Melie’s eyes, fixed on the sink, sparkled with anxious anticipation.

Her mouth felt parched, and her heart burned as if it were turning to ash.

Melie watched as the long, white strip slowly turned gray from the tip, then turned her head away.

‘Anyway, I have to wait about five minutes.’

That’s what they’d said, precisely.

Melie paced back and forth in front of the sink, desperately trying to distract herself with pleasant thoughts.

Recently, at a gathering of parents from Jade’s academy class, everyone had praised Jade’s writing skills. The parents remarked that Jade’s vocabulary far surpassed that of other children their age and asked Melie about her secret to such education.

‘I didn’t do anything special.’

Melie stated the truth and cautiously observed the ladies’ expressions, for her words could be interpreted either as humility or arrogance, depending on the listener.

Fortunately, no one seemed offended—but neither did they believe her outright.

‘Come on, do tell us your secret method. Please?’

‘Yes, indeed. Considering how Duke Felton also showed exceptional talent from a young age, your family must certainly pass down a unique educational tradition through generations.’

But there really wasn’t any such thing.

Melie felt terribly awkward, yet at the same time relieved that her child had inherited only the best traits from his father.

Knowing just how brilliant Edric had been as a child, Melie couldn’t help but worry that Jade would constantly be compared to him.
