You And I Live In Different Worlds (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 3
“Now, there aren’t many meals left where the three of us can eat together like this.”
During breakfast, Eda Felton, the Dowager Duchess, spoke.
Melie’s hands, which had been picking the flesh off a golden-brown grilled swordfish, stopped abruptly.
“Once Edric gets married, someone new will join us. Surely, the household will become livelier and better for it. A home should ideally be filled with husband, wife, and children—that’s the perfect family.”
At those words, Edric smiled gently and gave a light nod of agreement.
“Then we’ll be four, including Rosalyn.”
Eda shook her head with a tender smile.
“We’ll be four someday, perhaps—but it might take a few years to get there.”
“……”
“I plan to move down to the duchy right after your wedding.”
Melie had already heard this from Oz.
Edric’s eyes widened in surprise, as if hearing it for the first time, but then he chuckled softly.
“Mother, you really are something.”
“……”
“What do you mean? You should stay with us.”
“No, I can’t possibly do that. It’s time I enjoyed my own life. I have no intention of intruding on your cozy little marriage.”
“No one thinks you’d be intruding. Rosalyn even praised you endlessly, saying you’re far more comfortable to be around than Marchioness Adel.”
“What a dear child.”
Listening to the affectionate exchange between the Duchess and Edric about Rosalyn, Melie felt a pang of mixed emotions.
But this matter was no longer in her hands.
If he himself said it had nothing to do with her, what more could she possibly do?
“So please stay with us, Mother. All of us together.”
Edric urged again.
“No. That just wouldn’t be right.”
The Duchess was surprisingly firm.
“One must know when it’s time to leave. I’ve already made up my mind. Besides, the south stays mild even in deep winter—it’ll be good for my health.”
Suddenly, the Duchess’s and Melie’s eyes met midair.
Melie thought the Duchess’s gaze lingered on her longer than usual today.
“Before I go, I intend to find a match for you too. I even made a pinky promise with your mother, Jasmine Enwood.”
“You really don’t have to bother……”
Eda Felton didn’t give Melie a chance to refuse, continuing with an elegant smile.
“A suitable prospect has just appeared.”
“……”
“Sir Blair, the head of Blair Trading House, has shown interest in you. He saw you at Lady Cecilia’s birthday ball the other day and was quite taken with you.”
Melie didn’t recall seeing him at the ball, though she knew he was a self-made merchant wealthier than many nobles.
“He’s a bit older, admittedly, but he seems very upright and diligent. What do you think? Would you like to meet him?”
“……”
“If you’re not keen, you don’t have to. I merely thought he seemed like a good man and wanted to ask your opinion.”
It would’ve been easier if she’d just forced the issue.
But being offered such a gentle smile and a choice made it agonizingly difficult for Melie to say no.
After a brief hesitation, Melie made her decision.
Out of gratitude for the woman who had raised her without a hint of neglect, she felt she owed it to her to meet Sir Blair. She could decide about marriage later—after all, not every meeting led to marriage.
“Yes, I’ll do tha……”
“Just for now, Mother.”
A firm voice cut over Melie’s quiet reply.
“Give her some time to think.”
“……”
“She must be surprised. Right, Melie?”
Edric turned toward Melie as he spoke. Though his eyes curved softly, the blue irises within held deliberate resolve.

After helping clear the table, Melie climbed the stairs toward her quarters. After rounding two corners, she saw Edric leaning against the wall, arms crossed.
‘Huh? Was he waiting for me?’
As Melie approached with a puzzled tilt of her head, he uncrossed his arms and straightened up.
“Let’s talk for a moment.”
His calm expression was unchanged from usual. Clearly, he had something ‘to share’ with her.
He often confided in Melie about feelings unbecoming of his noble image—harsh mockery toward rivals, or the mental exhaustion from speaking words he didn’t truly feel.
And Melie would patiently listen until his emotional trash bin was emptied clean.
Assuming today would be no different, she quietly followed him as he led the way to her room.
As always, he plopped down onto her bed, leaning back against the sheets as comfortably as if it were his own. Melie stared at him blankly for a moment before sitting down on a chair at a distance.
She never sat on the same bed as him.
How old had they been? Ten, perhaps?
There had been just one time they’d shared a bed—bouncing together until they collapsed into laughter, delighting in the springy mattress beneath them. It had been a moment of pure, childlike innocence, shattered when their mother walked in carrying laundry.
Their mother had politely ushered Edric out, then scolded Melie severely.
“Just because you live under the same roof doesn’t mean you and the young master belong to the same world. His life is fundamentally different from ours.”
Her mother emphasized this truth until her dying day—and warned of the hardships that came from unequal marriages.
Though born a noblewoman of a well-known earl’s house, her mother had married a minor, unremarkable nobleman and suffered throughout her marriage.
Melie had no choice but to heed this advice born of personal pain.
“Will you meet him? That fellow Blair?”
Edric’s question broke Melie from her thoughts.
The word ‘fellow’ made it clear he didn’t think much of him.
Why?
Melie was briefly puzzled, then realized the obvious reason.
To someone raised as a true aristocrat to the bone, an upstart merchant would naturally seem distasteful.
“I don’t know yet. I haven’t decided.”
“Haven’t decided……”
Edric repeated her words, then said, “So you’re not ruling out meeting him.”
“If that’s the only option I’ve got, what choice do I have?”
“Why no choice? Just keep living here. Rosalyn already agreed.”
“……”
Melie shook her head.
“That doesn’t feel right.”
Though Edric’s expression seemed unusually somber, Melie didn’t change her mind.
“It’s just… I’d feel uncomfortable. Even if Miss Rosalyn likes me.”
It was true.
What good would it do to keep living in the house of the man she secretly loved?
Especially now that he was about to become someone else’s husband. Continuing to pine after another woman’s man simply wasn’t right.
Even if she couldn’t give up her feelings right away, she needed to put some distance between them.
“Then……”
Edric paused, thinking, then said,
“I’ll give you another option.”
“……?”
“I’ll get you a house in the capital. Live there.”
Melie was puzzled by Edric’s unexpectedly stubborn attitude.
Why go to such lengths? Out of pity for a friend like a younger sister?
Or because he needed someone who’d listen to him?
After all, one couldn’t always sit perfectly upright in elegant formalwear—sometimes one needed to sprawl out in pajamas. Melie was precisely the kind of person he could be unguarded with, free from the trappings of pretense.
Even if his kindness was genuine and not just about having a confidant, Melie was a sensible woman.
Some women believed they could remain lifelong friends with a married man—but she wasn’t one of them.
“For now, Edric,”
Melie sighed softly, then said,
ads
“I’ll decide after meeting Sir Blair.”
Though she was looking down at her skirt, she could still feel Edric’s gaze on her.
It didn’t seem like a particularly gentle look.
“And if he turns out to be good?”
Edric’s voice sounded strangely cold.
“If he’s good……”
Melie struggled to finish her sentence.
If he’s good…? She hadn’t even considered that possibility.
Because it was impossible.
How could anyone else catch her eye when her mind was filled entirely with one man?
As she hesitated over how to answer without revealing her feelings, Edric spoke again.
“Think carefully, Melie.”
His suddenly softened voice stirred something oddly deep within her.
“This marriage ended the moment you met that man. In matches like this, it’s not you who holds the choice—it’s him.”
“……”
“That merchant isn’t your match, Melie.”
Melie bit her lip and looked at Edric.
In his lapis lazuli-blue eyes, she felt as though she alone existed.
It was absurd—but despite knowing it could never be true, a sliver of doubt sprang up in her heart.
Why was he going this far? Could he possibly… like her the way she liked him?
“You deserve someone far better.”
“……”
“Trust me. I’ll find you a better husband.”
All Melie could confirm from his gentle tone was how utterly foolish she’d been.
‘Get a grip, Melie Enwood. The most he feels for you is friendship—if not outright pity.’
Edric stood from his seat and approached her. Kneeling before her, he looked up into her eyes and said,
“Tell Mother you won’t go on that match. Understand?”
His eyes shimmered like ocean waves. His voice, soft as a whisper, was almost unnervingly seductive for someone convincing a ‘younger-sister-like’ friend. But Melie refused to foolishly search for hope in it again.
Regardless, she no longer felt certain about her decision to attend the match.
If it really was a meeting directly tied to marriage, as Edric said, then she should approach it with caution.
It wasn’t something to attend lightly, just out of gratitude to the Dowager Duchess.
“I’ll think about it.”
It was the best she could say.

Haha! I liked Edric’s thinking. If only he had said it right to her face. But he is noble and does not speak badly in front of a person.
