It hadn’t even been an hour since the two had finished their confusing encounter.

“I came a bit early, Duke Felton?”

Rosalyn greeted him brightly through the carriage window, smiling cheerfully.

Although Edric was irritated by her visit arriving three hours earlier than scheduled, he couldn’t scold her.

After all, it was he himself who had told her she could visit anytime, regardless of the hour.

He set aside his confusion regarding Melie for the moment and resolved to greet his fiancée with dutiful attentiveness.

But upon seeing the familiar young man seated beside Rosalyn inside the open carriage door, his displeasure returned.

‘How shameless. Are these two a matched pair?’

As he exchanged a perfunctory handshake with Francis Adele, who had just stepped down from the carriage after Rosalyn, Edric thought to himself,

‘Surely she isn’t planning to pull them both into the same bed?’

Though he’d heard some nobles favored such arrangements, it certainly wasn’t to his taste.

“Francis really took a liking to your mansion,” Rosalyn explained sweetly, giving her reason for bringing him along. “He insisted on coming back to see it again, so I brought him with me. Is that alright, my lord?”

Though her coquettishness was grating, Edric was not so green as to show it openly.

“Of course. You’re welcome anytime—even without your sister.”

He readily agreed and instructed the butler to keep the mansion’s doors open to Francis Adele at any hour.

Francis expressed his gratitude with polite formality, and Edric personally escorted both guests to the drawing room.

Eda Felton happened to be out for the day.

Rosalyn lifted the teacup handed to her by a servant, took a sip, and looked genuinely surprised.

“The tea tastes wonderful! How do you manage such a smooth, non-astringent flavor?”

Instead of answering, Edric simply smiled.

‘It’s because the tea at your house tastes awful.’

He’d once tasted shockingly bad tea at Rosalyn’s home, and afterward had ordered the staff to memorize Melie’s tea recipe—just in case Rosalyn ever visited again, so he could demonstrate, ‘This is how tea should taste.’

“I’m glad it suits your palate, Rosalyn.”

Edric felt satisfied, as if his purpose had been fulfilled.

It was the only moment all morning that calmed the turmoil swirling in his mind.

But Rosalyn, as if stirring up settled dust, disturbed his fragile composure once more.

“By the way, where is Miss Melie? I’d love for her to join us…”

“…”

Right now, Edric had no desire to summon Melie into this gathering.

“Oh, what should I do? Melie isn’t feeling very well today. I’d prefer to let her rest in her room if possible.”

“I see.”

Rosalyn frowned sympathetically, her delicate features creasing with concern.

“Then may I just briefly go see Miss Melie? I’d like to look in on her myself and offer some comforting words.”

Her gentle, affectionate demeanor—combined with her beautiful looks—was precisely what made her beloved by everyone in high society, but to Edric at this moment, it was merely an insensitive act that reopened a barely concealed wound.

“I’d rather you didn’t.”

Edric reassured Rosalyn with a soft smile, carefully masking his irritation.

“The truth is, there’s currently an outbreak of fever in the capital. Melie doesn’t seem to have it, but just in case… if it truly were contagious fever and she passed it to you, both Melie and I would feel terrible.”

“But still…”

“Let’s just let Melie rest properly and enjoy a cozy chat among the three of us today. My mother will be back soon, and it would be nice to share a formal meal together.”

Rosalyn didn’t press further.

She, too, had heard rumors of measles spreading through the capital lately. While she might not mind other illnesses, catching measles—known to leave blemishes on the face—was unacceptable.

“Then please just tell Miss Melie that I was very worried about her.”

“Of course. Excuse me for a moment.”

Edric rose from his seat.

As he opened the drawing room door, the butler was waiting outside.

“Prepare a formal meal.”

He gave the instruction in a voice loud enough for everyone to hear. Then, lowering his voice so only the butler could catch it, he added a discreet command:

“Go tell Melie—stay in her room and don’t come out.”

Edric engaged Rosalyn in conversation, ranging from mundane daily topics to international affairs—truly a broad and varied discussion.

Chapter 115 Chapter 114

Francis mostly listened, occasionally joining in only to agree with Rosalyn’s opinions, yet his presence never felt superficial.

At least superficially, the three of them were enjoying a pleasant time together.

Yet not one of them broached the subject of marriage.

They all knew that once the former Duchess Felton, who had just stepped out, returned, marriage would be the sole topic of conversation—and none wanted to grow weary of it in advance.

Just as the smoothly flowing conversation began to gain momentum, Francis abruptly stood up.

“I’ll go smoke a cigar for a moment.”

“Smoke here. I’ll have one prepared for you.”

Edric offered, but Francis shook his head.

“That wouldn’t be proper. Rosalyn’s respiratory system is rather delicate.”

At those words, Edric’s gaze naturally turned toward Rosalyn.

She lowered her eyes with a bewitching smile—a confident expression unique to someone who knows they are adored.

It was infuriating. To be lectured by his fiancée’s paramour—he truly was in a ridiculous position.

Though displeased, Edric concealed it and apologized humbly.

“I’m ashamed I didn’t know my fiancée’s constitution. I’ll be more considerate in the future.”

“It’s alright. Just don’t overdo it. Truthfully, Fran is quite a heavy smoker.”

Rosalyn replied with calm nonchalance.

Meanwhile, Francis left the drawing room and headed toward a corridor he’d noticed earlier.

The corridor stretched from the west entrance of the mansion all the way to a granite pavilion at the garden’s end.

Unwilling to linger any longer between the betrothed couple, Francis gladly walked the entire length.

Upon reaching the pavilion with long strides, he leaned against the railing and took a deep drag from his cigar.

Hoo—

A sigh escaped his lips in the form of smoke, quickly dissipating into the air. His amber eyes, gazing at the fading plume, looked not just hazy—but utterly hollow.

‘I shouldn’t have come along.’

Regret surged over him like a rising tide.

It had been five years since he’d been formally adopted into the Adel family.

Three years since he’d secretly become Rosalyn’s lover.

For the past three years, his beloved sister had been his entire world—but not once had he considered tying her down.

He’d known the end from the very start, and had always been prepared to accept it.

When he’d first heard Rosalyn would marry into the Felton ducal house—renowned for its exceptional character and talent—he’d even felt happy for her.

If ever he thought he might hinder her happiness, he’d been ready to end things without hesitation. But—

‘Pleased to make your acquaintance, Prince Adel.’

On the day both families had gathered, Francis had felt no favorable impression of Edric at first sight—not nearly as good as rumors suggested.

Everything about him seemed too perfectly crafted, like a polished factory product, leaving Francis with an uneasy feeling.

Beneath that artificial uprightness, Francis sensed a cunning willingness to use any means for his own ends—yet carefully orchestrating situations so he’d still be praised as a noble, virtuous man.

With every meeting, Edric Felton’s enigmatic nature grew only more opaque.

Francis was certain: this man could never make Rosalyn happy.

‘What about someone else? What about Marquis Mikel, who proposed to you before? He seemed suitable enough.’

He’d subtly tried persuading Rosalyn, but to no avail.

‘I must become Duchess Felton.’

She firmly believed that title alone matched her rightful station.

In that moment, he regretted nothing more than having once told her, “That vanity of yours is part of who you are—and I love every part of you.”

Because of it, Francis himself would remain in her memory merely as a fleeting childhood lover—stabbing himself in the back with his own words.

Hoo—

He exhaled another long stream of cigar smoke and turned around.

Leaning his back against the railing, he stared at the grand main mansion.

“What an obscenely large place.”

The vulgar exclamation slipped out naturally.

The title “Empire’s foremost noble house with a long and storied history” wasn’t given without reason.

The precisely trimmed main building, wrapped in a faint blue glow, exuded an elegance money could never replicate.

Each meticulously aligned window shone with the same arrogant pride as the countless Felton lords who had lived and passed within—gazing down upon the world as if in judgment.

Even Francis, ever cynical, found himself bowing his head before the indomitable grandeur of old aristocracy—something upstarts could never imitate.

To become mistress of such a place was a privilege not just Rosalyn, but anyone would covet.

And to have as husband Edric Felton—the Empire’s greatest talent—who in their right mind would refuse such an opportunity?

‘Hidden true nature means nothing compared to visible beauty and audible virtue.’

Francis exhaled another pale plume of smoke with a bitter smile. Just then—

A sudden, vivid spark flared in his amber eyes, previously lost in a haze of smoke.

At one of the east-facing third-floor windows, somebody stood behind the glass.

Brunette hair. Petite frame.

Francis, blessed with sharp eyesight, instantly recognized her.

And with that same keen vision, he knew she was perfectly healthy.

‘Melie isn’t feeling very well today.’

Recalling Edric’s words, Francis’s eyes crinkled mischievously, and a knowing smile graced his lips.

He now had somewhere to stop by before returning to the drawing room.

He dropped his cigar to the ground, crushed it underfoot, and began walking slowly.
