“Hey! You took my book again, didn’t you?”

“The one who grabs it first gets to read it—what do you mean ‘my book’? Besides, why be greedy for a book you don’t even read?”

“This is, ugh…”

“‘This is, ugh…’? Oh dear, Lady Roar speaking so coarsely!”

“Hah! Me? Coarse? You should watch your own tongue!”

Misha Roar. My half-sister.

She snatched the book off my desk and stormed out. Every step she took made her rich, red hair—so like our mother’s—sway gently.

It’s been seven years since I came to this mansion; dealing with Misha doesn’t even tickle me anymore.

I shook my head and stretched. Having studied until dawn again yesterday, my eyes felt blurry.

I leaned briefly on my desk when the maid Teria brought me lemon tea. Her lemon tea was so sour it could drive you mad—but drinking it instantly refreshed me and banished all drowsiness.

Today I’d planned to just memorize this one thing and then read the book Misha just stole, but my plans were ruined.

But it’s only for a day or so. Misha won’t read more than a paragraph of that sacred debate between the Empire’s two greatest scholars.

Unless, of course, it’s about the proper ruffle thickness for ball gowns.

That book will just get shown to her tutor with the cover as proof she’s read it, then dumped onto a pile of books on one side of her desk. Later, when Misha goes for her massage, I’ll just send Teria to fetch it back.

It’ll be fine—she’ll never even notice the book is missing.

Misha was also preparing for the Academy entrance exam, with five elite private tutors and one famous masseuse assigned by the Countess.

Claiming her skin suffered from the stress of studying, Misha received a facial massage at the same time every day.

To Misha, the Imperial Academy was merely a social venue to find a good husband. Thus, gaining admission meant nothing if she couldn’t impress the boys.

Naturally, I wasn’t assigned anything like a masseuse. The Count had to engage in another dreadful tug-of-war with the Countess just to bring back Teacher Julia.

The Countess resented even the thought of me taking the Academy entrance exam.

My existence as the Count’s illegitimate child was already public knowledge. Still, it wouldn’t look good for the legitimate daughter and an illegitimate child of the same age to enter together—especially since I studied better than she did.

If Misha were to fail the Academy exam—one even illegitimate children could pass—how heartbroken would she be? Assuming, of course, she even understood what heartbreak meant.

Looking back, it felt miraculous. The foul-mouthed girl who used to forage herbs on Toonbar Mountain was now preparing for the Academy entrance exam.

The Countess’s attitude toward me hadn’t changed one bit all this time. Ever since I’d been abruptly dragged into the Count’s mansion, I’d always been in danger.

Back then, the Count returned from his trip, learned I’d been dragged here by the Countess, and immediately took me along on an inspection tour of his domains.

People instantly recognized who the girl sitting beside the Count in the carriage was.

Rumors spread like wildfire that Count Roar—the man famed for his propriety—had brought his illegitimate child. Thus, the Countess could no longer quietly neglect, kill, or drive me away.

Thanks to that, I remained reasonably safe even while the Count was away on another trip.

Things hadn’t been good from the start, though.

During that time, the Countess hired a private tutor, claiming I needed “reformation.” But it was clear he hadn’t come to educate me—he’d come to torment me.

His method of torment was rather novel: constantly shaming me.

For instance, if I made a mistake in addition, he’d dredge up my childhood and sigh deeply as if utterly disappointed.

“Young Lady Rorisha, what were you learning at age eight that you’d get this wrong now? What’s that? Herbs? Sigh… And what was your mother doing back then? …I see. A proper noble young lady would have mastered this by age eight… Sigh…”

Or he’d invoke the Count at every turn.

“Do you intend to disgrace the Count? If you can’t even memorize this, what will become of his dignity at the Imperial Palace…?”

Eventually, just glancing at him made me hear an inner cry: “You wretched, pitiful bastard!”

At first, I tried to endure it. I thought the Countess sending a tutor meant she’d accepted my existence.

But upon closer observation, I realized she’d merely found a subtle way to torment me.

One day, as he pulled his usual tricks, I stared him straight in the eye and said,

“Teacher Julia always said I studied well. Could it be that my poor performance is actually your fault? Have you ever considered that?”

His eyes bulged wide open. I’d never realized his usually half-lidded eyes could widen so much.

“Have you ever wondered whether you yourself are the one disgracing the Count’s name?”

His face turned bright red, and he stormed out.

From the next lesson onward, he began corporal punishment. He’d give me impossible problems and slap my palms once for every mistake.

I instinctively knew reporting him would be useless. If I showed a failed test claiming he’d already taught me, I’d just be branded a liar.

Furious at his cunning, covert cruelty, I resolved to repay him in kind.

I’d become skilled at cursing and fighting because of the children who cursed and hit me. There was no reason not to learn from bullying itself.

After trailing him for a few days, I discovered the tutor wasn’t as clever as I’d thought. I caught him whispering flirtatiously with a young maid in the garden after class.

When the next lesson ended, I asked the Count for a walk—to the garden.

The moment the Count saw the scene from afar, he covered my eyes with his palm, turned me away from it, and stared intently into my eyes.

Chapter 115 Chapter 114

Then, shaking his head slowly, he took my hand and walked back the way we came. He seemed to understand my unspoken plea:

“Please get rid of that man for me.”

After that, there was no more private tutor. Teria took care of me, and I spent my days reading books the Count brought me. I finally felt happily free.

Though my happiness never lasted long.

After the tutor, the next person the Countess sent against me was her own daughter. Misha Roar—that girl… even I found her tricky to handle.

Because Misha Roar wasn’t just the Count’s daughter; she was also the legitimate heir of House Roar, far beyond the reach of an illegitimate child like me.

Once the Countess realized I was aware of this, she began using Misha to harass me—first with words, later physically.

For a while, I suffered defeat after defeat, but I soon found a way.

Simply put, Misha Roar was a hothouse flower—and intellectually, she was barely above a plant.

How burdensome the Academy entrance exam—designed for the Empire’s brightest—must be for someone like her.

But for me, it was the opportunity I’d finally been waiting for. Not a miracle like having the Count as my father, but a miracle I could earn through my own effort.

The Academy had dormitories. Once I moved in, I’d leave this house and step out from under the Count’s protection and influence.

I was sincerely grateful for everything the Count had given me, but I’d never once felt this mansion was my home.

The Countess’s abuse and Misha’s torment sometimes left me exhausted and weary, yet I couldn’t entirely blame them.

After all, I was an intruder in this household.

But graduating from the Academy would let me become a private tutor welcomed by noble families. Then, like Teacher Julia, I could live independently without marrying.

I was truly giving it my all. Though I lacked five private tutors, I studied as fiercely as if waging war alongside Teacher Julia.

The Countess never said it aloud, but she was dreadfully anxious I might outperform Misha and pass the exam.

It became commonplace for my notes to turn up as ashes in the fireplace or for my books to vanish. So I simply chose to memorize everything I studied that day.

Even when the Count tried to bring back Teacher Julia, the Countess limited my lessons to just two hours a day, claiming too many outsiders coming and going worried her.

Thus, I started previewing the night before to make the most of those two hours. When the teacher arrived, I bombarded her with prepared questions.

During lessons, I organized the teacher’s answers and insights; in the afternoons, I resolved doubts by consulting books and memorizing what I’d learned. Then at night, I began previewing again.

Fortunately, the Count possessed an excellent library and allowed his daughters to borrow books freely.

I heard Misha’s tutors were specialists in Academy preparation. Rumor even said they knew the exam questions in advance—that’s why they commanded such high fees.

But I didn’t believe it. If they truly knew the questions, they’d just kill time until the exam and have Misha memorize those answers.

Yet after each lesson, they’d often troop out into the hallway looking flustered. That meant Misha’s refusal to study might tarnish their professional reputations.

Mocking Misha inwardly at such scenes became my brief amusement during breaks.

Now I can speak Imperial and Agael fluently at an advanced level. My Smailan—the language from across the sea—isn’t bad either.

All the colorful, complex vulgarities I used as a child lie dormant within me, but in daily life, I speak refined standard Imperial as if using a foreign tongue.

Living among nobles meant I rarely needed coarse or vulgar speech; noble verbal duels were highly refined and cutting. It was a battle of malice, not momentum.

Sometimes I’d drift off like this, lost in thought—but I’ve learned it’s far better to spend time on myself than to stew over past grievances and hatred.

I will enter the Imperial Academy. Then everything will be resolved—saving myself and honoring the Count alike.

  1. Apu Chapter 20

How sweet are they!! I’m curious how well our ML will come to know Roba. I have a feeling he’ll know more about her than she does herself. And we finally get to hear about the princess Roba will come to support. Roba will be the “little lion cub” she raises. I wonder if she has the intention to rise to the throne. Or if she really has no familial bond to the second prince. I think Roba will come to believe the princess hold romantic feelings towards ML and try to avoid him. ML knows the princess just wants him as a shield and will openly pursue Roba, Roba will just this he’s trying to get her in trouble with the princess. And the princess wouldn’t support ML courting Roba because she using her as protection. And ML wouldn’t like that cause only he can protect Roba, Roba can protect herself tho. This is my guess, I wonder to see if this is accurate or not. They are so cute hhehehe

There is an error!! I spent more than half the chapter trying to figure out who the “earl” was—> it’s her father, “the count”. I’m a little confused, is she back countdom or back in the village? The duke seems very kind. I wonder if the prince will want Roba as an apothecary, and will make the ML bring her to their side.
