“A week… war, then.”

Duke Schneider’s intentions were painfully obvious. He knew full well that Hughgray Ulphaz would never hand over his people to the enemy. The deadline was merely an excuse—he needed a pretext for war to seize the mountain, which had belonged to neither side.

The burned mountain, frequent provocations and skirmishes, the child’s death, and even the declaration of war.

“He’s been preparing for a long time.”

From the start, the arson, the provocations—and perhaps even the child’s death—were all part of Schneider’s plan to take the mountain.

The mountain… It had originally been unclaimed land. Yet why Schneider suddenly risked war, breaking centuries of agreement to seize it, remained unclear.

But with investigation, the reason would soon be uncovered. Still, he had only a week—within that time, he had to finish his inquiry and uncover the hidden motive.

Hughgray ground his teeth in frustration.

A week! That meant being stuck in this border region for an entire week! Which also meant he wouldn’t see Chloe for seven whole days—and that damned lion bastard would have that much more time to bother her.

At least there was one piece of good news: that bastard had returned to Lord Borghen’s castle. He’d learned this from a swift messenger he’d sent ahead to Borghen before Chloe. If that man had still been at Chloe’s house in the forest, he might have had to leave this place in Joyce’s hands and rush straight to Borghen.

Still… a week.

Even if Traskan wasn’t clinging to Chloe, it was far too long. He had to wrap up matters here as quickly as possible.

Guilt over Klein, sorrow at having to part from His Grace, and sadness mixed with disgust at her own selfishness—thinking of Klein while simultaneously missing the Duke. These tangled emotions filled Chloe’s body with tears, yet she never cried during the day. Mother would be uncomfortable. But every night, she buried herself under the covers and wept, then avoided her mother’s gaze each morning with puffy eyes.

Fortunately, Mother pretended not to notice her swollen face. She hadn’t even told her not to see the Duke again since that day. It seemed she was simply waiting for Chloe to make the decision to part from him on her own.
