“I’m f-fine.”

Cordelia rose with Leonard’s support. Though her body bore no physical wounds, every word Maximilian had spoken struck her mind without fail.

‘You’re a child of the devil! A beast inheriting the blood of demons!’

That sentence in particular pierced her chest and refused to leave. Her hand, gripping Leonard’s arm without thinking, tightened involuntarily. He noticed and turned to look at Cordelia.

“I’m right here. No one will lay a finger on you again.”

“…Thank you.”

He must have assumed she was frightened. Cordelia gave an awkward smile and stepped back behind Leonard.

“Brother. I’ve finally found you. Have you been well?”

“Yes. It’s been a while.”

Their conversation was calm. It was hard to believe they were brothers—one transformed into something inhuman, the other having come to kill that very brother.

People held their breath, forming a silent circle around them. Leonard walked steadily toward Maximilian.

“Judging by your appearance, you’ve sold your soul to a demon.”

“Yeah. My injuries were so severe that unless I did this, I thought I’d die.”

Maximilian straightened his hunched back with difficulty and shrugged off the cloak wrapped around his body. Cordelia, standing behind him, instinctively covered her mouth in shock.

His abdomen was already half-rotted away. His entrails hung loosely, as if devoured by worms, and even his ribs were sparsely visible.
