The Imperial Academy entrance exam was held at the Academy’s annex building within the capital city. The main Academy building stood near the Imperial Palace for the convenience of the royal family, while the annex was primarily used for public events.

The Count took Misha and me there by carriage.

My face remained dry and straw-like no matter how much I washed it, whereas Misha’s skin glowed in contrast.

I briefly wondered if she’d received a massage yesterday too—but of course she had; seeing the line of luxurious carriages parked before the exam hall made that obvious.

When I intended to do something wrong, my words naturally dried up. I stepped down from the carriage with a stiff expression and simply stood beside her while Misha coquettishly told the Count, “I’ll definitely come back as number one!”

The scene among the examinees was much the same everywhere. Some noble families appeared solemn, while others were boisterously cheering on their candidates.

Among them, my gaze drifted blankly toward a spot where a large crowd had gathered. My eyes were drawn there involuntarily because many sword-wearing men stood around.

The luxurious carriage bearing the crest of a fire-breathing eagle belonged to the Kaidel Dukedom. So someone from the Kaidel household was taking the exam today as well. Though I didn’t recognize noble faces, I had memorized all the major Imperial family crests.

The man standing before that carriage was unmistakably Duke Kaidel, the Empire’s foremost statesman.

He had a robust build, black hair, and a light beard trimmed along his jawline—an image that perfectly matched the phrase “distinguished middle age.”

So many people surrounded him that I couldn’t see anyone who looked like an examinee.

I turned my eyes and took in the Academy annex building at a glance. Its dull light-brown wall rose high, vaguely reminiscent of a fortress.

It was a building in the early Imperial architectural style—tightly enclosed by tall outer walls while its interior spaces were intricately and complexly arranged.

Unconsciously, I was sketching an escape route to slip away unnoticed from the Count’s sight when the assembly bell rang. Misha shot me a sidelong glance, as if asking why I wasn’t following her immediately.

She was the one who’d firmly told me not to acknowledge her outside the mansion. Of course, I preferred it that way too.

I realized Misha had absolutely no idea about the Countess’s request to me. It was heartwarming to see how fiercely the Countess protected Misha.

My own mother had treated me just like that. And because of it, I’d been happy.

Just because I was unhappy didn’t mean I should tear down someone else’s happiness. Just as being a bastard wasn’t my fault, Misha possessing more than she could possibly handle wasn’t her fault either.

Being thrown to the bottom of life had, astonishingly even to myself, made my heart remarkably broad.

I followed Misha—blissfully ignorant and happy—from a distance toward the entrance. Conveniently, a carriage was parked right where it perfectly blocked the Count’s view. If I turned direction there…

Just then, someone grabbed my shoulder. I turned around—it was the Count.

The Count merely gave a faint smile without saying a word—not even “Do well on the exam” or “Make sure you pass.”

Yet, as if compelled to respond somehow, I automatically nodded toward him and walked beneath the heavy-looking lintel.

And then I stopped abruptly.

Inside the deep brown brick wall, dense spaces spread out like a spiderweb around a grand central hall. Only from within those towering fences could one take in the building’s full layout.

At first glance, it seemed chaotic and crowded, but with just a little focus, the intricate and beautiful decorations appeared to draw people inward.

The building’s deliberate lack of openness—despite being designated for external events—carried an air of arrogance: the unspoken assumption that not just anyone could enter.

I knew I would never forget the sight of this venerable building for the rest of my life. This place represented the closest glory this bastard Rorisha could ever hope to approach.

Suddenly sensing a gaze, I looked up to see Misha staring directly at me from across the way. That proud and elegant bearing was something she’d been trained in since birth. Strangely, she looked unfamiliar to me now.

Reflexively, I stepped back a few paces and hid myself among the other examinees.

As I walked through the crowd of examinees, I recalled several faces once more—Mother, the Count, the Countess…

The doors remained wide open for examinees still entering. I had to leave now.

I spent the afternoon at the herbalist’s shop. When I told the herbalist’s grandfather I’d be coming often from now on, he beamed with joy, his mouth splitting into a wide grin.

I pointed out some herbs the clerks had stored improperly and even persuaded customers to buy extra bundles of herbs they hadn’t planned to purchase.

I’d always thought I’d become a private tutor like Miss Julia, but reconsidering, it wouldn’t be bad to formally learn the trade here and open my own shop when I grew older.

Since the herbalist’s grandfather said his son only knew how to spend money and was otherwise useless, I figured there might be room for me to squeeze in—if I worked hard enough.

By late afternoon, carriages suddenly multiplied on the streets—all the examinees who’d taken the Imperial Academy entrance exam were returning home en masse.

Watching them made my chest feel tight.

My original plan had been to sneak out of the exam hall around noon and return just in time for when the exam ended.

But after coming to the herbalist’s shop to kill time, I now absolutely refused to go back—neither to the exam hall nor to the Count’s mansion.

“If I were me, I wouldn’t feed a kid like me.”

When I muttered this, the herbalist’s grandfather called out, “What was that?”

“Oh, nothing! I was just thinking I should probably head back now.”

“Right, right. Come again tomorrow.”

“I’ll come again. Not sure if it’ll be tomorrow, though.”

I trudged back toward the Count’s mansion. My feet dragged heavily, but I worried the Countess might react sensitively if I seemed to have run away.

Now I had only one hope left. As I shuffled along, I muttered firmly to myself,

“Misha. At least you pass.”

When I returned to the Count’s mansion after sunset, the Count came to my room but didn’t ask anything upon seeing my expression.

Instead, I asked him,

“Did Misha do well?”

“The past exam questions her tutors taught her appeared quite often, apparently.”

“That’s good to hear. Congratulations, Count.”

In the Empire, not all nobles were equal. Even among nobles, one’s status was divided by whether they graduated from the Academy or not.

The Academy granted both honor and connections; it was common there to forge lifelong bonds of loyalty with the royal family. Marital alliances went without saying.

Of course, this also upheld the Count’s dignity.

So indeed, it was worth celebrating.

“…Rest.”

The Count said only that and left. Instead, Teria told me to let her know if there was anything I wanted to eat.

But I had no appetite whatsoever. I drank only water and ate a single slice of bread before falling asleep.

The Academy entrance exam results were announced a week later. True to its status as the Empire’s most prestigious educational institution, the result notices were delivered directly to each examinee’s home.

While the Countess opened the envelope, Misha’s face turned nearly pale. But when the Countess shrieked with delight upon reading its contents, Misha immediately shrieked along with her.

It was the first time I’d ever heard the Countess make such an unladylike sound. The Count himself chuckled heartily with joy.

I quietly slipped away so the family could enjoy this moment together—I already knew what was inside my own envelope.

The Count came to my room much later, after confirming my rejection notice.

“Next year the mansion will be quieter, so you’ll be able to focus more on your studies. I’ll need to book lessons with the tutors who helped Misha this year.”

“No, Miss Julia’s teaching ability isn’t at all…”

I clamped my mouth shut mid-sentence. What right did I have to say anything?

The Count let out a heavy sigh.

“Rorisha, sometimes we move slowly, sometimes quickly. There’s no need to mistake slowness for failure.”

I stared straight at the Count and said,

“Um… Will you leave me an inheritance?”

“What?”

“I mean, I need to know in advance how much capital I should save up for my business…”

The Count was clearly flustered by my words. Thinking it over myself, I realized I’d said something utterly inappropriate. I wanted to slap my own lips.

“I’m sorry. Please pretend you didn’t hear that.”

“…Rest.”

The Count looked at the wall in evident bewilderment for a moment before leaving.

“Whew… You’ve really gone completely off the rails, Rorisha.”

Cursing myself, I slumped into a chair.

Just then, Misha entered the room with a bright smile.

Damn it.

I clenched my teeth tightly.

I’ll sincerely congratulate her. I’ll congratulate her. Congrats, congrats!

“Misha, congratulations on passing!”

Misha sat down in front of me, rubbing her cheeks as if her smile had caused a cramp at the corners of her mouth.

“Oh, it’s nothing special. The Roar family has always been intelligent, you know. Didn’t they say Grandfather revived the family from crisis thanks to Father’s intellectual abilities?”

It was a story I knew well. Back when the previous Count Roar had fallen out of the Emperor’s favor and lived in near-confinement on his estate.

That was also when the Count met my mother. And his politically strategic marriage to the wealthy merchant’s daughter—who enjoyed the Emperor’s goodwill—was precisely his escape from that political isolation.

“I see.”

It was the first time I’d seen Misha genuinely smile at me with warmth. Perhaps it was the natural generosity of someone who already possessed everything—whatever it was, that’s how it felt.

She even leaned toward me intimately.

Don’t do that—it’s scary!

“I saw your result notice, you know?”

“Y-you did?”

“It said zero points.”

“Oh… Well, you know. I mostly studied whatever I wanted, so I guess I only read the wrong books.”

Cold sweat broke out. I’d assumed they’d only state pass or fail—I never expected them to send actual scores.

Misha’s eyes sparkled as she whispered,

“You did actually take the exam, right?”

Regret With All Your Might (Completed Main Story)

Side Story 5 Side Story 4

When yandere male lead believes she loves him — but she never did

“How dare you!”

“How dare you make me love you, only to cast me aside as nothing more than a friend?!?

“I will never accept that.”

“I will never let you return to him.”

“Even if I have to burn myself to ashes.”

“Even if I must shatter my purity, my dignity, my very soul.”

“I will never let you escape me!”

This was the first novel that introduced me to the matriarchal genre. I’ve read it three times already!

At first, the male lead despised the female lead. Later, he misunderstood that she liked him, so he condescendingly and reluctantly reciprocated her feelings.

Then, he suddenly discovered that she was kind to everyone in the same way, and there was already someone she cherished in her heart, and that person was not him.

The male lead couldn’t believe it, he became angry and crazy. He was determined to capture her body and heart by any means necessary.

Synopsis:

Want to see how a green tea bitch male lead falls in love with the female lead?

Want to see how he flirtatiously pursues the female lead?

Want to see how he gets slapped in the face repeatedly?

The male lead is a green tea bitch, a poisonous lotus, jealous, ruthless, unscrupulous, with a venomous heart, and he’s also a delusional maniac.

The female lead is righteous, positive energy-filled, kind, a holy mother.

Let’s see how two people with extreme personalities come together~

You’re bound to regret it if you skip this novel. Read the review & spoiler to find out what you might be missing!

  1. Apu Chapter 20

How sweet are they!! I’m curious how well our ML will come to know Roba. I have a feeling he’ll know more about her than she does herself. And we finally get to hear about the princess Roba will come to support. Roba will be the “little lion cub” she raises. I wonder if she has the intention to rise to the throne. Or if she really has no familial bond to the second prince. I think Roba will come to believe the princess hold romantic feelings towards ML and try to avoid him. ML knows the princess just wants him as a shield and will openly pursue Roba, Roba will just this he’s trying to get her in trouble with the princess. And the princess wouldn’t support ML courting Roba because she using her as protection. And ML wouldn’t like that cause only he can protect Roba, Roba can protect herself tho. This is my guess, I wonder to see if this is accurate or not. They are so cute hhehehe

There is an error!! I spent more than half the chapter trying to figure out who the “earl” was—> it’s her father, “the count”. I’m a little confused, is she back countdom or back in the village? The duke seems very kind. I wonder if the prince will want Roba as an apothecary, and will make the ML bring her to their side.
