For a while, Seo Yeon clutched her late husband’s belongings—still bearing the traces of his touch—and wept bitterly, until she noticed the screen of her phone lighting up with missed calls.

Her older brother, her mother, and her in-laws had each taken turns calling Seo Yeon, leaving behind a trail of increasingly elaborate voicemails.

They had openly shown interest in the enormous inheritance she stood to receive.

Though their words sounded refined and kind on the surface, their true intentions were glaringly obvious—especially when contrasted against their usual dismissive attitude toward her. Seo Yeon murmured absentmindedly,

“Really, just as Mr. Sung Jun said…”

Ironically, however, that very inheritance had granted her the strength to protect herself—a development Sung Jun himself had foreseen.

The final message came from Sung Jun’s secretary. Seo Yeon slowly read it.

—Madam, until the inheritance matter is resolved, please refrain from contacting or meeting with anyone from the Han Kyung Family. We cannot predict what they might do, so please stay vigilant. Where are you now? The attorney and I will head your way shortly.

Despite the fact that he himself was part of HanKyoung Group.

But before being a member of HanKyoung Group, he had been Sung Jun’s friend—and practically family. Thus, this man’s kindness originated from Sung Jun. The thought made her chest tighten once more.

—I’ll come to you instead.

With hands trembling faintly, Seo Yeon gripped the ultrasound image tightly, pressed it tenderly against her chest for a moment, then carefully placed it into her bag.

She left home to head to the meeting spot. Yet her hands shook so badly that driving was simply out of the question.

With no other choice, she decided to take public transportation.

As she waited for the bus, painful thoughts kept swirling in her head—thoughts she desperately wanted to silence.

The despair and guilt she had felt after losing the child she had cherished so deeply.

Resentment toward her husband, who had coldly insisted she forget the lost baby as quickly as possible, claiming it was an unavoidable loss.

And even his genuine feelings, which she had only belatedly come to understand.

Had she realized just a little sooner, she wouldn’t have spent her days resenting her husband. She might even have tried, at least, to change their dreadful marriage.

The more she thought about it, the more her mind churned with confusion. And as tardy regret finally dawned on her, her eyes grew hot once again.

“Haah…”

It was then—just as Seo Yeon placed a hand on her chest and exhaled a ragged breath—that she sensed someone’s gaze nearby.

She turned her head.

A boy—no older than a high school student—was staring straight at her. When she met his gaze, puzzled, he quickly snapped his eyes forward again.

Then, even though the traffic signal hadn’t changed yet, he stepped toward the road, where cars raced by at frightening speed. Startled, Seo Yeon instinctively reached out and grabbed the boy’s arm.

“Be careful!”

The boy froze the moment Seo Yeon seized him. Then he turned his head, stared at her with wide eyes, and faintly licked his dry lips.

“Um… Were you crying?”

Taken aback by his bewildering reaction, Seo Yeon blurted out,

“Is whether I’m crying or not really what matters right now? You should’ve been more careful! You nearly got into a serious accident!”

After yelling in frustration, Seo Yeon sighed upon seeing how flustered and helplessly bewildered the boy looked.

Just a few days earlier, her husband had died in a traffic accident.

He had been, to her knowledge, the healthiest and strongest man she knew.

Perhaps that was why—even though it wasn’t truly necessary—she had reacted so sensitively, without even realizing it.

Even if they were complete strangers, she didn’t want to witness someone meeting their end right before her eyes.

Still, she had no right to scold this boy. Almost instantly, guilt settled heavily in her chest.

After sorting through her tangled emotions, Seo Yeon spoke in a calm voice.

“I’m sorry for suddenly raising my voice. I was just worried something might happen to you.”

The boy, who had been staring at her in surprise, vigorously waved his arms.

“No need to apologize—I should actually thank you for worrying about me. Seriously.”

Then, as if to prove his sincerity, he broke into a bright, radiant smile—so dazzling it momentarily pushed her sorrow and despair to the background. Why did she suddenly feel this way?

While she was lost in thought, the boy tilted his head curiously and asked,

“Hey, noona—why were you crying earlier? Did something happen?”

Seo Yeon glanced at the traffic light, which had now changed.

Earlier, he’d tried to cross before the signal turned, but now—despite the green light—he seemed in no hurry to move.

Instead, just as before, he was intensely staring at her, as if he absolutely needed to hear her answer.

Though she was certain she’d never seen him before, why did he feel so strangely familiar?

Could it be that she’d met him before—but simply forgotten?

As Seo Yeon remained lost in thought, the overly inquisitive boy nudged her again.

“If you tell me, maybe I can help you find a solution.”

Chapter 115 Chapter 114

By now, Seo Yeon was convinced the boy standing before her was quite an unusual person.

Yet, oddly, she didn’t dislike him at all.

While she hesitated, the boy urged her once more to confide in him.

She wasn’t talkative by nature, nor did she usually enjoy sharing her own stories.

Yet—was it because of his sunlike, radiant smile? Or simply because she was utterly exhausted?

Somehow, Seo Yeon found herself blurting out her innermost feelings.

“There’s something I deeply regret.”

“Something you regret? What is it?”

Seo Yeon paused for a moment in thought, then answered honestly,

“There was someone incredibly important in my life—but I never once expressed how I truly felt.”

“If they were that important, why didn’t you say anything?”

Why, indeed? Eyes downcast, Seo Yeon began to speak.

“He was always so busy—I rarely even got to see him. And frankly, he had every reason to dislike me.”

“…”

“I assumed he hated me.”

“…Was it a misunderstanding?”

“I don’t know. I was certain he hated me… Certain he resented me… Now I can’t tell what’s true anymore. I want to meet him and ask—but I can’t.”

“Why not?”

“Because he’s dead.”

“…”

“He was someone full of dreams and ambitions—someone who worked incredibly hard to live fully… He wasn’t supposed to go like this… He wasn’t meant to leave… It feels so unfair. Honestly, I wish I’d died in his place instead.”

The boy grimaced as though he’d just heard something horrifying.

“What? Why—why would you say something so frightening!”

Seo Yeon realized she’d just blurted out something terrible to a complete stranger—and burdened him with it. Just as she opened her mouth to correct herself, the boy spoke first.

“You’re still young, noona—and you still have so many opportunities ahead! Just let go of those who’ve left, and start fresh! Happily! Joyfully!”

He spoke with firm conviction, as if desperately wanting her to embrace a new beginning.

Let go of everything and live happily?

Her husband—the man she’d never grown close to in life, the difficult man with whom she’d constantly argued whenever they shared the same space. Perhaps, as the boy suggested, forgetting him entirely might lift her out of sorrow. Yet Seo Yeon shook her head and replied quietly,

“I don’t think I’ll ever forget him.”

“…”

The boy gazed at her with a crestfallen expression, then after a moment gave a small, resigned smile.

“Honestly, I expected you to say that.”

Then, after studying her face for a brief moment, he said,

“How about going back to the very beginning—and starting over completely?”

In that instant, the world seemed to freeze—the movement of people slowed, then stopped entirely.

The blinking traffic signal, pedestrians mid-crossing, even the clouds drifting lazily overhead—all ceased.

Seo Yeon couldn’t believe what she was seeing—surely this was just a momentary hallucination. Yet no matter how much time passed, the world remained utterly still.

Was I dreaming?

Or had I collapsed from exhaustion, having cried too much without realizing it?

Where did the dream end—and reality begin?

As she struggled with this confusion, the boy—who had been watching her intently—suddenly grasped her hand tightly.

“This time, you’ll be happy.”

“What do you…?”

Seo Yeon’s eyes widened. A white light enveloped her—and in the next moment, utter darkness descended. The boy, whose hand had unmistakably been holding hers just moments before, vanished instantly. So it really had been a dream, after all?

Hoping to wake from it, Seo Yeon closed her eyes tightly.

At that very moment—an eerie, familiar voice echoed in her ears.

“Han Seo Yeon.”

A voice she knew all too well—yet one she should never have heard again. Struggling to open her eyes, Seo Yeon turned toward the source of the voice.

“Mr. Sung Jun?”

Impossible. Yet there he stood—her husband. The man who had always treated her like a burdensome weight on his shoulders. The man who had always prioritized work over family. Yet in his final moments, the man who had worried about her safety more than anyone else—Tae Sung Joon.

“Awake now?”

Seo Yeon didn’t answer. Or rather—she missed the chance to reply.

Before she could speak, Sung Jun frowned slightly and pressed his hand against her forehead. Something seemed to displease him—the sharp slant of his eyes narrowed further. Fascinated simply by seeing him again (even in a dream), Seo Yeon studied every minute expression on his face.

“I did tell you to go to the hospital. Now you’ve let your illness worsen. Honestly, there are many ways to exhaust a person.”

“Why are you here?”

“My house—where else would I be?”

“That’s not what I meant…”

“Not what you meant?”

“…You’re dead.”

“What?”

“…We’ve already held the funeral.”

At her words, all expression vanished from Sung Jun’s face. He stared at her wordlessly for a moment, then sighed deeply. With a look that plainly said *Snap out of it*, he spoke.

“You had a dream?”

“…”

“Right. It was just a dream.”

A dream? That was all? Though she briefly wondered if he might be right, Seo Yeon knew the experiences she’d just undergone couldn’t possibly have been mere dreams.

Utterly baffled, she pressed her lips tightly together. Sung Jun hesitated slightly at the sight of her troubled expression.

“I only have a moment—I need to leave soon. I’ll take you to the hospital, so stay put and lie down.”

But his tone swiftly reverted to its characteristic cool detachment.

Seo Yeon clenched her faintly trembling hands tightly.

So—was she still dreaming, after all? When exactly had the dream begun—and reality ended? She felt completely disoriented.

Then, suddenly, her gaze fell upon her own fingers.

There, resting exactly where it belonged, was her wedding ring—the very ring she’d lost years ago, which had caused her prolonged heartache.
