“So my name isn’t ‘Glasses’ but….”

Juno Huntington.

However, Victor didn’t even wait for me to finish speaking before abruptly leaving. His legs were so long that he’d barely taken a few steps before he was already at the cafeteria door.

The trio of queen bees calmly waited, chins resting elegantly in their hands, eyes alone tracking Victor’s departure from the cafeteria.

The moment he vanished completely, as if celebrating a victory, they flipped their hair back with deliberately aloof expressions.

“Hmph.”

Regina, Victor’s ex-girlfriend, looked touched as she alternated her gaze between the two girls.

“Thanks, Chloe, Jenna. Honestly, I was already uncomfortable still being around Victor.”

Chloe responded with a derisive snort.

“You know the rule, right? Among us, no matter how many men you meet, you never even glance at the one who made your friend cry. We all know how deeply Vic hurt you—he doesn’t deserve you returning the favor.”

“Exactly! You shouldn’t even breathe the same air!”

The three of them rejoiced as if they’d just defeated a common enemy. Then, twisting their wrists with elegant gravity as if sealing a blood oath, they brought their pancake knives together like the Three Musketeers.

Squeeeeak—.

Making odd noises with their mouths.

“…….”

I watched that peculiar scene from just across one table.

[This is the timeline separator]

After leaving the cafeteria, the only thing I did was avoid Victor as much as possible.

Victor would probably confront me about why I exposed him as an Awakener.

Well, though Victor was indeed a burly, muscular guy, I wasn’t actually afraid of him.

It was just that dealing with his accusations sounded annoying.

Even before acquiring my passive skill, I’d always been fairly good at masking my presence. Thus, during movement or PE classes, I managed to dodge Victor by slipping through crowds unseen.

Victor really did spend the entire afternoon looking for me.

He even asked others about my whereabouts—after each class ended, he’d show up directly at whichever classroom I was in.

“Hey, clumsy Glasses!”

During activity period, I’d chosen choir and needed to head to the music room for class.

Just as I shoved my textbook haphazardly into a locker and tried to slip out, Victor approached me straight-on from a distance, dressed in his football gear, helmet tucked under his arm.

Ugh, he was so persistent.

But I was just as tenacious as Victor.

I quickly wedged myself into the throng of students all heading to their next class. Victor squeezed his large frame through the crowd and shouted at me.

“Can we just talk already?”

“I have nothing to say to you.”

Besides, if you keep acting like you know me, you’ll draw attention—and I hate that, too.

Our distance narrowed as we got lost in the crowd.

Just as Victor reached out to grab my shoulder, I suddenly collapsed onto the floor—bouncing off the back of a student walking ahead of me and tumbling away on my own.

“Ack!”

This damn paper-thin body!

The physique of a nerd who’d never exercised in his life—except for breathing—ended up sprawled on the ground.

“Hey, watch it…!”

Victor paused, watching me roll across the floor.

“Where’d she go?”

The moment I tumbled across the floor, my passive skill activated.

‘Basic Extra (A).’

It even counted being knocked over by bumping into someone as a hit—was that kindness or overprotectiveness?

Someone stronger than me would’ve noticed my presence immediately. But the hallway was crowded, and Victor seemed flustered, so he failed to detect me right away.

I quickly gathered my paper-thin body and quietly slipped away behind the bewildered Victor.

And before the sixty seconds ran out, I dashed straight into the music room for choir practice.

Absolutely, positively not because I was embarrassed or ashamed to have Victor McQueen see me fall on my own.

Absolutely not.

But I couldn’t avoid Victor forever. As soon as school ended, Ms. Jina summoned me, Adrian, and Victor back to the gym.

It was probably related to the school’s dungeon team activities.

With no choice, I slung my bag over one shoulder and started toward the gym—only for Victor to approach me as if he’d been waiting. His hair was still damp at the tips, likely from showering after football practice.

“Hey, didn’t you say I needed to talk to you? Then why are you avoiding me? Why make me chase you all day?”

“Huh? Avoiding you? I haven’t done that at all. How strange.”

“Oh, really? That’s how you’re playing it?”

I feigned innocence and tried to walk straight into the gym. I heard him let out an exasperated chuckle behind me—but I ignored it.

“Then who was it rolling on the floor after bumping into someone’s back during PE?”

“Me?”

“Who else would it be, squirrel?”

Promoted from “Clumsy Glasses” to “squirrel.” Well, at least I was a living creature now, not an object.

I deliberately shrugged my shoulders to annoy him.

“This tiny thing.”

Glancing sideways at Victor, whose lips curled in irritation, I turned my head forward—and nearly jumped in shock.

While watching Victor follow behind me, I hadn’t noticed the gym’s support pillar right ahead.

I was about to smack my forehead against it and trigger my passive skill again—when instead, a sudden, snow-white hand appeared out of nowhere and intercepted my forehead.

“Are you okay?”

It was Adrian.

He must have come out from the gym early, noticing our noisy commotion—and conveniently shielded my forehead too.

“Thanks. You were already here?”

“I happened to have no student council duties.”

Adrian gave me a gentle smile.

Though his smile was the kind that could make any girl swoon, what I liked most about Adrian was that he was S-rank. Just looking at him made me feel as rich as if I were staring at a vault.

Having two lifelines to an elite school firmly in hand—how satisfying.

“The squirrel looks smug.”

Apparently, I’d let a smile slip without realizing it. Victor narrowed his eyes at me as if he’d witnessed something unthinkable.

I immediately hardened my expression. Victor looked at me as if betrayed.

“What exactly did I say that made you frown like that?”

“Yeah, I don’t owe you a smile too.”

“This guy…”

First he complains about me smiling, then dislikes it even more when I stop—truly impossible to understand.

While Victor and I bickered as we entered the gym, Ms. Jina and Mr. Benjamin walked in. Mr. Benjamin formally greeted us.

“Nice to meet you all. You’re the Awakened students from Rawingham High School, right? I’m Benjamin Trompertz.”

Mr. Benjamin greeted us warmly with the hearty laugh you’d expect from a soldier.

Of course, Victor’s expression wasn’t particularly cheerful—he hadn’t volunteered; Ms. Jina had dragged him here.

“I’ve heard everything already. I also know your ranks from Ms. Jina. Though our team is smaller than those at other schools, I trust that having upperclassmen like you will be perfectly fine.”

“Yeah, sure.”

Victor replied half-heartedly, while Adrian and I nodded.

I’d heard Victor had finally confessed, tearfully and reluctantly, that he was S-rank under Ms. Jina’s pressure.

‘Surprisingly naive.’

Easy to handle, one might say.

While I glanced at Victor, Mr. Benjamin finished his greetings and walked toward the center of the gym. All four of us instinctively followed him with our eyes.

He stood with legs shoulder-width apart, hands clasped behind his back, and spoke in a resonant voice.

“As you all know, I’ve gathered the four of you here today to give a brief briefing on how our ‘Rawingham High School Team’ will operate moving forward.”

A subordinate immediately dashed forward, carrying a portable chalkboard.

“Including Ms. Jina, a C-rank Healer, the five of us will be deployed directly into dungeons whenever a low-level Gate opens in Connecticut—particularly near Rawingham High School—to close it. For now, monsters haven’t emerged from Gates in the U.S., but in some other countries, monsters frequently appear alongside Gates. That means monsters could very well appear in our next Gate.”

He pointed to a spot on the chalkboard.

“Do you know that just a few days ago, the Tieson Boarding School team in New York entered a dungeon and closed a Gate?”

“Yes, I think I saw it on the news.”

Adrian answered.

“At Tieson Boarding School in New York, they’ve already trained student teams using global dungeon data and successfully closed a D-rank dungeon—the first official deployment of a school Awakened team. All dungeon data is shared internationally, and military suppliers are already using dungeon byproducts to manufacture various weapons.”

The aide handed each of us a thick stack of papers.

“We’ll train using dungeon data compiled by Tieson Boarding School and other nations, then deploy to suppress any Gate that opens in Connecticut.”

I quickly skimmed the documents the aide had given me.

They were neatly organized by country—of course including that elite New York high school, as well as South Korea, China, Costa Rica, Canada, Australia, and others—listing each dungeon’s data in sequence.

Detailed information included dungeon ranks, the monsters that appeared, and exactly which Awakeners defeated them and how.

Then, Ms. Jina quietly raised her hand.

“What is it, Ms. Jina?”

“Well… I mean, of course I’m serving the nation, town, and school—but is there any risk in sending students into dungeons? Naturally, I trust the military and you, Mr. Benjamin, but…”

She was a health teacher—but still a teacher, prioritizing student safety above all. Mr. Benjamin nodded understandingly.

“Of course, every officer, including myself, places the students’ lives as our highest priority. We will never recklessly suppress a Gate. Students will only be deployed for early suppression of relatively low-difficulty Gates. If we fail to close a Gate, the U.S. military’s Awakened unit will intervene directly.”

Of course, the number of U.S. military Awakeners is likely less than a tenth of what’s needed—it’s realistically impossible for such a small force to manage this vast territory alone.

What Mr. Benjamin meant was simply that the student Awakened team existed because they needed every available hand—even a cat’s paw—but that they had no intention of sending us to our deaths.

“Your parents’ consent forms will include these details. Rest assured, your safety is our foremost concern.”

“Yes…”

Next, Adrian raised his hand.

Like me, he’d carefully read through the report before asking calmly,

“This report states that dungeon information is obtained via a ‘Rank Measuring Device’ jointly developed by a military supplier and the U.S. Army—correct?”

“That’s right.”

“Is there perhaps any device that can predict when a Gate might open in Connecticut?”

Male lead is a Love-Obsessed Merman

When he discovers she has gone, he risks everything to pursue her on land, enduring agonizing pain to transform his tail into human legs…

One-line summary: Male lead chases female lead. The male lead’s love is a bit sick, an invincible love brain.

Synopsis

During a voyage at sea, Jiang Yang accidentally captures a merman.

Servant: I heard that mermen are fierce and brutal.

Jiang Yang looks at the merman obediently rubbing her palm like a puppy: “You call this fierce and brutal?”

Servant: I heard that mermen have no human nature.

Jiang Yang looks at the merman with wet puppy eyes, obsessively calling her ‘A Yang’ like a childish infant: “You call this having no human nature?”

With great difficulty, she releases the merman back into the sea and returns to shore.

Who would have thought that in less than half a month, the merman, who should have been freely wandering in the South China Sea, would shed his scales, endure the pain of losing his tail, transform into human legs, and come ashore to find her?

He kneels at her feet, rubbing her palm, with merman tears rolling down: “A Yang, don’t abandon me.”

Chapter Comments (176)

  1. Sign Bet Chapter 22

The pacing of this story is honestly so good. Every chapter just flows perfectly into the next and keeps me hooked.

  2. Sign Bet Chapter 35
I am actually wheezing at Victor’s immediate, cat-like panic the second Juno mentioned bringing Adrian to the game. He was acting so incredibly smug and confident about his guaranteed victory, but the mere thought of another guy going with her completely threw him off. It is so funny how transparent he is about wanting her all to himself.
  3. Sign Bet Chapter 36
I am actually wheezing at Juno dramatically raising her arms like a stage performer to convince those occult nerds that their cursed juice had “ominous spiritual energy” inside it. She literally saved them from severe food poisoning by making up a whole Level-One classified secret on the spot. Her inner monologue about them being better off getting bitten by a radioactive spider was absolute peak comedy.
