Beluce turned around at the sound of her scream, but the knight, blind to magic, only stared in the wrong direction.
“Get out of the way!”
Cordelia quickly ran over and yanked Beluce’s cloak. Beluce staggered backward several steps. A charred mark remained where he had just stood.
“What—what is this?”
There was no time to be flustered. The magic moved as if alive, shattering the door. At least they were fortunate that the one controlling the magic appeared before them.
“So you were inside?”
Maximilian poked his head through the wreckage of the broken door. His appearance was so terrifying that Cordelia felt a chill run down her spine.
“But why didn’t you answer me?”
With every step he took, black magic dripped from him like water onto the floor. It felt less like he was wielding magic and more like he couldn’t contain it—overflowing uncontrollably.
Seeing this, Cordelia grew puzzled. She had clearly heard that Leonard had rendered him incapable of using magic—so how?
“How are you using magic?”
“How would you know that? Only the eyes of a demon can… Ah. I see.”
He gave a short, wicked grin as if struck by sudden realization, then staggered toward her. But his movements were drastically different from usual. Though he normally limped on one leg, his posture had always remained upright and noble; now, he swayed like a drunkard, unable to hold himself steady.
“But where’s my brother? Brother! Brother! I’m here!”
And that wasn’t all. He suddenly roared loudly, his actions as erratic and chaotic as someone intoxicated. Despite clearly seeing Cordelia and the two knights in the room, he kept looking around frantically—only searching for Leonard.
