The elderly couple quickly clamped their lips shut after seeing Chloe flare up.

“How do you two know that I’m a tiger beastkin and that he’s a wolf beastkin? Just who are you?”

At Chloe’s question, the elderly couple exchanged a gentle smile.

“Since you’ve revealed yourself as a tiger beastkin, we’ll tell you what we do. You might become our customer after all.”

They were merchants who, for generations, had crafted various medicines specifically for beastkin. In eras when beastkin were abundant, they’d openly run thriving businesses, but as beastkin dwindled, so too had their numbers. This elderly couple claimed to be descendants of one of the few remaining families in this trade.

Though the number of beastkin had decreased, most of them belonged to the ruling class and were extremely wealthy, so the couple had long supplied them with necessary medicines and suppressants. They lamented that their secret manufacturing techniques had been passed down in secrecy, but since they had no children, there would be no heir to inherit their craft.

They explained they only manufactured the medicines, while sales were handled through separate middlemen. Thanks to this secret source of income, they could keep operating the inn even without guests. Indeed, they’d built the inn in such a remote location precisely to facilitate medicine production.

They even revealed that the inn’s basement served as their laboratory. They added that even if they disclosed the secret of the lab, without revealing their actual recipes, no one could ever uncover anything—and ended by saying they hoped she’d consider becoming a valued customer.

“Our dogs and cats always hide whenever you come by, young lady. They’re used to mid-tier carnivorous beastkin, so we found it odd they’d act so nervous. That made us think you must be at least lion or tiger level—but since you didn’t seem imperial, we figured you were either a tiger or, at the very least, a wolf.”

Chloe couldn’t find words to reply. It felt as though she’d accidentally glimpsed into the hidden underworld of beastkin.

The suppressant her mother had obtained must have been made by people like them. They surely kept their secret recipes entirely to themselves, never sharing them even with beastkin families, and earned huge profits through this monopoly.

Just what kinds of medicines did they actually make?

“Oh! Wait—could it be that you gave something to me that night as well?”

Chloe asked suddenly, struck by realization. Her body that night had clearly been far from normal.
