“What are you saying, Juno? How could it possibly be your fault?”

She, who had been scolding Adrian all this time, turned her gaze toward me. Adrian also looked at me with a puzzled expression.

“I should’ve stayed quiet when Thompson’s gang threw me into the swimming pool, but I provoked them instead.”

“What? They deliberately pushed you in?”

“And when they pointed a gun at me because I didn’t please them, I should’ve just stayed silent too—but instead, I ended up provoking Thompson.”

“A gun?! They pointed a gun at you?!”

“And when they belittled me, saying I was far inferior to my older brother, I should’ve just endured it. Adrian only defended me and saved me from Thompson’s gang. Even then, I should’ve stopped him—because in the end, that act alone provoked Thompson’s gang further.”

“What on earth… are you talking about? Explain it clearly, please.”

My calm words made Ms. Jina’s expression tremble violently.

Oh my God—without me elaborating further, she seemed to have assumed the worst and let out a low sigh.

Adrian, too, stared at me with a bewildered look. By mixing truth with embellishment and fabrication, even he was now confused and flustered.

But my previously impassive expression had merely been building up.

I quietly took a breath, preparing to detonate a bomb right in front of Ms. Jina’s pitiful face. Then, as if I could no longer hold it in, I spoke in a trembling voice.

“It must be common for Thompson’s gang to bully other kids—probably as natural as breathing. And what they said was right—I truly am a worthless child who shouldn’t even exist in this world. I deserve to be bullied. I’m inferior to my older brother.”

“Juno… how can you say that?”

“…I hate myself. I’m my parents’ failed creation, Teacher! I just want to disappear from this world—wahhh!!”

I covered my face with my hands, feigning overwhelming emotion as I choked back sobs.

Then, wailing loudly enough to redden my nose, I peeked through my fingers to check Ms. Jina’s reaction.

Sure enough, Ms. Jina’s expression was a sight to behold.

Her face—belonging to an American woman whose life motto was “Love Yourself,” proud to her core, and a school nurse deeply sensitive to children’s mental health—completely crumbled.

She stood there in horror, confronted by the sheer scale of school violence, the true face of Thompson’s gang, and a pitiful girl seemingly broken beyond repair.

Ms. Jina grabbed my shoulders and stammered,

“N-no, that’s not true at all! Juno, it’s not your fault. Adrian, listening to this, it seems you did exactly what you were supposed to do. You protected Juno. I had no idea… not even in my dreams. Leave this to me—I’ll speak to the principal immediately. You two may go now!”

Then she knelt down before me, locking eyes with me.

Her blue eyes shimmered with pity for me and regret for only now understanding the situation.

“You’re the most precious child there is, Juno. Never call yourself a failure! Always come to me if anything happens.”

“Oh, of course. Thank you, Teacher.”

I reached out my hand dramatically to express my gratitude.

Beside me, Adrian looked at me in confusion.

[This is the timeline separator]

“I really… had no idea you possessed such talent, Juno.”

Adrian stared at me with admiration in his eyes.

“Maybe you should join the drama club?”

“Thanks for the compliment.”

I sniffled after my tearful performance and slipped out of the principal’s office. Adrian trailed closely behind me.

Though the word “trailed” sounded oddly unfitting for someone over six feet tall.

In the faculty room, Adrian—who had been gloomy and disappointed in himself earlier—now grinned cheerfully at me.

“It’s all thanks to you. If it weren’t for you, I’d have been called to the principal’s office too, and then my parents would’ve found out… and I absolutely don’t want that. You acted for me in front of Ms. Jina, right?”

“Well, yes—but I also gained something thanks to you freezing those football players. So let’s just say we helped each other out.”

“Gained something?”

Adrian tilted his head, puzzled.

As I walked with him trailing behind like a tail, my mind drifted elsewhere.

Anyway, thanks to Adrian freezing every last one of those football players who’d been beating kids in the dimly lit pool, our school’s dungeon team had become a bit more comfortable.

As a result, only Adrian and I remained on the team.

‘But McQueen—that bastard ran off all by himself!’

Ms. Jina had clearly said, “Everyone who was at the mansion when Adrian froze it must come!”—yet Victor McQueen had slipped away entirely.

Apparently, one more summons would spell disaster for him.

‘Damn that lousy guy. Just wait till I catch you.’

I led Adrian out of the school building. A vast grassy field spread before us. I’d come out here specifically to find Victor McQueen and give him a piece of my mind.

But just then—

Thud-thud-thud-thud-thud—

“Ugh?”

A powerful gust of wind swept across the distant field, turning the grass blue with its force. Adrian and I frowned at the roaring mechanical sound cutting through the fierce wind and air.

“What the… what is this?”

The wind grew stronger. My red hair whipped wildly, and through my blurred vision, I saw a massive metallic object landing on the field.

“Holy sh—”

A curse slipped out involuntarily.

Adrian asked beside me what “michin” meant, but I was too stunned to answer.

A pitch-black helicopter had just landed right in the middle of the field.

And then a man leapt out.

He wore black aviator sunglasses, a beret, and a military uniform.

Just one look was enough.

He was an Awakened soldier assigned to our school.

[This is the timeline separator]

The man’s name was Benjamin—Benjamin Trompertz.

Mr. Benjamin flashed a brilliant white smile and greeted us.

“I’m Officer Benjamin Trompertz of the United States Army Special Forces. Pleased to meet you. My unit was assigned the mission of closing the Gate, so I’ve come here.”

In my mind, American soldiers were burly men with square jaws and imposing shoulders.

But the first American soldier I ever met—Mr. Benjamin—was closer to a charming young man with wavy brown hair and an attractive smile.

Of course, he must have been over thirty.

He had arrived out of nowhere in a helicopter, landing right in our schoolyard—he was the special forces officer assigned to close the Gate.

I glanced alternately between Mr. Benjamin’s movie-star grin and the pitch-black helicopter behind him.

‘Okay, arriving by helicopter—that’s fine. But is his face part of the dramatic effect too? He’s ridiculously handsome.’

Admittedly, choosing a helicopter over a perfectly functional car wasn’t exactly low-key—but then again, wasn’t this a drama? Such theatrical flair was acceptable.

‘Still… don’t tell me the genre’s about to shift into military fiction.’

Ms. Jina, having witnessed the commotion on the field, rushed out of the faculty room and approached the three of us.

“Oh, it’s Officer Trompertz! I’d already heard you were coming.”

“That’s correct. You must be Ms. Jina.”

Ms. Jina apparently already knew about the officer assigned to our school. Mr. Benjamin’s green eyes curved into a pretty, friendly smile.

“Children, say hello. This is Officer Trompertz, who’ll be commanding our school’s dungeon team.”

“Hello.”

Mr. Benjamin looked at the two of us and tilted his head slightly.

“But the number of student Awakeneds seems far fewer than what I was previously told. Are these two students the only ones?”

“Well… you see…”

The six or so washed-up football players had been suspended, leaving only Adrian and me from the group of Awakeneds who’d gathered in the gym the previous night.

After Ms. Jina briefly explained last night’s incident, worry creased Mr. Benjamin’s brow.

“I see. Only two Awakeneds… While our numbers are significantly lower than other schools, having two high-tier students might still allow us to build an elite team.”

“It’s not just two.”

“Hm?”

Mr. Benjamin turned to look at me at my words.

“There’s one more Awakened student besides the ones who came to the gym.”

[This is the timeline separator]

Victor McQueen had conspicuously skipped the previous Awakened recruitment gathering in the gym.

Apparently, the teachers already knew he was Awakened, but he’d been dodging attendance by constantly using football practice as an excuse.

‘So the other football Awakened Mr. Charlie mentioned before must be Victor.’

Victor seemed to have been evading Ms. Jina’s grasp by hiding behind football practice—but it wasn’t just Ms. Jina who needed him.

I, too, needed him.

Precisely speaking, I needed a high-tier Awakened who could assist in the dungeon.

And Victor McQueen was an S-rank Awakened.

Though the teachers probably didn’t know his exact rank.

‘Now that I know your rank, I can’t let you slip away alone.’

Before Mr. Benjamin and Ms. Jina, I added that Victor McQueen was indeed an Awakened—and that he was “probably” at least A-rank.

Of course, claiming to know Victor’s exact rank would’ve been absurd, so I merely guessed aloud: “I saw him use his skills once—it looked about as strong as mine.”

Hearing that a high-tier Awakened existed, Ms. Jina brightened immediately and went off to find Victor.

Officer Trompertz, who’d been unusually kind to us, also had other business at the school.

He’d come to conduct U.S. Army recruitment outreach among high schoolers. With Gates now opening and society in chaotic transition, many soldiers had reportedly quit the military because of the Gates.

‘So his dramatic helicopter entrance was part of the performance, then.’

With his stylish sunglasses gleaming, he walked cheerfully into the school building.

Not long after, lunchtime arrived.

As soon as class ended, I went straight to the cafeteria, grabbed a round tray, piled it with pancakes, an omelet, and apple juice, and perched myself on a long dining bench.

Just as I was about to cut into my already cooling pancakes and dip them in syrup—

Clack-clack—

The sharp sound of high heels clicking echoed from somewhere nearby.

Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away

This is also on my reread list!

This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.

Definitely worth a read, y’all!

The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.

But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.

Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.

I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.

The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.

As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.

  1. Sign Bet Chapter 22

The pacing of this story is honestly so good. Every chapter just flows perfectly into the next and keeps me hooked.

  2. Sign Bet Chapter 35
I am actually wheezing at Victor’s immediate, cat-like panic the second Juno mentioned bringing Adrian to the game. He was acting so incredibly smug and confident about his guaranteed victory, but the mere thought of another guy going with her completely threw him off. It is so funny how transparent he is about wanting her all to himself.
  3. Sign Bet Chapter 36
I am actually wheezing at Juno dramatically raising her arms like a stage performer to convince those occult nerds that their cursed juice had “ominous spiritual energy” inside it. She literally saved them from severe food poisoning by making up a whole Level-One classified secret on the spot. Her inner monologue about them being better off getting bitten by a radioactive spider was absolute peak comedy.
