“Chloe, why are you sorry? Don’t say things like that.”
Charlotte finally pulled her away from her embrace as she spoke. Though she instantly wiped away her tears, Chloe felt as if she were seeing her mother cry for the first time.
“It’s absolutely not your fault. Never, ever say you’re sorry, understand? If you’d stepped forward to protect your brother, I would’ve lost you too. You have no idea how fortunate, how grateful I am that you’re still alive like this. If something had happened to you as well, I couldn’t have gone on living.”
“…Hic.”
Despite her mother’s words, Chloe’s tears spilled over anew, overwhelmed by the memory of her brother’s face that day—a memory far too cruel to bear.
“Chloe, don’t cry anymore. Let’s go inside now. Tell me everything that’s happened while I was bedridden.”
Charlotte wiped Chloe’s tears and gently tugged her by the hand.
“Yes.”
Chloe wiped her tears with her free hand and walked into the house, still held by her mother.
Though Charlotte seemed to have already heard the gist of Chloe’s situation from Carcus, Chloe still recounted all sorts of details—how she’d ended up dressing as a boy and what she’d done.
“You’ve really suffered so much. But never again—nothing like this will ever happen again. I’ll repay the debt to the Duke’s household first thing tomorrow. You’ll never need to go back there again. The thought of you doing such work… Do you even know how utterly devastated I was when I first heard?”
