The churchyard in front of the free meal center teemed with people waiting for food.

Following Chairman Song’s belief that good deeds should be publicized as much as possible, several broadcast cameras were present.

As long as the cameras were rolling, Chairman Song appeared kind and gentle toward the homeless.

Gi Ju, having dropped Eun Chae off and now arriving to join the event, turned off his car engine and cupped his hands behind his head.

Perhaps due to his humble origins, Chairman Song cared more about image management than most politicians did.

Even so, no amount of effort could erase the stench emanating from his very core—yet he remained tirelessly diligent.

That was, admittedly, somewhat admirable.

Rubbing his eyes wearily with his fists, Gi Ju opened the driver’s door and stepped out.

Gwang Il, head of security, who had been watching since the car pulled neatly into the parking space, approached with a stern expression.

“Come with me.”

Gwang Il had charged over as if ready to grab Gi Ju by the collar, but mindful of onlookers, he spoke in a low voice instead.

He led Gi Ju to the incinerator behind the church.

After repeatedly checking to ensure no one was following, Gwang Il suddenly shouted without warning.

“You crazy bastard! Have you lost your mind?”

Though Gwang Il’s fury was intense, Gi Ju remained utterly expressionless—only his hair fluttered softly in the breeze.

Gwang Il stepped forward menacingly and growled at him.

“I told you not to ruin everything I’ve built! Hospitalization? That lunatic would go play her violin for Viola—or whoever—even with a 38-degree fever! What if that snake of an old man catches on, you idiot!”

“We can just falsify the documentation.”

“You barely escaped with your job intact after walking out like that. Don’t act like you still have skin on your face.”

“…….”

“Just because they call you a ‘secret weapon’ doesn’t mean you’re expendable!”

Kwon Gi Ju had an infamous reputation in their world. Once he committed to an operation, he excelled at dismantling his target down to the last speck of dust, leaving them utterly ruined.

He was so formidable that Korea Intelligence Service (KIS) dubbed him their “secret weapon.”

Assuming he’d lost interest in domestic cases after his rapid rise post-recruitment, they hadn’t expected him to volunteer for “Project Skylark.”

The operation had been launched specifically to track down Song Myung Hwan, who kept slipping through legal loopholes like an eel. They’d believed his involvement would accelerate progress dramatically—but shockingly, Kwon Gi Ju abruptly withdrew two years ago.

Fearing that Song Myung Hwan would sense something amiss, Gwang Il hadn’t dared replace him and had struggled alone ever since.

Now, Kwon Gi Ju had suddenly reversed his decision as if flipping his palm.

Naturally, Gwang Il—who despised irresponsibility above all—found it impossible to trust him, no matter how exceptional his abilities were.

Swallowing his anger, Gwang Il took a deep breath.

“Regardless of your hidden motives, Han Seung Yoon told Chairman Song that Eun Chae wasn’t feeling well and that he escorted her home. Since it was that guy speaking, the chairman believed him. If that weren’t true, you damn well better explain yourself!”

Gi Ju, who had been half-listening to Gwang Il’s scolding or pleading—hard to tell which—abruptly cut in.

“Instead of raising your blood pressure, why don’t you keep a better eye on Chairman Song?”

Glancing briefly at his titanium watch, Gi Ju added flatly,

“Three minutes have passed. You said the old man’s sharp-eyed, didn’t you?”

Gwang Il muttered a quiet curse and turned away.

Gi Ju followed slowly but stopped mid-step, suddenly recalling Chairman Song’s despicable face—and the first dirty job he’d done for him.

Back then, Song Myung Hwan, who’d secured approval for an impossible business proposal by funding Assemblyman Shin Sang Deok’s political campaigns, faced a crisis when his company suddenly came under audit. He was about to be ruthlessly sacrificed by the cunning Shin Sang Deok.

But the then twenty-six-year-old Gi Ju had acted—boldly and decisively. Without explicit orders, he’d preemptively gathered crucial intelligence and moved with animal-like instinct. He exposed everything: the draft-dodging scandal involving Shin Sang Deok’s grandson, illicit connections with other corporate heads, even sexual misconduct. He struck with devastating precision.

Thanks to him, Song Myung Hwan successfully destroyed the political career of the very assemblyman who’d intended to discard him. Shin Sang Deok was ruined beyond recovery, and Song Myung Hwan’s fortunes soared ever since.

“You’re remarkably talented. Normally, I never reuse something once it’s left my shadow—but I haven’t found another blade as sharp as you yet.”

At their reunion after two years, Chairman Song greeted him with even greedier eyes.

“I’ve switched players this time—Assemblyman Han Ji Chang.”

This time, he aimed beyond mere business expansion. Han Ji Chang was a candidate with presidential potential, which meant Chairman Song desperately needed a clean, reliable blade.

“But there’s a whole trail of scandals under him—and under me too. I’d like you to clean it all up. Neatly, just like before.”

His tone was condescending, but the old man didn’t realize he was already teetering on a cliff’s edge. Still, given his usual cunning, perhaps he should’ve been more thorough.

Admittedly, Gi Ju acknowledged what Gwang Il had said—he must have truly lost his mind. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be acting so recklessly without a solid plan.

All this time, his body had remembered Eun Chae’s touch. That memory alone had carried him through the two-year void.

Just imagining Eun Chae made his mind hazy, as if he’d overdosed on some drug—yet even in dreams, he’d never dared to lay a careless hand on her.

He feared that fragile woman might shatter and scatter into dust.

But then there was Han Seung Yoon—grabbing sudden luck with both hands, treating her like a fool without knowing his place, as if he deserved her.

How dare he scold her or lay his filthy hands on her? Gi Ju felt it wouldn’t be enough to simply break every joint in that man’s fingers.

But he’d held back—only because Eun Chae might faint from shock.

By nature, Kwon Gi Ju possessed a ruthless temperament, never hesitating to use any means necessary to collect what he was owed.

“Just a trivial emotion.”

He muttered in a rough voice, starkly unlike Eun Chae’s clear tone echoing in his ears.

Because his feelings were far too intense to be dismissed as trivial, he’d devised a plan.

And now, for the same reason, everything was about to unravel.

Out of habit, Gi Ju reached for his pocket—but realizing his jacket felt unusually light, he halted mid-step.

“What are you doing? Hurry up!”

Gwang Il called impatiently from ahead, and reluctantly, Gi Ju followed.

After the successful free meal event, Chairman Song—elated—called over even the security team for drinks.

“Fill everyone’s glasses.”

“Yes, sir.”

“You’ve all worked hard. Once this job’s wrapped up, I’ll reward you generously. Just hang in there a little longer.”

“Yes, sir.”

As Chairman Song emptied his glass, his subordinates followed suit in turn. With a tipsy grin, Chairman Song popped a piece of tuna sashimi into his mouth and couldn’t hide his satisfaction.

“Team Leader Kwon.”

“Yes, sir.”

“You seem to have handled that girl quite well.”

Gi Ju lifted his gaze to meet Chairman Song’s. The chairman was clearly in high spirits.

“How did you manage to control that prickly girl? Share your secret.”

“You flatter me.”

“It seems Han Sangmu and Eun Chae have grown closer. I heard Han Sangmu even asked about Eun Chae’s condition in detail. Given how utterly lacking in charm that girl is, I was worried she’d make things worse—but this worked out well. Very well indeed.”

Perhaps it still stung his pride that he’d been so humiliated in front of his fiancée—or maybe he had other motives.

Recalling Han Seung Yoon’s arrogant expression, Gi Ju raised his drink to his lips.

“Eun Chae even begged me to move up the wedding date! She was so eager that she called me repeatedly today!”

At that excited tone, Gi Ju’s narrow eyes narrowed further.

“Wasn’t she just looking miserable in front of Han Sangmu? Huh? Now the two of them are perfectly in sync. Once passion ignites between a man and a woman, there’s no stopping it. That’s just how it is. Still, since we never know when Eun Chae might change her mind again, don’t let your guard down. Keep watching her even more closely.”

Gi Ju set his glass down without a word.

His plan was now completely derailed.

Ultimately, because she hadn’t stayed put.

To clear her mind, Eun Chae kept herself busy. With a grunt, she lifted the rather heavy sansevieria pot and moved it to a new spot. Behind her lined up several other pots she’d already rearranged. Beads of sweat had gathered on her forehead.

At that moment, Gi Ju appeared through the dense eucalyptus leaves. Startled, Eun Chae nearly fell backward but quickly stood upright.

Gi Ju pushed the leaves aside roughly and spoke.

“I heard you moved up the wedding date.”

Chairman Song’s greedy face had bloomed with joy—but the very person who’d given him that happiness, Song Eun Chae, was here, struggling alone.

“Do you really want to marry that man?”

His gaze locked onto Eun Chae as she took a step back.

“…What’s it to you? Aren’t you just supposed to watch me until the wedding anyway?”

Eun Chae stared at him penetratingly, as if demanding an answer.

“I never said my job had anything to do with Ms. Song Eun Chae’s marriage.”

“Then what is it? What does it matter to you whether I rush or delay it?”

She deliberately chose words meant to provoke him.

He was a man of duality—where there was good, there was also evil.

Though her heart had been unsettled over that lighter, she couldn’t tolerate even that lingering feeling and wanted to uproot it entirely.

“I thought I made it clear I never considered anyone like Han Seung Yoon.”

Seeing him react just as he had before, Eun Chae truly felt something was wrong.

“Let me ask again—do you really plan to throw your life away on that brutal fool? Will you abandon the Viola you wanted to play?”

He’d insisted she stay quiet about marrying Han Seung Yoon—but the moment she moved up the wedding everyone wanted, he came chasing after her like a madman.

Why?

Eun Chae looked at him with eyes full of questions.

“Two years ago.”

“…….”

“Why did you leave me?”

Kwon Gi Ju furrowed his brows and replied brusquely,

“That doesn’t seem important right now.”

Still lost in a labyrinth, Kwon Gi Ju clearly wasn’t ready to be honest yet.

His words and actions remained as inconsistent as they’d been two years ago, and she couldn’t trust this version of him.

Then she had to cut him off.

She had no intention of being toyed with again and ending up broken alone.

She wasn’t that naive anymore.

“I slept with Han Seung Yoon.”

In that instant, Gi Ju’s face—previously devoid of expression—hardened completely.

Watching his brow furrow, Eun Chae felt goosebumps rise.

“It was in a hotel during the day of the engagement party.”

She repackaged that miserable day as a romantic encounter.

“I was attracted to Han Seung Yoon back then, but he showed no interest in me, which frustrated me. It’s the same now.”

She tried to sound calm, but her voice trembled slightly at the end—not enough to make her seem foolishly naive.

Gi Ju’s eyes reddened beneath the lids, and one corner of his mouth curled sharply upward.

He let out a low laugh—then an incredulous snort. Pushing aside the eucalyptus branches, he stepped forward.

“How dare you say you were attracted to that pathetic man.”

He advanced with heavy footsteps, stopping just a hand’s width away.

Startled by his sudden shift in demeanor, Eun Chae’s eyes widened.

Looking down into her moist, dark-brown eyes, he did a quick mental calculation.

He only needed to endure a little longer. Yet here he was, ruining everything after barely a few days—unable to hold out even sixty-one days.

“No one’s ever slept with Ms. Eun Chae except me.”

We’re a pair of fools—one with zero patience, the other terrible at lying.

“What’s worse is that even though you know that, you still tell me such infuriating lies.”

Gi Ju smiled charmingly.

Regret With All Your Might (Completed Main Story)

When scheming men desperately battle for her favor in the male harem

This one’s also on my reread list! The rivalry, scheming between the men in the imperial harem are just as intense and thrilling as in classic palace drama novels, where concubines fight to the death. Give it a read, girls! I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Synopsis:

“I am not worthy of her… but I still want to be by her side, even if only as a loyal dog…”

Those were the painful whispers of Yue Guanyi – the proud Crown Prince of the Great Qi, who was torn between deep love and a guilty conscience. Despite holding the supreme power of the Imperial Guard, he still could not forget the dark past when he was sold into a brothel.

Fate played a cruel twist when Qiu Shuzhi – a young female official who had just passed the imperial examinations with top honors – stepped into his life. She did not know that she was the one who had saved him from a tragic fate many years ago. And now, her heart was the target of pursuit for both Yue Guanyi and the powerful Empress Dowager Qin Qing.

While Yue Guanyi only dared to silently care for and protect the one he loved from afar, the  Empress Dowager Qin Qing openly expressed his feelings and did not hesitate to take advantage of his power to approach Qiu Shuzhi. The covert struggle between the two most powerful forces in the imperial court began…

Trigger warning: All men in this novel are yandere style.
