A slow voice slipped into his ear. Cassian couldn’t bring himself to face Asar. It was too painful to see his beloved elder brother broken like this.

Another hand slipped into Cassian’s. His body turned.

“Don’t listen. You don’t need to hear any more.”

Veronica appeared. She had been watching the two from the side, and now she scoffed.

“No matter how convincing your words sound, in the end, you’re still hiding all your own faults. If things really happened as you claim—that His Highness Prince Cassian abandoned everything and ran away—then your counterpart must’ve had issues too. Because there’s no way you made no effort at all. From the very beginning, judging your younger brother and meeting him under those terms already made you no different from the very people you claimed to despise.”

Veronica then glared at Asar.

“So don’t twist your words. This outcome exists because of your choices. Whether you intended it or not, you made a choice in that moment. Even giving up is still a choice.”

All his seemingly reasonable arguments were merely excuses. He wanted to blame others for the misfortunes that befell him. His story was genuinely tragic, but to Veronica, it sounded like he hadn’t even resisted his own fate—and worse, had dragged Cassian into it. And she knew she wasn’t any different herself.

“Is this really your wish? Is this really a miracle? None of us here are happy, so how can you call this a miracle? Don’t rationalize your choices as unavoidable. Among countless possible lives, you clearly could have been different. Even if you couldn’t change your own fate, you could have freely let His Highness Prince Cassian live his own life. But you didn’t. Because you were too afraid to face it alone.”
