An awkward silence hung in the air.

Though she had never particularly liked opera, she now felt certain she would like it even less from now on.

Melie took a sip of the orange juice in her hand and stole a glance at the man beside her.

His sparse brown hair and stubborn-looking black eyes,

gazing at the stage with a disgruntled expression—as if to say, “Why spend so much money on something this boring?”—lingered briefly in Melie’s sight before she turned her head away again.

‘Of all the times…’

Melie sighed inwardly.

The late Duchess Eda had insisted on one final date together before leaving for the ducal estate, and Melie had readily agreed.

She’d been even happier upon learning their destination was the opera house.

Being brought by Eda to a place frequented by high society seemed proof enough of how dearly Eda cherished her.

She had even been cheerfully thinking she’d treat Eda to dinner with the emergency savings she’d carefully set aside.

“Pleasure to make your acquaintance, Miss Enwood.”

Sir Blair appeared out of nowhere.

With a look of great surprise, Eda Felton readily surrendered her right to date Melie to Sir Blair, declaring it must surely be fate.

Blair, now accompanying Melie, swept his eyes over her as though appraising the worth of a commodity. Melie found his gaze deeply unpleasant but couldn’t show it.

During the opera, he occasionally spoke to her.

“The seating here is absurdly spaced out. If it were me, I’d arrange the seats more densely to increase profits. What do you think, my lady?”

“That sounds… good.”

“Opera truly isn’t to my taste. The singing makes the dialogue unintelligible, and the gestures are far too exaggerated. I truly admire how nobles endure watching this.”

“…”

Melie fell silent for a long time, unsure how to respond.

Near the opera’s end, he complained once more.

“The free plays performed in the marketplace seem far more entertaining. Next time, I’ll take you there.”

“Yes…”

Melie gave an awkward smile and thought:

‘So there’s going to be a next time.’

The opera concluded as the heroine resolved to set off on a journey to find herself. The velvet curtain descended, briefly obscuring the stage, as the cast prepared for their final bows. But—

“Let’s go quickly. Watching any longer would be a waste of time.”

Sir Blair urged her.

Melie had no way to refuse.

She gathered her drink and hurried after Sir Blair, who strode briskly toward the exit.

Perhaps because he’d built his fortune and status from nothing in a harsh environment,

he appeared far too busy, as if every minute directly translated into money—a true businessman.

Still, he seemed preferable to those noblemen who, drowning in excess time and wealth, often indulged in reckless debauchery. Had it not been for what happened next, she surely would have thought well of him.

Because Sir Blair, who had left ahead of her, didn’t hold the sliding door open until she passed through, Melie collided with the door swinging toward her and spilled her drink all over her chest.

“Oh, no!”

Staring at the orange stain spreading like a map across her cream-colored blouse, Melie looked utterly dazed.

Sir Blair, however, remarked casually,

“Let’s go. I’ll buy you a new outfit at a nearby boutique.”

“…”

He likely believed this was considerate. Yet to Melie, it felt neither grateful nor comforting—only hurtful.

Suppressing her displeasure, Melie maintained her composure and offered her best manners to the end.

“I appreciate your concern, but I’m fine. I’ll just freshen up briefly in the restroom.”

She left and headed toward the nearest washroom.

Standing at the sink, Melie dampened a handkerchief she’d taken from her purse and began gently blotting the front of her blouse.

Though the handkerchief picked up the yellow stain, the fabric remained stubbornly yellow, showing no sign of fading.

Nothing seemed to go right.

She’d been forced to meet the very man she’d wished to avoid, and now her favorite blouse was ruined.

She longed to return home immediately—but…

‘Since it’s come to this, you’ll see the evening through with dinner together. Understood?’

The Duchess had said as much—and this man had nodded in agreement.

Huuu—

Melie let out a long sigh.

“Fine. Having dinner together isn’t so hard. At least it’ll be better than the performance.”

Reassuring herself, she stepped out the door.

[This is the timeline separator]

Contrary to Melie’s expectations, however, dining with Sir Blair proved even more agonizing than watching the opera together.

His improper use of cutlery wasn’t an issue.

Nor did it matter that he called for rum, claiming wine was too weak, and downed an entire bottle in one go.

His remark that women drinking was unsightly wasn’t particularly pleasant to hear—but at least he didn’t pressure her to drink, which was a relief.

What truly tormented Melie was enduring his tedious business anecdotes throughout the meal and his constant critiques of the food, always harping on cost-effectiveness.

Since Melie herself had recommended this restaurant, each of his complaints made her feel as though she ought to perform penance.

She couldn’t even tell whether the food was going into her mouth or her nose—but she finished it all anyway.

Otherwise, he’d surely scold her again about waste and how nobles clearly had no sense of money.

When she finally stepped out of his carriage upon arriving home, Melie felt a profound sense of liberation—as if released from long imprisonment.

Thus, when he hinted clearly at a future meeting, she accepted without resistance.

After all, as long as she’d ended this encounter, she could leave the next one to her future self.

But the peace of mind she gained from parting with Sir Blair lasted only the few minutes from the estate gate to the front door.

“Welcome back.”

Eda was waiting at the entrance.

“Did… you wait for me?”

Though Eda had always been kind and affectionate like a mother, she rarely came out to greet Melie—never even during Melie’s school days, when she returned home late from a distant boarding school.

Surely, Eda had come out only to ask how the impromptu meeting with Blair had gone.

Melie was certain of it.

“I was just about to take a short walk.”

“…”

“Would you care to join me?”

Eda offered kindly with a gentle smile—likely feeling it improper to question someone who’d just arrived. Melie calmly complied. After all, this conversation was inevitable.

The cool evening breeze soothed the lingering heat of late summer. The chirping of crickets spread softly like calming music.

They’d just passed the fountain, its cool streams radiating in all directions, having walked halfway around the garden, when the inevitable finally arrived.

“Well? How was it?”

“…”

Seeing Melie’s silence, Eda’s expression turned apologetic.

“Oh dear—it must’ve been unpleasant. It was my mistake. Meeting him there felt like fate, so I just… Forgive me, won’t you?”

Melie couldn’t bear to watch her kind guardian blame herself.

“No, Madam. I had a pleasant time. Sir Blair also seemed… like a good man.”

“Really?”

Eda’s eyes suddenly sparkled. Melie regretted her words immediately—but it was too late.

“Exactly! You never truly know someone until you meet them properly.”

“Well, yes, but…”

Eda didn’t even give Melie a chance to finish, continuing excitedly:

“He’s the sort of man who prospers in everything he touches—certainly capable of building a fine household. Your future is now wide open, Melie.”

Eda’s overly enthusiastic hope struck Melie as odd. Yet upon reflection, it made sense: Eda was probably just thrilled at the thought of sending off the girl she’d cherished like a daughter to a wealthy household.

“Now I can finally keep my promise to Jasmine.”

When Eda even brought up her mother, Melie could no longer deny her own suspicions—and found herself even less able to speak plainly.

‘I don’t need a smooth path. I have no intention of building a life with him.’

It felt almost sinful to wipe the joy from the face of someone who cared for her so dearly.

“I’ll meet him a few more times first.”

That was all Melie could manage.

“What’s the point of more meetings? If he’s a good man, you should seize the chance quickly. Overthinking leads to missed opportunities.”

Yet Eda showed no sign of relenting.

Did she think there’d be no one else to take Melie if not him?

A bitter feeling rose within her—but for now, leaving this place seemed the priority.

“Sir Blair said he’ll contact me within a few days, so I’ll consider marriage after that.”

Having successfully bought herself time, Melie bowed politely and took her leave.

As she climbed the stairs, she tried to recall exactly when Sir Blair had promised to contact her.

She’d been too relieved at the thought of parting ways with him to pay close attention to his final words.

‘Was it tomorrow… or the day after?’

One thing was certain: the deadline wasn’t far off.

Melie fervently hoped Sir Blair, as a successful businessman, would see through her own lackluster worth with clear-eyed judgment as she finally reached her quarters.

The room was dark, but warmth lingered in the air.

It seemed the fireplace had been lit just before her return.

“Whew…”

Exhausted, Melie wanted nothing more than to collapse onto the bed—but she held back.

She still needed to change clothes.

She dropped her handbag and unpinned her shawl. The beaded shawl rustled softly as it fell to the floor, revealing the cream blouse beneath.

Though too dim to see clearly, she knew an orange-stained map surely marred its center.

‘Will it even come out?’

It wouldn’t be easy—but she’d at least try tomorrow.

Right now, everything felt tiresome.

She undid the buttons, slipped the collar past her shoulders, and let the blouse glide gently over her bare skin onto the shawl.

Her navy skirt followed, sliding down her hips in the same manner.

Thus, clad only in a thin silk slip, she turned toward the bed—

when a figure slowly rose from the armchair.

“You’re late.”

Recognizing the voice, Melie’s eyes widened in shock.

Clutching her shoulders in alarm, she cried out,

“E-Edric?”

Regret With All Your Might (Completed Main Story)

Side Story 5 Side Story 4

When yandere male lead believes she loves him — but she never did

“How dare you!”

“How dare you make me love you, only to cast me aside as nothing more than a friend?!?

“I will never accept that.”

“I will never let you return to him.”

“Even if I have to burn myself to ashes.”

“Even if I must shatter my purity, my dignity, my very soul.”

“I will never let you escape me!”

This was the first novel that introduced me to the matriarchal genre. I’ve read it three times already!

At first, the male lead despised the female lead. Later, he misunderstood that she liked him, so he condescendingly and reluctantly reciprocated her feelings.

Then, he suddenly discovered that she was kind to everyone in the same way, and there was already someone she cherished in her heart, and that person was not him.

The male lead couldn’t believe it, he became angry and crazy. He was determined to capture her body and heart by any means necessary.

Synopsis:

Want to see how a green tea bitch male lead falls in love with the female lead?

Want to see how he flirtatiously pursues the female lead?

Want to see how he gets slapped in the face repeatedly?

The male lead is a green tea bitch, a poisonous lotus, jealous, ruthless, unscrupulous, with a venomous heart, and he’s also a delusional maniac.

The female lead is righteous, positive energy-filled, kind, a holy mother.

Let’s see how two people with extreme personalities come together~

You’re bound to regret it if you skip this novel. Read the review & spoiler to find out what you might be missing!
