Even though the master of Embly was on the brink of death, life went on unchanged for everyone else. The atmosphere was somewhat chaotic, but soldiers hauled stones from morning to repair the ruined castle, and the cook slaughtered a young piglet and carefully prepared a meal.

Leonard sat at the head of the dining table, yet no food caught his eye. He often picked up his spoon only to cut meaninglessly through empty air. Cordelia, eating warm pumpkin soup, finally spoke.

“Eat something. You haven’t touched a bite since yesterday.”

“Cordelia.”

“Yes.”

He called her name but fell silent again for a long while. In truth, he didn’t know what to say.

Leonard let out a long, painful sigh and eventually ate what she offered him. Yet no matter what entered his mouth, it tasted dry and gritty like sand. He forced the food down into his stomach without tasting anything—no flavor, no aroma.

The meal ended in silence. Leonard finally set his spoon down, having eaten barely half of his usual portion. Cordelia, on the other hand, finished every last bit and left her bowl spotless.

“Ah, delicious. Atirai Town House is fine, but Embly’s cook is truly excellent too.”

After dabbing the corners of her mouth with a napkin, Cordelia stood up from her seat.

“Are you done eating?”

“Yeah.”

“Then shall we take a walk? The flowers have faded, but the garden is still splendid.”

Though she’d stayed at Embly Castle for only a few days, Cordelia guided Leonard with the ease of a hostess.

The summer night air was damp and chilly. Leonard found it deeply unpleasant—the sticky clothes clinging to him, Cordelia’s carefree smile, and his own helplessness.
