“It’s an honor to be invited.”

“Not at all. We are the ones honored to have you visit our home.”

Han Seung Yoon’s father, Representative Han Ji Chang, greeted her warmly alongside his wife, Jeon Su Kyeong.

Standing behind them, Seung Yoon’s eyes crinkled as he looked at Eun Chae.

“I heard you were unwell. Are you feeling better now?”

Eun Chae stared blankly at the hand he offered, then accepted it with a faint reply.

“Yes. Thanks to your concern.”

It was a perfect duet. Chairman Song, watching them with satisfaction, nodded as if already full just from looking.

While following Han Ji Chang and his wife toward the kitchen, Eun Chae sat at the dining table, her forced smile already gone.

The dining table, set lavishly for guests, was still being busily filled with side dishes by the housekeepers.

Chairman Song handed his jacket to his secretary and laughed heartily.

“I heard you recently launched a golf resort company.”

Jeon Su Kyeong, seated across from him, eagerly seized the opening as if she’d been waiting.

“Yes. My younger sibling has only done business overseas, so there wasn’t a spot for them here in Korea. So I decided to create one myself. Ha ha.”

“There’s nowhere easier than here to start a business—thanks to the taxes and convenient setup. And for a golf course, location is everything. I’ve actually got a few plots of land I’ve been eyeing for construction.”

“With Chairman Song’s discernment, I trust you completely. After all, we’re practically destined to become in-laws.”

Jeon Su Kyeong’s maternal family ran an American hotel business. Everyone who mattered already knew her younger sibling had set their sights on Korean ventures. Thus, their connection with Chairman Song of Dewon Group—the company that had skyrocketed to become Korea’s largest construction firm—was a natural fit.

With such a powerful maternal family and Dewon Group backing him, Representative Han Ji Chang must feel full even without eating.

“Still, Eun Chae seems rather uncomfortable. Did we invite you too soon while you’re still recovering?”

At Jeon Su Kyeong’s question, Eun Chae, who had been picking at her side dishes, looked up and offered a small smile.

“I’m sorry. I’m still a bit anemic.”

“Oh, I see.”

“And because of me, the engagement party turned out that way. I’m truly sorry.”

“That party was meant for you anyway, so don’t worry about it.”

“Eun Chae has always fainted every winter since she was little. We’ve grown accustomed to it by now—just think, ‘Ah, winter’s here again.'”

At Chairman Song’s teasing remark, Chairman Han chuckled pleasantly and turned toward Eun Chae.

“Eun Chae, you’re graduating soon, aren’t you? Your major is… viola?”

“Yes.”

“I recently heard that a Korean violist joined the Berlin Orchestra for the first time ever. Is performing abroad your goal too?”

“I haven’t thought that far ahead. My skills aren’t good enough yet.”

“How modest. Well, after marriage, pursuing that would be rather difficult anyway. I’d really like to attend your graduation recital.”

Eun Chae gave no reply, only a faint smile as she took a sip of water.

After the meal, she stepped outside under the pretense of wanting to see the garden. The backyard, decorated to Su Kyeong’s taste, remained green even in winter thanks to the pine trees.

Feeling slightly less stifled, Eun Chae stared fixedly at a droplet resting on a pine needle.

She tilted her head back to look up at the sky—raindrops began to fall, one, then two. She should have gone back inside, but hesitated, unwilling to rejoin the crowd.

Rustle—

Just then, the sound of footsteps crunching on fallen leaves echoed.

Startled, Eun Chae turned around—Seung Yoon stood there holding an umbrella. His tightly pressed lips twisted.

“Maybe you can fool my parents, but not me.”

“…”

“You’re not actually sick, are you?”

“No matter what I say, you won’t believe me anyway.”

“How shameless. Just pretend you like this engagement. It’s annoying when you act like you’re being forced into it.”

Seung Yoon clicked his tongue irritably, pulled a cigarette from his pocket, and lit it. Smoke curled darkly upward as his cheeks hollowed.

“Didn’t I make myself perfectly clear back then? Since it’s going to happen anyway, just cooperate quietly and get through it smoothly.”

“Excuse me, Mr. Han Seung Yoon.”

“Why do you act like this when you have no leverage? Your current situation and your life after marriage are practically the same, aren’t they?”

Swish—

The rain grew heavier. Eun Chae stood under the downpour, getting soaked.

Seung Yoon deliberately adjusted his umbrella, then lowered his gaze to Eun Chae’s hand.

“Even a grub knows how to roll. You play your instrument quite well, don’t you? I’ll attend your graduation recital—if you hate the idea of me hearing you play, go ahead and ruin it, just like you did the engagement party.”

At his mocking tone, Eun Chae turned her head aside and let out a soft laugh. It was almost funny—now she realized how furious he was about the ruined engagement party.

“That’s right. If you hate hearing my playing so much, maybe I should just ruin my recital too.”

“What?”

Seung Yoon frowned as if he’d misheard, then sneered bitterly.

“Do I need to be less of a gentleman for you to understand?”

Eun Chae clenched the hand she’d lowered. Rainwater seeped between her fingers, but soon stopped.

A shadow fell over her head, and then a large umbrella shielded her.

Her trembling gaze, raindrops clinging to her lashes, turned sideways.

Because of their height difference, his broad shoulders appeared first; raising her eyes further, she slowly took in his strong neck line and sharp jaw.

“Eun Chae has poor respiratory health.”

Gi Ju, who had used his free hand to pluck the cigarette from Seung Yoon’s mouth, dropped it to the ground.

Seung Yoon’s sharply angled eyes twitched at the corners. His voice vibrated with anger.

“So now you’re openly staging protests?”

Glaring sidelong at Gi Ju as if ready to tear him apart, Seung Yoon spoke again.

“You even brought this bastard along?”

Gi Ju wrapped an arm around Eun Chae’s shoulder and turned her away. She lowered her head, exhaled sharply, and stared at her shoes, now stained with mud.

“…Hah.”

Right. He always showed up when she was drowning in filth.

At the very end of despair, he’d appear as if he could save her—only to stir everything up again.

“I’m not done talking yet.”

Scowling as if bewildered, Seung Yoon stepped forward hastily and grabbed Eun Chae’s arm.

Startled, Eun Chae trembled—Gi Ju immediately twisted Seung Yoon’s wrist.

“Aaah…!”

In an instant, Seung Yoon dropped his umbrella in panic.

“Stop right there. Even I don’t know what I might do next.”

Hah. Gi Ju exhaled a low breath through his teeth and shot Seung Yoon a cold stare before pulling Eun Chae close by the shoulder.

Feeling his strong grip, Eun Chae followed him out the gate without resistance.

She bit her lip hard, trying not to worry about Gi Ju getting drenched by the rain.

He seated her in a black sedan and got into the driver’s seat.

Something—tears or rain—slid down the corner of her eye. Wiping it with her sleeve did nothing to stop it. Eventually, exhausted, she simply closed her eyes.

“Why… aren’t we going to my house?”

Standing alone in the center of the luxuriously appointed hotel suite, Eun Chae asked.

When the car first entered the parking lot, she’d intended to see just how far he’d take her.

“I reported that you fainted from anemia and were hospitalized for a day.”

He didn’t seem to care whether this was overstepping or not.

“Sure, I’ll believe that.”

“You’ll catch a cold if you stay like this. Go shower.”

With a composed expression, he handed her a fluffy bathrobe and gently nudged her toward the bathroom.

“Why did you pull me out of there? If Han Seung Yoon finds out what you did—”

Eun Chae’s pale lips trembled.

Everyone who had ever betrayed her father had been destroyed.

It didn’t matter if they were politicians, businesspeople, or mere underlings—they all met the same fate.

“…Who do you think you are?”

“…”

“Just a bodyguard—why stick your neck out unnecessarily?”

Eun Chae snatched the bathrobe from his hand and threw it to the floor.

“Why are you making such a big deal out of nothing!”

Gi Ju narrowed his eyes, one hand resting on his hip, and spoke as if the words were forced out of him.

“…Because I was worried.”

“What?”

“Why were you acting like that? What did Han Seung Yoon say?”

Under his steady gaze, Eun Chae frowned and replied,

“I wasn’t planning to stay quiet.”

She’d been about to swing her clenched fist at his face.

Until the man standing before her now—whose expression kept shifting—appeared.

He tilted his head slightly and glanced to the side.

“So you were going to hit him? Why use your hand for that? That’s my job.”

My hand? Instinctively, Eun Chae looked down at her open palm, then back up at Gi Ju.

Since their reunion, his thoughts had been unreadable, his demeanor unnervingly calm—this was the first time his true feelings showed.

Eun Chae exhaled deeply and slowly blinked.

“Are you angry right now?”

“Yes.”

Gi Ju answered, then reached both hands out to either side of her.

Bracing himself against the wall, he leaned down toward Eun Chae—close enough that his breath might brush her skin—and parted his lips.

“I seem to have even less patience than I thought.”

He straightened up and gave a faint laugh.

Eun Chae’s breath hitched, her pupils widening.

His narrow eyes darkened, his gaze intense.

“I’m still worried you’ll catch a cold.”

He pulled his hands from the wall, picked up the bathrobe from the floor, and stood tall.

His deep voice slid into her ear.

“But you don’t seem inclined to undress yourself.”

His pitch-black eyes traced slowly from her damp hair, down her wet shoulders, to the rise and fall of her chest—then back up again.

“Let me unbutton this.”

With that sigh-like murmur, the first button came undone, revealing her pale neck.

His fingertips brushed the bare skin between her open shirt.

“Do you want to touch me?”

His hand, which had been tracing near her collarbone, froze. Yet Eun Chae didn’t pull away—she looked up at him.

After a long, silent stare, he finally spoke.

“Why?”

“…”

“If I said yes, would you allow it?”

Men were always full of lies. When they whispered love, when they left, when they returned—nothing about them ever felt real.

Thrown into a world of utter darkness, Eun Chae nevertheless sensed this time was different.

His pupils shimmered like heat haze.

“If you keep looking at me like that, I’ll feel obligated to meet your expectations.”

“…”

“If you don’t want that, just shower and change into the robe.”

Eun Chae stared at Gi Ju’s large hand as it moved away from her body.

“But why do you care about me? You said to just stick to the schedule. Aren’t you interfering right now?”

“Nowhere in my plans did I include Han Seung Yoon acting arrogantly toward you.”

“So that must mean you have some kind of feeling, however small.”

Eun Chae laughed as if it were absurd, but Gi Ju didn’t smile.

“I don’t.”

“…”

“Because it’s not small.”

Eun Chae, mouth slightly agape, snatched the robe from him and disappeared into the bathroom.

When she emerged after showering, Gi Ju was gone—contrary to her worries. Still in her robe, chewing gently on the soft skin inside her mouth, Eun Chae noticed his soaked jacket draped over a chair.

If I find anything—a wallet, a phone—then I’ll leave right away.

She rummaged thoroughly through the jacket pockets.

Soon, her fingers closed around something small but weighty—without hesitation, she pulled it out.

It was a metal lighter, its gold plating worn off in patches.

Frowning, Eun Chae flipped it over to check the bottom—and her mood sank into mud.

The engraved ‘K’ clearly marked it as the lighter she’d given him in the Philippines.

A cheap lighter she’d given him because the initial matched Kwon Gi Ju’s first name.

She opened the lid and flicked it several times—no flame appeared. Judging by its condition, even refilling it with fuel wouldn’t bring it back to life.

“Why are you still carrying around a lighter whose life is clearly over? Seriously…”

What exactly did Gi Ju mean when he said his feelings weren’t small?

Her mind swirled with confused questions—then she heard the hotel room door open.

Instinctively, Eun Chae slipped the lighter into the pocket of her robe.
