Stop Coming On to Me (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 4
According to Miss Julia’s evaluation, my history and mathematics scores were excellent. Law was a bit difficult—there was simply too much to memorize.
Music, especially piano, didn’t suit my temperament. If I fail the exam, it’ll probably be because of music.
Misha played three instruments, including piano, all at an excellent level.
Thus, whenever we dined together, the Countess would often say that the academy entrance exam should award extra points for music.
She claimed that the artistic sensibility revealed through music belonged only to the chosen few.
Meaning, of course, that my inability to play instruments well was because I was a bastard.
So I’d nod as if agreeing, popping a small piece of meat into my mouth, while inwardly thinking, ‘How ridiculous.’
Even the Count himself probably never expected that the hopeless country girl would transform so elegantly in just seven short years.
I don’t deny that this miracle began with the Count.
But having paid such a price to get this far, I try not to indulge in excessive sentimentality.
After all, someday—sooner if possible—I must leave the Count’s side.
A week before the academy entrance exam, the Count’s household was in a state of extreme tension—not because of me, but because Misha was throwing hysterics.
Misha fought with and cried in front of her tutors, who were trying to give her intensive lessons before the exam. She even screamed that they were testing her on things they’d never taught her—though clearly, the tutors were the ones who’d been wronged.
I ignored Misha’s hysterics and the Countess’s anxiety, focusing solely on my studies.
My face, unwashed and unwashed hair greasy and messy, looked utterly disheveled—but cleanliness wasn’t even on my priority list.
Since the Countess was too busy attending to Misha all day to keep a close watch on me, Miss Julia took the opportunity to stay at the mansion for several extra hours each day.
Miss Julia never gave me a single reassuring word—not even something like “You’ll pass at this level” or “You’re still lacking.” Nothing at all.
She only told me to give my absolute best until the very end. As if I’d ever done otherwise.
When she finished her late lesson and was about to leave, I passed on a message.
“Miss, the Count asked if there’s anything you’d like.”
“Hm?”
“He said he’d like to show his appreciation after the exam.”
“I’ve already received more than enough reward. But how long will you keep calling him ‘the Count’? Don’t you think it’s long past time to change how you address him?”
She said that with a smile and left.
“…Tch.”
The Count… Father.
If I start thinking about things like that now, my head will explode. I buried myself once more in my Imperial Law textbook.
Not long after, I dozed off briefly after lunch because I was so sleepy—but when I woke up, my notebook was gone from my desk. It was the one where I’d compiled everything I’d studied.
“Misha!”
The culprit was obvious. But upon reflection, I realized I’d nearly memorized everything in that missing notebook.
“Ugh, what a lunatic. Do whatever you want.”
I grumbled and went back to reading the book I’d been studying.
If only I hadn’t buried myself in studying like a madwoman, maybe I’d have had the presence of mind to think clearly.
If I had, perhaps I wouldn’t have regretted so deeply not retrieving that notebook immediately.
The Countess appeared in my room that evening as the sun was setting.
Startled by an eerie chill—as if a ghost had entered—I lifted my head from my desk. Teria had already left, so I found myself alone with the Countess.
‘Damn it…’
The Countess sat gracefully on the sofa. I pretended to tidy my tangled hair and sat before her.
“You’ve worked hard.”
“No, I’m still far from adequate.”
“Do you truly believe that?”
What fresh nonsense was this?
Seeing the smile on the Countess’s lips sent a cold shiver through my chest.
“Misha cried for a long time.”
I chose my words as carefully as possible.
“It’s a stressful time for her.”
“Do you know she stole your notebook? She intended to copy your answers for the mock exam the tutors administered.”
“…”
What? How did the conversation turn like this?
My heart began pounding rapidly.
Trending
“I didn’t know. But stealing? It could’ve helped Misha with her studies—the notebook means nothing to me, Countess.”
I replied like a perfectly well-behaved child, as if I’d swapped out my very soul.
A faint smile lingered at the Countess’s lips.
It’s truly astonishing how one person can hate another while smiling.
The Countess spoke.
“The tutors were amazed by your notebook. They wondered which teacher had organized it so well and mistakenly assumed I’d hired additional tutors.”
“…”
Cold sweat broke out on my skin.
“Did Miss Julia compile it for you?”
“Well…”
She cut off my awkward attempt to explain, though her voice remained remarkably gentle, almost unreal.
“Give up on the academy entrance exam. If you say you can’t do it, the Count won’t object.”
“…!”
My breathing had already grown ragged. She gave me no room to respond.
“This is no longer just my personal matter. I can no longer stand by.”
“…”
“If a bastard were to top the Imperial Academy entrance exam… you can’t imagine the humiliation the noble families’ heirs would feel. They’d blame our Roar household for it.”
She spoke with elegant firmness.
“This is a matter of order, Rorisha.”
Humiliation. Humiliation. Humiliation…
My head felt ready to burst. Exhausted from studying through nearly every night, her words struck me like a shock, leaving me dizzy.
Fumbling, I played my last card.
“I’ll discuss it with the Count.”
But she shook her head lightly.
“You’d better not. I wish to handle this matter as quietly as possible.”
“Countess!”
“If you insist on taking the exam, go ahead. But even if you pass, you won’t be allowed to stay at the academy. Who would want to study alongside the daughter of a streetwalker? You’ll be expelled for some reason or another.”
It was a threat—to spread rumors at the academy that my mother was a streetwalker, that I was the daughter of such a woman.
I sprang up from my seat as if recoiling. My fists trembled, yet I feared my legs might give out beneath me.
“Our—our mother… she wasn’t like that! You know that!”
“But the rumors will spread, and you’ll have no way to deny them, Rorisha.”
I steadied my ragged breathing and managed to speak calmly.
“But what about the honor of House Roar and the Count? You know better than anyone that the Count isn’t the kind of man who’d spread such lies.”
“I am.”
She rose slowly and stood facing me. Her beauty sent chills down my spine.
“If destroying my husband’s honor—as the Emperor’s Third Envoy—would protect my daughter from harm, I would do it without hesitation. Think about that.”
My own harsh breathing echoed in my ears.
“You’ll be known your whole life as the daughter of a whore. Even if you endure to the very end with all your cunning, no noble will ever hire you as a tutor. And if by some chance they do, I’ll stop it myself.”
“…”
My legs could take no more. I slowly sank to the floor, and the Countess drifted toward the door, her soft robes whispering behind her.
Just before closing the door, she murmured quietly,
“If you can’t have your husband’s love, shouldn’t you hold onto something else instead?”
It was strange. My life had shattered into pieces, yet no tears came—only a slight drowsiness.
I thought of the Imperial Law notebook I hadn’t fully memorized yet, but forced the thought away and stepped outside.
By the time I reached the city center, night had already fallen. The lights spilling from the shops once again cast the commercial street in a dazzling glow. Yet that street, which I’d walked countless times, suddenly felt unbearably unfamiliar.
Dressed plainly and cloaked in a hooded cloak, I headed to Tholman’s Herbal Shop at the end of the street. The old shopkeeper didn’t know I was of House Roar.
He was amazed that a young girl knew herbs so well and often offered me tea. In return, I’d play the shop assistant, serving customers and boosting sales enough to cover the cost of my tea.
He’d offered me a job at his shop several times.
“What brings you here? I thought you wouldn’t be coming for a while.”
“Oh… I was just passing by. How’s your knee?”
ads
“Same as always, what else?”
“Then I’ll be off.”
“Huh? Already? If you’re leaving so soon, why bother coming at all?”
I turned away awkwardly. Suddenly, nothing made sense anymore—how to respond if someone spoke to me, what the old man’s knee had to do with anything, or even what herbs were.
I walked on through the night.
I tried telling myself the world wouldn’t end just because I couldn’t enter the academy—but the more I thought that, the more I felt I had no world left to lose.
Just as my mother had vanished suddenly, so too had the opportunity of the academy. Now, I was terrified to move forward, unsure if anything even lay ahead.
Maybe I should’ve come to this street much sooner. A half-noble isn’t a noble at all. Perhaps everything went wrong the moment such a girl clung to the Count’s household.

How sweet are they!! I’m curious how well our ML will come to know Roba. I have a feeling he’ll know more about her than she does herself. And we finally get to hear about the princess Roba will come to support. Roba will be the “little lion cub” she raises. I wonder if she has the intention to rise to the throne. Or if she really has no familial bond to the second prince. I think Roba will come to believe the princess hold romantic feelings towards ML and try to avoid him. ML knows the princess just wants him as a shield and will openly pursue Roba, Roba will just this he’s trying to get her in trouble with the princess. And the princess wouldn’t support ML courting Roba because she using her as protection. And ML wouldn’t like that cause only he can protect Roba, Roba can protect herself tho. This is my guess, I wonder to see if this is accurate or not. They are so cute hhehehe

There is an error!! I spent more than half the chapter trying to figure out who the “earl” was—> it’s her father, “the count”. I’m a little confused, is she back countdom or back in the village? The duke seems very kind. I wonder if the prince will want Roba as an apothecary, and will make the ML bring her to their side.
