“Oh dear!”

The coachman, seeing Litania, blinked in surprise, then suddenly grew annoyed.

“Oh my, miss! What are you doing standing there like a dummy?”

They had initially panicked, thinking she’d been splashed with mud by the carriage, but since she stood alone by the corridor with no maid in tow, they assumed she was some insignificant noble’s daughter.

“Please step aside—you’re blocking the way.”

“Either call your maid to change your dress or do something about it.”

Soldiers summoned to remove the carriage brushed past Litania, rebuking her as if she were in their way.

Whether because she had never stepped outside the palace before, or because she didn’t even bring a maid, they clearly failed to recognize her noble status.

“Princess Litania!”

Startled by the voice calling her, Litania lifted her head as she awkwardly smoothed her skirt, preparing to move aside.

A knight with red hair sprinted toward her and bowed deeply—he was the younger brother of the noblewoman she had met earlier in the waiting room.

“My apologies for the delayed greeting; I didn’t realize you were here… Oh, why do you look like this?”

He looked down at her mud-splattered skirt, then glanced at the soldiers standing dumbfounded before the cart laden with wilted flowers.

“What are you all doing? How dare you be so disrespectful to the Princess!”

“…S-sorry!”

“We didn’t recognize her!”

Princess Litania. The royal disgrace. Even if she was scorned, she was still a princess. Not only had they failed to recognize her, but they had also mistreated her as if she were some lowborn noble girl—now the soldiers’ faces turned pale as they braced for reprimand.

Yet Princess Litania did not punish them.

“My skirt is wet… I can’t enter the ballroom like this. Is there a place I can rest?”

Litania asked the red-haired knight without even looking at the soldiers. Their eyes widened.

“Return to the waiting room, Your Highness.”

“Oh, but I’d rather not meet anyone else.”

As Litania pointed to her wet skirt and offered a shy smile, the knight immediately understood and retracted his suggestion.

“I apologize—my thinking was short-sighted. The east balcony on the second floor should be empty. Let me escort you there.”

“Thank you. What’s your name?”

“I am Vane Cherisfilt. I serve as Princess Herna’s guard.”

No wonder he arrived so quickly—he must have been nearby because of his duty to Herna.

“Princess Litania, this way.”

The man who introduced himself as Vane led Litania toward the staircase, glaring at the still-dazed soldiers.

“What are you all waiting for? Get that cart cleared!”

“Yes, sir!”

As the soldiers scrambled to reorganize the cart behind them, Vane guided Litania up to the second floor.

Since the ballroom was held on the first floor, the second floor was so deserted it was hard to believe it belonged to the same palace.

Vane seated Litania on a sofa slightly away from the railing and bowed low.

“I’ll send for a maid to help you freshen up.”

“No need. It’s not soaked through—this will dry on its own.”

“But…”

“Actually, I don’t have another dress to change into.”

She owned only this one dress, so attending the ball was already hopeless. As Litania spoke honestly, Vane’s expression darkened.

“Princess, you graciously gave up your waiting room to my sister, and yet you’ve endured such discourtesy—I am deeply ashamed.”

“Oh, don’t mention it. Don’t worry about such things.”

“…”

Vane looked at the princess before him, puzzled.

She had shown kindness to strangers who had just met her, given up her seat, and then been drenched in mud—and yet she showed not a trace of resentment toward them.

“My sister and I have never met Princess Litania before today. May I ask why you showed us such kindness?”

“Hmm? It’s not so much a reason as… isn’t it natural to give up your seat to a pregnant woman? Anyone would have done the same.”

It wasn’t natural. In such circumstances, most would have ignored her.

That’s how noble society worked.

“Well, if you must have a reason, I did it because kindness eventually returns as kindness. You could call it a cycle of goodwill.”

“Kindness returns as kindness…”

At Litania’s words, Vane frowned. She had grown up within the palace walls, it seemed—this princess was astonishingly naive.

That kindness would return as kindness? Even palace servants would scoff at such a notion.

“Oh? You don’t believe me?”

“No, no—I’m merely humbled by Your Highness’s words…”

Litania knew Vane was looking at her with pity.

‘He must think I’m foolish and innocent.’

But Litania didn’t believe she was wrong.

‘If this were a novel, it would be even truer.’

Kindness always gets repaid. The mud on her dress or being forced to sit in this obscure corner—these inconveniences meant nothing to her.

Why?

“Because, as proof, you brought me here despite the rain.”

Now she had met a royal guard. If exchanging a little discomfort for that was a trade, it wasn’t bad at all.

“I wanted to express my gratitude for Your Highness’s consideration toward my sister…”

“Exactly! That’s the repayment. You could have ignored me. But you reached out to me. And you’re Herna’s guard—if you’re caught leaving your post, you’ll get scolded.”

“…”

“If I’d had to stand all night in the rain-soaked corridor, I’d have been miserable too.”

Seeing Litania’s smile, Vane’s gaze wavered.

For a moment, he seemed to ponder something, then removed his red cloak and knelt on one knee before her.

“Vane?”

“I must return to my post. Princess Litania, please use this to cover your skirt.”

“Won’t you be reprimanded for appearing without your cloak?”

He certainly would be. But to him, it was a trivial matter.

Yes, punishment might make his body weary.

But leaving the princess who had shown kindness to him and his sister sitting with a soiled skirt? That would weigh heavier on his heart.

“I merely did what was right and proper.”

With Vane’s earnest gaze, Litania smiled and accepted his cloak. The red fabric settled over her pale green dress.

“Thank you, Vane.”

“I’m sorry I couldn’t be of greater help in helping you enjoy the ball.”

Vane bowed politely and returned to fulfill his duty as a royal guard.

Litania gently waved after his retreating figure, then turned her head to gaze down at the ballroom below.

Though the sun had set, the palace interior glowed brilliantly. As she listened to the music signaling the start of the spring festival ball, Litania sighed softly.

‘I can’t attend the ball after all.’

She had rushed to learn dancing from Snow for today—but it seems all that effort was pointless.

‘Today just isn’t my day. I’ll just watch quietly.’

Still, actually seeing the lavish ballroom she’d only read about in stories was rather enjoyable.

The ceiling, crowned by a dome, was made of brilliant blue glass evoking a spring sky. Upon the tall pillars supporting the dome were carved seven beasts and twelve angels.

Chandeliers adorned with gemstones sparkled in the light, decorating the hall’s center, while on the wide, polished marble dance floor, noblewomen in sleek satin gowns with lace-trimmed skirts gathered in small groups, chatting.

Along the corridor, orderly servants carried trays of appetizers. Beneath the circular stone staircase, laid with lavender carpets, musicians in formal attire continued their performance.

White pillars decorated with spring blossoms stood beside the bustling crowd below, and Litania smiled.

‘Well, you can’t expect a full meal after just one bite. Think of it as an experience.’

The opportunity would surely come again.

Perhaps, just perhaps, while waiting like this, a decent man might happen upon her.

“I’m afraid this view isn’t the best—would you like to step outside to a more open space?”

…And just as she thought it, it happened.

“Little miss.”

A flash of gold appeared above the railing, and impossibly beautiful man materialized before Litania.

Her mouth fell open involuntarily.

‘Good heavens.’

He was radiant as the midsummer sun. Tall enough to look down on most men, with hair of golden sweetness that stole the breath, and a voice as resonant as chimes.

His face, with gently downturned eyes and a soft smile, called to her—and Litania nearly swooned.

‘What is this? How can such a man exist in this world?’

Even Vane, Herna’s guard, was a tall and handsome man—but this man was on an entirely different level.

Litania forgot the rule that one should never stare at a stranger’s face and looked up at the golden-haired man.

The man, meeting her gaze with quiet intensity, tilted his head slightly in curiosity.

“Forgive me a moment.”

A large hand, gloved in white, approached and gently cupped her chin. Then, with the tip of his finger, he lightly pressed against her lower lip.
