It was one of those days when Seo Yeon’s mother was frantically searching for a marriage candidate for her daughter.

Her mother, who had come to meet Seo Yeon after work, grabbed her hand and said, “We’ve found your fiancé.”

It was, by far, the brightest expression Seo Yeon had seen on her mother’s face in nearly a year. Curious about who could possibly make her mother this happy, Seo Yeon waited for the answer—and her mother, wearing a gentle smile, asked,

“Aren’t you curious who it is?”

“Yes. Who is it?”

Seo Yeon nodded, thinking to herself:

Apparently, this time her mother had finally found a man who met all her criteria.

Seo Yeon was a valuable asset on the marriage market—excellent “merchandise” priced high—and had just entered the ideal age for marriage.

Over the past few months, how many men had she been introduced to? Yet in all those meetings, she had never once seen her mother look this satisfied.

It was, after all, a typical arranged marriage—and since there was no escaping it regardless of who the partner turned out to be, there was no reason to be surprised.

Thinking this way helped her steel herself, making the situation somewhat bearable.

“Tae Sung Joon of HanKyoung Group.”

However, the moment she heard the name of her prospective fiancé, Seo Yeon’s mouth fell slightly open, shattering her earlier resolve. Tae Sung Joon? *That* Tae Sung Joon…?

“He was the one who reached out first.”

Tae Sung Joon was the grandson of HanKyoung Group, Korea’s most prominent conglomerate—and the most likely heir to its leadership.

Though she forced a composed smile to hide her shock in front of her mother, the weight of his name overwhelmed her, making it difficult to act naturally.

“He’d be a solid pillar of support for both you and your older brother. Truly, this is excellent news—don’t you agree?”

Indeed. With HanKyoung Group behind him, he would undoubtedly provide a strong foundation when her brother—already a nationally beloved prosecutor—entered politics.

Her brother had long declared, almost as a mantra, that his ultimate goal was Yeouido, and their parents had always supported his ambitions.

Right. To her parents and her brother, Sung Jun was the perfect match.

But when she asked herself whether *she* was truly happy about this arrangement, the answer was a clear “No.” After all, the higher the position, the heavier the responsibilities—and she couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling that this match was simply too overwhelming.

On the day of the meeting,

Seo Yeon arrived early at the hotel and waited for Sung Jun. It was, reputedly, the most expensive hotel in Korea. How much time passed, she wasn’t sure—

“Ms. Han Seo Yeon?”

Seo Yeon looked up at the low, smooth voice.

Standing before her was a strikingly handsome man—so finely chiseled he looked like a carefully sculpted work of art—gazing intently at her.

Even standing still, his presence was overpowering. That was her immediate thought upon seeing him for the first time. Sung Jun lifted his wrist and glanced briefly at his watch.

“You arrived earlier than our appointment time.”

He tilted his head slightly, looking down at her, and asked,

“Could I possibly have mistaken the scheduled time?”

Seo Yeon shook her head, omitting the fact that she’d arrived early simply because enduring her mother’s repeated pleas to “make this meeting work” was far more stressful than sitting alone at the venue.

“No, I did arrive early.”

At her reply, Sung Jun extended his hand.

“I see. I’m Tae Sung Joon.”

Seo Yeon cautiously took his hand. His large, masculine hand firmly enveloped hers.

Without releasing her hand, Sung Jun continued,

“It’s been a while since we last met.”

Seo Yeon’s eyes widened.

“Six months ago—you went to Busan, didn’t you?”

“Yes. I held a piano concert there.”

“I was at that venue.”

“How…?”

His smirk revealed that her flustered reaction was precisely what he’d expected.

“I happened to be in Busan for a business meeting, and when I remembered there was a concert going on, I decided to drop by—the conductor happened to be my school alumnus.”

Enough time had passed, yet Sung Jun still hadn’t let go of Seo Yeon’s hand—instead, he kept holding it, staring intently into her eyes, with no sign of releasing it.

“I see.”

For some reason, Seo Yeon’s heart began to race. She couldn’t tell whether it was due to his persistent gaze—radiating both grace and sensuality—or the sheer size of his hand still firmly clasping hers.

She had never met someone who stared so unblinkingly into another’s eyes—and certainly never a man who held her hand and refused to let go.

It was Seo Yeon who finally pulled her hand away discreetly and stepped back first.

She feared that if he held on any longer, her nerves would shatter—and her heart might burst. Sung Jun watched her for a moment, then calmly took his seat.

Feeling oddly as if *she* had been the one to reject *him*, Seo Yeon was flustered—and when a familiar melody drifted into her ears, she looked at Sung Jun and asked,

“Do you like Chopin?”

“I always enjoy Chopin.”

Though her question had only been meant to ease the awkward atmosphere, Sung Jun smoothly picked up the topic and led the conversation toward music—a subject naturally familiar and enjoyable for Seo Yeon, a piano major.

‘I was worried about what to talk about…’

The discussion flowed from Chopin to Mozart, and then to Beethoven—when suddenly, Sung Jun glanced around and asked,

“Have you ever visited this hotel before? Perhaps for other matchmaking meetings?”

Seo Yeon sensed immediately: he already knew—and was testing her. She stared back at him, silently demanding an explanation. Sung Jun smiled and replied,

“The hotel’s managing director is also my school alumnus.”

She couldn’t tell whether he was joking or telling the truth.

Given his position, he likely gathered thorough information about his prospective partner before making contact—so it was probably the former. Yet even if it was merely a lighthearted jest, in Tae Sung Joon’s style, it still left Seo Yeon deeply unsettled.

The idea that she had met other men in this very place nagged at her. Though Sung Jun had chosen today’s time and venue, she couldn’t shake the uncomfortable feeling of having acted shamelessly.

“You’ve attended several matchmaking meetings in a short span of time. Is there a particular reason you’re in such a rush to marry?”

“It’s because of my age. They say this is the prime time for marriage.”

Sung Jun frowned, as if he’d just heard something absurd—and then asked, puzzled,

“But Ms. Seo Yeon, you’re far too young to be rushing into marriage.”

Twenty-four. Indeed, even Seo Yeon thought herself young. Yet her parents believed differently—they wanted her to marry while she was still at her youngest and most beautiful, to secure a beneficial alliance for her brother.

They were the ones who insisted on the matchmaking meetings—and they were also the ones who rejected unsuitable candidates.

Unwilling to explain her complicated family situation to a man she’d just met, Seo Yeon simply offered a brief, polite smile instead.

“My mother told me HanKyoung Group made the first contact. May I ask—why me, specifically?”

Surprised by her question, Sung Jun set down his wine glass and quietly studied her. After a moment of contemplation, he answered candidly,

“Ms. Seo Yeon, you possess the most ideal qualifications for the daughter-in-law my grandfather has in mind.”

“Oh.”

“I’ve agreed to obediently follow his wishes until I complete the proper succession process and officially become the heir. That’s why I need someone who meets Han Seo Yeon’s criteria.”

“…”

“Was I too blunt?”

A bitter smile appeared on Seo Yeon’s face.

“Yes.”

But she quickly composed herself and replied in a calm tone,

“Actually, I prefer honesty. I didn’t come here expecting to hear absurd lines like ‘I fell for you at first sight’ or ‘you’re my ideal type.’”

“…”

The conversation abruptly halted. Puzzled, Seo Yeon studied his expression. Sung Jun was gazing at her with a completely neutral face.

When he smiled—lifting the corners of his lips—he was dazzlingly charming; now, with no expression at all, he looked strikingly cold and aloof. The gentleness from moments earlier had vanished entirely.

For some reason, Seo Yeon felt this icy, detached demeanor was his true face. Whether smiling or expressionless, the overwhelming pressure he exuded remained suffocating.

After a pause, Sung Jun, still staring intently at her, lifted the corners of his mouth again.

“I’ll interpret this as you being satisfied with my conditions—hence your presence here today.”

It was an entirely self-serving interpretation—but she couldn’t deny it. And once more, he launched another difficult question.

“Do you have any expectations for your future husband?”

Seo Yeon was taken aback. What kind of question was this?

“I’ve never really thought about it specifically.”

The marriage had been driven entirely by her family’s wishes—a duty she couldn’t avoid, not something she anticipated with joy—so she’d never given it much thought. After a brief pause, Sung Jun asked,

“Then let me rephrase: After marriage, how would you like to live your life, Ms. Seo Yeon?”

She couldn’t just say “I don’t know” again.

“Ordinarily.”

She left out the part about wanting the ordinary happiness most people enjoyed—but it was her honest answer.

“I’d like to live an ordinary life.”

Sung Jun tilted his chin slightly to the side, slowly inclining his head as he said,

“But as the granddaughter-in-law of HanKyoung Group, an ordinary life might be impossible.”

“That’s true.”

Indeed it was—and that was precisely why she’d felt uneasy, believing this match was far beyond what she deserved. But now, her perspective had shifted slightly.

Since the marriage was unavoidable anyway, it seemed better to meet her parents’ expectations—and marry a man as attractive as Sung Jun, who’d even admitted openly that he liked her qualifications.

So Seo Yeon mustered her courage and decided to speak honestly as well.

“I’d like you not to betray me.”

“…?”

“You just asked what kind of husband I wanted, didn’t you?”

“‘Don’t betray me’—that’s all you wish for?”

Sung Jun responded with disbelief at her answer.

“It might not be easy to uphold. But if my husband proves trustworthy and never betrays me, then I, too, won’t be the one to abandon the person who’s become my family first.”

After saying this, Seo Yeon’s expression turned abruptly regretful.

She couldn’t believe what she’d just blurted out to a man she’d only just met—swept up by the mood. Sung Jun held her gaze for a long while before lowering his eyes. His focus had landed on her hand.

“Why are you looking at me like that?”

Flustered, Seo Yeon covered her hand with her other hand and asked. Even as she questioned him, his gaze remained fixed on her hand as he replied,

“I need to determine your ring size.”

“What?”

With that, Sung Jun met her eyes once more and said,

“Next time we meet, I’ll bring a ring—custom-fitted, the most expensive and dazzling one suited for you, Ms. Seo Yeon.”

His gaze was so intensely direct that Seo Yeon’s eyes trembled involuntarily.
