“Your Highness, you’re still unwell and need to rest.”

Roxiana’s eyes, which had been frozen like a doll’s, turned toward Patria. Only then did Patria realize she hadn’t introduced herself.

“I’m the maid who’ll be serving you from now on… no, the handmaiden Patria.”

Patria, coming from a woodcutter’s family, had no surname, and she worried how she’d answer if Roxiana asked which house she belonged to. Yet Roxiana asked nothing and quietly sat down on the bed.

Moving only when instructed, she seemed as though her soul had vanished, leaving behind merely an empty shell—so fragile she appeared as if she might crumble away into dust at the slightest breeze, a sight pitiful enough to break one’s heart.

“Your Highness, shall I ask the kitchen to send up a meal? Is there anything you’d particularly like to eat?”

“I’m not a princess.”

Roxiana’s lips, which had seemed incapable of moving, parted.

“Pardon?”

“I’m not a princess. Can’t you see this?”

Roxiana tugged at the neckline of her dress. The already low-cut dress slipped further down, revealing even more of her pale skin.

Patria stared at the sunflower branded onto Roxiana’s collarbone. Against her porcelain skin, the slave mark stood out all the more vividly.

Whoever had branded her was truly cruel—to mark her in such a visible place.

Feeling anger toward that unknown person, Patria said,

“His Grace addressed you as princess, so to me, you are a princess.”

She truly believed it. She didn’t care what the other servants thought of Roxiana. Patria had resolved to treat this princess, whom His Grace the Grand Duke worried over, as a princess herself.

Hoping, perhaps, that this fragile princess might one day grow stronger.

But apparently, that wasn’t what Roxiana wanted. Her expressionless face twisted, and raw pain spilled forth unfiltered.

“No, no, no no. No. No, Patria. I’m not a princess anymore. My country has fallen, and my entire family is dead. The Franche Royal Family failed to protect its people, and Khanta has been reduced to a colony of Gania. So how can I possibly be a princess? How can someone who couldn’t protect either her family or her people call herself a princess?”

“Your Highness…”

“Please, please. Please don’t call me princess anymore. I beg you. I’m not a princess.”

Patria realized that the title “princess” was now a blade piercing Roxiana’s heart. Though she couldn’t fully grasp the despair of failing to protect one’s nation and people, she understood, at least a little, the sorrow of losing one’s family.

If she’d been called princess while still with her family, then now—without them—that title must surely cut deep.

“Then… what would you prefer I call you?”

“Slave girl, you, that thing—anything’s fine. Call me whatever you like, just please don’t call me princess.”

“Then… I’ll call you Lady Roxiana.”

“No, I’m not—”

“Please, Lady Roxiana. His Grace gets angry if I don’t serve you with utmost care. You have no idea how terrifying he is when he’s angry.”

Fortunately, Roxiana was reasonable. She realized she’d been pressing Patria too hard and lowered her gaze. Her long eyelashes cast deep shadows beneath her eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

Roxiana spoke.

“I only thought of my own feelings. I was terribly rude. I’m sorry.”

Profound grief often robbed people of their reason. Yet even in such pain, Roxiana showed genuine remorse for burdening a servant, and Patria felt drawn to her sincerity.

Even without Floyd’s orders, she wanted to treat Roxiana kindly—hoping one day Roxiana might regain her light and smile again.

“Lady Roxiana, please lie down a bit longer. I’ll bring your meal shortly.”

Roxiana didn’t stop Patria as she left.

She didn’t want to eat anything. Anything she swallowed would surely come right back up. Even the air she breathed felt repulsive.

But she didn’t want to cause Patria any more trouble. Patria was blameless. If anyone bore guilt, it was herself—for having prayed in the Grand Temple unaware that her family was being slaughtered.

Thus, she alone must bear all this guilt and sorrow.

Roxiana lay down on the bed as Patria wished and pulled the blanket up to her chin.

‘If I could just fall asleep and die… and someone would kindly discard my corpse anywhere… how grateful I’d be…’

Grand Duke Floyd Laetean’s office was made entirely of steel. From the desk and chair to the display cabinets, there wasn’t a single item that wasn’t steel. No furnishings had been brought in to soften the space—no rugs, tapestries, or even curtains anywhere in sight, rendering it stark and barren.

This was precisely because of moments like the present.

Seated at the head of the long conference table, Floyd radiated shimmering heat waves from his body.

He was furious—but even he couldn’t pinpoint the exact source of his rage.

‘That damned princess!’

He’d saved her from being sold into slavery. Had she been sold, she’d have ended up beneath some vile, merciless brute who treated female slaves like filth, suffering torment for the rest of her life before dying in misery.

He’d not only rescued her from that fate but even given her the finest suite in the ducal palace—the Lily Pavilion. Shouldn’t she be brimming with gratitude and ready to embrace a new life? Wasn’t that the normal reaction?

No matter how great her loss of country and family, shouldn’t she at least resolve to endure her grief and live on? What was with that attitude?

Fine—let’s assume, out of infinite magnanimity, that he could even understand her desire to die. But to ask that her corpse be discarded? What utter nonsense!

What? Did she expect him to become her sword, her shield, and even the seductress in her bed—all for that?

She was an infuriating princess. So infuriating, in fact, that this was why he was so angry.

As Floyd glared at the table, replaying his conversation with Roxiana in his mind, the knights watched him warily.

Hexton, lost in thought, yawned and rested his elbows on the table—only to jerk them back with a yelp: “Ow! Hot!”

The table, forged of steel, was glowing red from the heat radiating off Floyd’s body. Cain blinked his one remaining eye and cautiously spoke up.

“Ahem… my lord. It’s getting awfully hot.”

Floyd’s ashen eyes, fixed on the table, snapped toward Cain. Seeing Cain flinch backward, Floyd said plainly,

“Sorry.”

He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. The heat that had been searing the very air gradually subsided.

Seizing the moment, Arsen quickly reported,

“My lord. The ship’s captain claims he didn’t know slaves were aboard. He was newly hired, so it seems likely he took a bribe. Once we investigate further and confirm this, he intends to compensate us for the ship’s repair costs.”

Floyd nodded without opening his eyes. Adrian continued,

“There were seventeen slaves in total—excluding… the Princess of Khanta. Ten wish to remain in Torkan; the rest want to return home. I’ve instructed the relevant officials to handle their cases. And…”

Adrian glanced at Cain, signaling him to continue, but Cain avoided his gaze. Adrian then kicked Cain’s shin under the table. Cain gritted his teeth and glared at Adrian with his lone eye.

Though his eyes remained shut, Floyd sensed every movement. He snapped his eyes open and barked,

“If you’ve got something to say, say it properly!”

Adrian looked back at Cain, but Cain stared fixedly at a blank wall as if he’d just made some grand discovery. Finally, Adrian sighed and spoke.

“My lord… what do you intend to do with that woman?”

“That woman?”

“The… Princess of Khanta.”

“The princess I saved—what’s it to you what I do with her?”

Heat waves began rising from Floyd’s body once more, but Adrian pressed on undeterred.

“It matters. The Princess of Khanta, presumed dead, is alive—and branded as a slave. She wouldn’t have branded herself, and it doesn’t seem she was captured while fleeing. That likely means Lucas Felur branded her himself and then declared her dead. If we shelter her now, Gania will surely take issue with us.”

“So what if they do? Am I supposed to hold back just because I’m afraid of Gania? Should I cower in fear of that bastard Lucas?”

“No—it’s not that we fear Gania per se. We’re already stretched thin dealing with the monsters on our side. If Gania sends troops to eliminate the last surviving member of the Franche Royal Family, things will get complicated for us. Since Gania’s turned Khanta into a colony, Khantan knights have likely been absorbed into their forces—they’ve got manpower to spare.”

Floyd glared at Adrian.

“What exactly are you getting at?”

“It might be best to give her a reasonable sum of money and send her away from Torkan once she’s recovered.”

Bang!

Floyd slammed both fists onto the table. The long, heavy table tilted under the force. Hexton tried to steady it but yelped, “Ah! Hot!” and yanked his hand back.

Kirshan, standing beside Floyd, pressed the wobbling table down with his scabbard and said,

“My lord, please calm down.”

“Calm down? Do I look calm to you? The very men I personally chose and placed as captains are now trembling in fear of Gania—and you tell me to calm down? You want me to kick out a poor woman who lost her country and family after being betrayed by her fiancé—and you call that reasonable? Or is this some kind of joke? Will this nonsense end if I just laugh right now?”

Ex-husband Wants Reconciliation

One-line summary: Chasing the wife to the crematorium (making an effort to attract someone who has become indifferent), the female lead doesn’t look back, the second male lead takes the position.

Intro:

To repay the kindness of the older generation, Su Mu crossed into a female-dominated world and became a live-in daughter-in-law of the Yan family, single-handedly saving the Yan family from fire and water.

But her husband, Yan Jiyue, the eldest son of the Yan family, treated her with sarcasm and never showed her a good face.

It wasn’t until after Su Mu’s death that this pampered and arrogant young master shed a few fake tears and pretended to want to die for love.

This life’s kindness was enough. If there was a next life, she would definitely kick Yan Jiyue away.

Who knew that the heavens would be so kind as to allow her to be reborn, returning to the time when she had just married into the Yan family.

Su Mu glanced at the Yan eldest son, who still spoke coldly to her, and threw a divorce letter in front of him.

“Let’s divorce!”

***

Yan Jiyue never imagined that he would be reborn. He happily went to find Su Mu, wanting to make up for the mistakes he had made in his ignorant youth.

Wasn’t the reason the heavens allowed him to be reborn to let him reconcile with Su Mu?

But when he pushed open the door to Su Mu’s room, the person lying on the bed was another man.

Su Mu’s personal attendant, Xie Yi.

Yan Jiyue hated him so much that his teeth itched. In front of Su Mu, Xie Yi was a gentle and considerate whisperer of sweet nothings, but in reality, he was vicious-hearted and deliberately sabotaged their husband and wife relationship.

In the previous life, it was he who secretly hid in Su Mu’s coffin and committed suicide, stealing a step ahead of him to be buried with Su Mu.

Yan Jiyue’s eyes were filled with hatred as he cursed, “What kind of thing are you? Your background is lowly, what right do you have to occupy Su Mu?”

Xie Yi looked at the sleeping Su Mu and no longer pretended to be a whisperer of sweet nothings.

He proudly stuck out his belly, “I have the right because my belly is capable of giving the Wife-master a daughter.”

***

Yan Jiyue was consumed with jealousy. He spread rumors that Xie Yi had once been branded with the mark of a “harlot” on his chest.

But on the night Xie Yi cut off the flesh bearing that mark, Su Mu suddenly realized something was amiss.

“How did you know the exact moment I was poisoned? And why did you show up a month early?”

Xie Yi remained silent, blood from his wound soaking through his robes. His sapphire eyes brimmed with anguish – or was it just a flawless act?

Between a once-arrogant husband now seeking redemption, and a gentle soul willing to die for her – who truly held the darkest secrets? And could it be that Su Mu and Yan Jiyue weren’t the only ones given a second chance at life…?

[Reading Guide]

1. True divorce, chasing the wife to the crematorium, the female lead doesn’t look back, the male lead is Xie Yi.

2. The ex-husband did not cheat, he just realized too late and didn’t realize that he liked the female lead.
