And the next day, as he had said, Sung Jun gifted Seo Yeon the most expensive and elaborate ring among those she had seen.

Right now, that ring sat upon her finger. Seo Yeon raised her hand and gazed at it.

‘I’m certain I lost it…… How did it end up here……?’

Seated in the passenger seat, lost in thought as she examined the ring, Seo Yeon asked,

“Why did you give me such an extravagant and expensive ring?”

Immediately afterward, she tensed up—it felt as though she were speaking to a ghost. Just then, Sung Jun stopped the car at a traffic signal and turned to look at her. Seo Yeon opened her mouth again.

“Even considering it’s a wedding ring, it seems excessively ornate.”

His faintly double-lidded eyes narrowed slightly, as if scrutinizing her true intentions.

Seeing that vivid expression up close made it feel increasingly as though she were truly conversing with a living Sung Jun, and as time passed, Seo Yeon grew more and more confused—perhaps even anxious. After a brief silence, Sung Jun finally spoke.

“To properly fetch a princess, at the very least this much is necessary.”

It was the most absurd joke she had ever heard in her life. Seo Yeon’s eyes widened in shock.

“Are you…… teasing me right now?”

“No way.”

His expression, fixed firmly on hers, showed no trace of jest—as if to confirm he wasn’t lying.

Though Sung Jun’s serious demeanor made her even more flustered, she recalled having heard something similar before their marriage.

At their first meeting, he had stated that marrying her was necessary:

To seize control over Han Kyung Family’s interests, which were being directed according to Chairman Emeritus Tae Seok Hyun’s wishes, and to secure a favorable position in the succession plans for the next generation of leadership. Unfortunately, things hadn’t gone his way.

Most likely, this statement was made in that same context.

The marriage had been arranged for the sake of their respective circumstances and mutual benefits.

At first, her in-laws had treated her very respectfully, but after her brother’s betrayal caused Han Kyung to suffer disgrace, they came to regard her as an enemy. It was only natural—after all, the entire scandal had been fabricated out of one man’s desperate ambition for success.

Only one person, her husband’s grandfather, had maintained the same attitude throughout: still strict and intimidating, yet never discriminatory toward Seo Yeon.

She had found comfort, even relief, in that measured neutrality—and thus, when he suddenly passed away due to illness, Seo Yeon had been more shocked than anyone else.

“Is Grandfather doing well? Is he in good health?”

Her voice trembled faintly. For some reason, she feared hearing the answer.

“You saw him at the main house a week ago, so you already know. He’s not just vigorous—he’s positively brimming with energy. He’s probably healthier than either of us.”

“……!”

Startled, Seo Yeon rummaged through her bag for her phone and checked the date on the screen.

July 1, 2020.

Her eyes quivered violently.

If this wasn’t a dream—if this truly wasn’t a delusion—then she had returned to the past, to a time before Sung Jun’s death, and moreover, retained all her memories from the future.

How could such a thing be possible?

“We’re here. Get out.”

“…….”

“What are you waiting for? Aren’t you getting out? Don’t you need to unbuckle your seatbelt?”

“Oh, no, it’s fine. I’ll do it myself.”

As she hastily released her seatbelt, a question formed in her mind: if she really had traveled back in time, she should recall this moment—but no matter how hard she tried, nothing came to mind.

After all, Sung Jun had been the type who threw himself into work as if driven mad by his inability to stay late at the office, let alone leave early.

Seo Yeon lifted her head again and looked at Sung Jun, then asked, puzzled,

“Isn’t this the time you’re supposed to be at the office? How did you get here?”

“The company called, saying you’d collapsed.”

“…….”

“I told you yesterday to go to the hospital. Why stubbornly endure and waste other people’s time like this? If there’s a talent for worsening one’s own illness, you’ve certainly mastered it. You’re not even a child.”

His tone was humiliating, his gaze sharp and icy—exactly as she remembered her husband from the past. Back then, each of his cold remarks had wounded her deeply.

Not wanting to show how hurt she was, she gradually grew uncomfortable speaking with him, and in her desire to avoid conflict, she spoke less and less over time—until, shortly before deciding to divorce, there were days when she didn’t utter a single word to him.

And yet now, ironically, she found comfort in his prickly tone—it served as proof he was truly alive.

“You’re right—it was my fault for being sick and not going to the hospital. As an adult, I should’ve managed my own condition, and I failed. I’m sorry. Still, please don’t speak so harshly.”

“What?”

“Every time you talk like that, I’m left unsure how to respond. Conversations with you always leave me frustrated—and sometimes even angry.”

“…….”

They say people change after facing great hardship—and apparently, it was true.

Chapter 115 Chapter 114

After all, she was saying things to Sung Jun now that her past self would never have dared to utter.

As if to confirm this, a faint glimmer of shock flickered in Sung Jun’s eyes as he looked at her.

In five years of marriage, Seo Yeon had never once seen Sung Jun look this flustered. No—even his posture had never wavered before. He was the kind of man who sat upright and composed even when heavily intoxicated.

Fascinated by the sight of him thrown off balance, Seo Yeon stared at him for a long while, then finally turned her head away.

“I’ll get out.”

Frowning, Sung Jun followed her out of the car.

Glancing around the silent hospital parking lot, Seo Yeon clasped her hands together. It certainly didn’t feel like a dream, and though this unbelievable situation seemed real, she still lacked full certainty.

If they parted now and she woke from this dream, she’d lose, pointlessly, the chance to talk with Sung Jun.

Even if it *was* a dream, she wanted to speak with him just a little longer—to hear his voice, to understand his thoughts.

“Are you heading straight back to the office?”

“Yes. I have a meeting scheduled in one hour.”

“Then let’s go up together.”

“What?”

“I don’t want to go alone. You said you have about an hour free—just spend thirty minutes with me.”

“…….”

“Do you dislike it because it feels like a waste of time?”

A deep crease formed between Sung Jun’s brows. Maybe she shouldn’t have added that last part—it might have unintentionally sounded sarcastic, contrary to her intent.

She regretted the remark, feeling he found her tone grating, but there was nothing she could do—after all, she knew his personality and tendencies all too well.

He valued time above all else, and he devoted nearly every moment of it to work. Conversations with her had always ranked dead last among his choices.

So what *could* she say to keep him from refusing? Should she throw a fit and claim she was unwell?

Though she genuinely felt dizzy and feverish, complaining about it wouldn’t be a lie—yet for some reason, she couldn’t bring herself to do it.

Then what should she do?

Just as Seo Yeon wrestled with this dilemma, Sung Jun’s voice came from nearby.

“What are you waiting for? You said you’d come together, didn’t you?”

“Oh.”

He gestured toward the elevator with his eyes—and, contrary to her expectation of refusal, Sung Jun walked ahead.

Though she had proposed it herself, Seo Yeon was secretly startled that he so readily agreed, and she carefully slipped into the elevator, trying not to show it.

Her gaze fixed firmly on him.

His high nose bridge, sharply chiseled jawline, and cool eyes.

Dressed impeccably in a tailored black suit, Sung Jun looked flawlessly elegant and perfect.

Surprised by her own thoughts, Seo Yeon raised her eyebrows.

During their pre-wedding formal dates, she had often found herself staring at her future husband, utterly entranced.

Ironically, while those dates were merely formalities for him—steps to smooth his path to power—they hadn’t been for her.

Remembering her past self’s naive, clumsy rush into love, she suddenly snapped back to her senses.

Flustered, Seo Yeon abruptly turned her head away

and once again donned her expressionless mask.

Noticing her movement, Sung Jun’s gaze settled on her.

Just moments ago she’d been secretly observing him, yet now she looked away with clear displeasure—leaving a sour, prickly feeling in a corner of his heart.

Sung Jun had received the call from the housekeeper informing him that Han Seo Yeon had collapsed sometime after lunch.

His wife had already looked unwell since the previous night.

Right after their marriage, the Han Kyung corruption scandal fabricated by Han Jung Hyuk had instantly shattered the position Sung Jun had painstakingly built within the group over several years, sending him plummeting to rock bottom. In an effort to recover, he’d thrown himself into a punishingly busy schedule—so much so that even mealtimes and sleep felt like wasted luxuries.

Normally, he would’ve simply sent someone to check on her condition and instructed them to take her to the hospital. But for some reason today, he’d felt compelled to confirm her state personally—so he postponed whatever meetings he could and stopped by home.

Yet her condition was worse than the housekeeper had described.

Her skin was pale, and her forehead burned like fire.

“Han Seo Yeon.”

Truth be told, he’d only intended to glance at her face before calling for help—but, without realizing it, he’d called out her full name. An odd, unsettling thought had crossed his mind: that she might never wake again.

“……Sung Jun?”

Was it due to her fever-induced daze? When she opened her eyes, she met his gaze directly, unlike her usual habit of avoiding his eyes. His wife, who had always hastily averted her eyes from his, was now staring intently at him—and it left him with an odd, unsettled feeling.

‘Am I being stifling?’

He’d scolded her precisely to avoid hearing the usual tedious excuses—that she was fine, that she could endure without visiting the hospital. Yet now, unexpectedly labeled “stifling” by his own wife, Sung Jun felt slightly aggrieved.

Side Story 5 Side Story 4

When scheming men desperately battle for her favor in the male harem

This one’s also on my reread list! The rivalry, scheming between the men in the imperial harem are just as intense and thrilling as in classic palace drama novels, where concubines fight to the death. Give it a read, girls! I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Synopsis:

“I am not worthy of her… but I still want to be by her side, even if only as a loyal dog…”

Those were the painful whispers of Yue Guanyi – the proud Crown Prince of the Great Qi, who was torn between deep love and a guilty conscience. Despite holding the supreme power of the Imperial Guard, he still could not forget the dark past when he was sold into a brothel.

Fate played a cruel twist when Qiu Shuzhi – a young female official who had just passed the imperial examinations with top honors – stepped into his life. She did not know that she was the one who had saved him from a tragic fate many years ago. And now, her heart was the target of pursuit for both Yue Guanyi and the powerful Empress Dowager Qin Qing.

While Yue Guanyi only dared to silently care for and protect the one he loved from afar, the  Empress Dowager Qin Qing openly expressed his feelings and did not hesitate to take advantage of his power to approach Qiu Shuzhi. The covert struggle between the two most powerful forces in the imperial court began…

Trigger warning: All men in this novel are yandere style.
