have no human nature.

Jiang Yang looks at the merman with wet puppy eyes, obsessively calling her ‘A Yang’ like a childish infant: “You call this having no human nature?”

With great difficulty, she releases the merman back into the sea and returns to shore.

Who would have thought that in less than half a month, the merman, who should have been freely wandering in the South China Sea, would shed his scales, endure the pain of losing his tail, transform into human legs, and come ashore to find her?

He kneels at her feet, rubbing her palm, with merman tears rolling down: “A Yang, don’t abandon me.”
