The Extra's Role is Too My Taste (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 11
The day he returned from the battlefield, he nagged as though he’d received absolution.
She, too, felt relieved that he had come back alive and unharmed, and her heart softened.
After all, Brody had not wished for Aidan’s death just because she wanted freedom.
It was quickly decided to move the Grand Duke’s main camp southward, and Aidan asked Brody to come along with him.
Brody silently nodded.
“Are you all right?”
“Hm?”
“I mean… your body.”
Worried about last night, Aidan asked carefully.
“Do you really think you’re all right?”
Brody replied as if scolding him, and Aidan’s face turned red. At that, Brody gave a small, knowing chuckle.
His reaction was amusing, but she shouldn’t tease him too much.
Brody changed the subject.
“Your Highness, since I developed the potato variety, please try not to let it leak outside. Oh, and kohlrabi too—that one was bred to grow quickly.”
“I see. I’ll issue instructions accordingly.”
“Yes. Of course, after a long time, it’ll inevitably spread everywhere. But for now, using it for business could greatly help the North.”
“Hmm… what if you took charge of this yourself and pushed it forward?”
Brody smiled faintly, pausing briefly before answering.
“How could I possibly handle such a difficult task? Chief of Staff River would be shocked.”
“River may grumble, but I suspect he’s already accepted you.”
“No way.”
Brody refused.
Yet Aidan ultimately believed she would take on the task and succeed.
Soon after, the Grand Duke’s party packed their belongings.
The current encampment left behind a few soldiers and prisoners to maintain the fields. The remaining soldiers were mostly those injured or who had formed attachments with the prisoners.
They would become the foundation for settling here and building a new home.
Though the final great battle—facing the Imperial Army—was drawing near, Aidan felt strangely untroubled.
He simply felt certain they would win.
As if sensing Aidan’s confidence, Brody smiled when their eyes met.
“Don’t you know how to ride a horse?”
River asked Brody with a smirk.
Brody felt embarrassed admitting she couldn’t ride, and for some reason, he looked extremely pleased.
‘People really are consistently petty.’
Brody walked proudly to the back of the supply wagon and sat down on the edge. The soldier driving the cart chuckled at the sight—his smile warm and welcoming.
After returning the soldier’s smile, Brody replied casually to River.
“Is being bad at horseback riding really that big a deal? Not acting human is far worse.”
At her retort, River’s brow twitched.
Even the soldiers who had disliked Brody had changed their minds after seeing what she’d accomplished—though even that didn’t sit particularly well with Brody—but River still hadn’t said a single word of thanks or apology.
‘He picks fights with me more than anyone else.’
Brody’s response had been a pointed jab at exactly that attitude.
River, catching the hidden barb in her words, shot back sarcastically.
“I didn’t realize you were so desperate for approval.”
“I didn’t realize you were so full of jealousy.”
At that, River involuntarily raised his voice.
“Jealous? Of you?”
“Just to be sure—surely you’re not unaware that you’re unusually emotional toward me?”
Her nonchalant reply versus his flustered reaction—the winner was obvious.
When Brody looked at him with a lazy expression, River snorted and turned his horse away.
“Won’t this be tough if you keep going like this? The road’s quite long.”
Aidan, watching Brody seated at the back of the wagon, spoke with concern.
Trending
He rode atop Kais, a massive black stallion of exceptional build and gleaming coat.
“I’ll be fine. I’ll sit here for a while, then maybe over by the driver.”
Sit next to a strange man?
At her words, Aidan frowned slightly, and the driver broke into a cold sweat.
But Brody had no concept of “strange man(?)” and felt absolutely nothing inappropriate about it.
Brody lightly thumped the wagon and called out cheerfully.
“Alright, let’s go!”
After glancing nervously at the Grand Duke, the driver finally started the wagon under Brody’s expectant gaze.
The journey turned out to be far rougher than expected.
The violently jolting wagon threatened to break her tailbone.
‘Oh no, my pelvis!’
It was just as bad when she sat beside the driver.
Each time the wagon lurched heavily, Brody grabbed the driver’s arm; and each time, the driver was torn between controlling the wagon and watching the Grand Duke’s reaction.
Finally, after a wheel hit a large rock and Brody, seated at the back, was flung forward and crashed face-first onto the ground, they adopted a new arrangement.
Aidan chuckled inwardly and lifted Brody onto the horse in front of him.
Atop the tall horse, she was frightened at first—but only briefly. As her stamina waned, she suffered terribly from motion sickness.
Aidan was anxious, but there was nothing he could do about someone else’s travel sickness.
“I think I’ll just pass out and wake up later. Is that alright?”
Brody simply took some medicine and fell asleep.
She curled up like a squirrel and nestled snugly into Aidan’s arms, fast asleep.
Aidan gathered his cloak forward to form a little cave around her and held her tightly with his strong arms to keep her from falling.
Though he was sturdy, maintaining constant arm strength while atop a horse was no easy task.
Yet Aidan looked down contentedly at Brody, sleeping peacefully against his chest.
[This is the timeline separator]“Bree? ……Bree?”
She opened her eyes in darkness at the sound of her name, returning to the bright world of reality.
Still drowsy from the lingering effects of the medicine, Brody lifted her head—and nearly headbutted Aidan’s chin.
Aidan easily dodged the movement and looked down at Brody, who blinked up at him.
“Oww…”
Brody carefully stretched out one leg at a time, as if her tightly bent knees had gone numb.
Aidan supported her to keep her from falling and helped her achieve her goal—
by holding her ankles steady.
His soldiers, who had only just grown accustomed to the unfamiliar sight of their Grand Duke carrying Brody while marching, were once again astonished by this tender display.
Until now, they had only ever seen him as a man of few words, imposing dignity, and ruthless efficiency on the battlefield.
With both legs now extended, Brody grabbed Aidan’s arm with one hand and rubbed her eyes with the other as she asked,
“Are we there yet?”
“Almost?”
“Almost…?”
Brody replied in a tone that clearly meant, “Why did you wake me up so soon?”
Aidan grinned and pointed ahead with a tilt of his chin.
Seated beside him, Brody turned to look where he indicated.
“Wow…”
There stood a massive fortress.
Built between two rugged mountains, it enjoyed natural defenses on both sides, truly worthy of being called a natural stronghold.
The fortress walls were entirely white, since bricks fired from the local soil here naturally took on a white hue.
The sun was setting to their right as they headed south, and the blazing sunset behind them at an angle bathed the white fortress in stunning shades of pink and orange.
“Woooow…”
Brody could only keep exclaiming in awe, unable to form proper words.
“It’s amazing.”
“Hmm, isn’t it? I timed our arrival deliberately for sunset.”

“Really? Oh—well, that’s nice, but Your Grace…”
“Hmm?”
“How did you manage to capture this fortress?”
Now she understood why the people of the South hadn’t fortified more heavily. Who could have imagined this fortress would ever fall?
Now that it was theirs, the enemy would surely feel the same shock.
The Grand Duke chuckled softly at Brody’s odd point of fascination.
‘She’s truly unpredictable.’
Though Brody had expressed amazement at the fortress itself, she also seemed enchanted by the scenery—constantly craning her neck to look around.
Feeling proud, Aidan urged his horse forward confidently, and the horse, as if sensing its master’s mood, strutted forth with elegant flair.
[This is the timeline separator]After entering the fortress, they spent a few days reorganizing and planning their advance toward the Imperial Capital.
The final battle would take place on Gori Plains, just outside the capital’s outer walls.
As they moved southward, the climate grew warmer. Vegetation changed drastically past the fortress, making it feel like a different world from the North.
In the villages they’d occupied, fertile soil bore lush crops that welcomed them.
People who had struggled between life and death amid the North’s desolation didn’t rejoice at the South’s abundance—they wept.
They now deeply understood just how the Imperial Court had treated the North.
In any case, their supply lines had shortened significantly, as provisions could now be sourced directly from the region.
Aidan’s army pressed southward with unstoppable momentum.
On a distant hill where the Imperial Capital came into view, the army of Grand Duke Icewall formed their ranks.
Below the hill lay Gori Plains, and at the far end of the plains stood the capital’s walls, surrounded by a moat.
The city appeared peaceful, but its walls didn’t seem suited for battle.
Having requested permission from the Grand Duke, Brody rode with Aidan up the hill overlooking the enemy, and she examined their banners.
She could identify the Imperial Army’s crest—and the crest of Duke Nicholson’s forces.
‘So Jax will be coming out.’
Jax was the original story’s male lead.
Brody frowned as she recognized the crest.
Aidan, however, was more concerned about “Brody’s thoughts”—which, he knew, had originally placed the enemy closer to the capital.
Since this was her hometown… he assumed she couldn’t possibly feel good about it.
“Is there anything you’d like me to ensure regarding your hometown? Family, perhaps…?”
He asked, ready to protect any place or person she held dear.
“No.”
But Brody replied sharply.
‘Come to think of it, I don’t really know much about her at all.’
Though surprised by her blunt answer, Aidan held back further questions; it felt awkward to pry just before marching into her hometown for battle.
‘I’ll ask her after the war ends.’
[This is the timeline separator]“Have a safe trip.”
Perhaps because the final battle loomed so close,
Brody, unlike usual, came all the way to the soldiers’ area to bid the Grand Duke farewell.
Aidan nodded in reply, spurred his horse, and turned it around.
The battle began shortly after.
Duke Jax McCarthy’s forces emerged before the main Imperial army.
Behind tightly ordered ranks stood Duke Jax himself, magnificent with his golden hair streaming in the wind.
His army boasted dazzling top-tier weapons and armor. Their formation was impeccable, their movements grand and splendid.
It was clearly an army composed of noble elites and knights who’d graduated as top students from Imperial academies.
Yet these model soldiers struggled against hardened veterans who’d survived countless life-or-death battles.
At first startled by Duke McCarthy’s imposing presence, Grand Duke Icewall’s troops quickly regained composure after exchanging a few clashes.
They realized, to their own surprise, just how capable they truly were.
From that moment, the tide turned.
When Duke McCarthy’s army found itself surrounded and on the brink of annihilation, Duke Jax of House McCarthy bellowed a challenge to Grand Duke Icewall Aidan, demanding single combat.

Chief of Staff River tried to dissuade him, but Aidan accepted the duel without so much as a flicker of his eyebrows—and defeated Jax in fewer than ten exchanges.
Thus, the golden-haired Duke Jax became Grand Duke Icewall Aidan’s prisoner.
The first day’s fighting ended there.
Having shattered the capital’s so-called premier army—Duke McCarthy’s forces—the rest was now merely a matter of time.
Aidan returned to camp with majestic dignity.
With a fluttering heart, he scanned the encampment, hoping Brody might have come out to greet him.
But she was nowhere to be seen.
Inside the Grand Duke’s tent,
on a table devoid of human warmth, only a small medicine bottle and a brief note awaited him.
