Chairman Song Myung Hwan glared up the stairs with an annoyed look for a moment before turning away. Madam Ham An, who had been standing there anxiously, worried that the chairman might chase after Eun Chae, finally let out a sigh of relief.

The chairman told him, “You should go in and rest too,” and walked into his room. Gi Ju, who had been bowing respectfully, raised his eyes with worry lines creasing his forehead as soon as the door shut.

In this vast mansion, the only places Song Eun Chae could hide were either the greenhouse or her own room—but the greenhouse had already been demolished.

Gi Ju climbed the stairs: thud, thud, thud. Behind him came Madam Ham An’s half-hearted cheer, urging him to do something.

Reaching the second-floor living room, Gi Ju carefully scanned his surroundings. It was eerily silent.

Thud. Thud.

He walked deliberately toward Eun Chae’s door, his footsteps echoing. Even before he raised his arm to knock, he already knew—no one was inside.

Knock. Knock.

Predictably, no response came. Gi Ju clenched his empty hand, which had hovered in midair, and rubbed his temple.

At that moment, the image of Song Eun Chae’s face—distorted in agony, as if her breath were being squeezed out—inside the ruined greenhouse like a wasteland flashed through his mind.

Gi Ju spun around. He descended the stairs step by step at first, then suddenly broke into a sprint.

Her rigidly upright back. Her steady gait. Her hollow eyes.

All these images rampaged chaotically through his head.

Gi Ju opened the front door. Kwang Il, just pulling up in his car and stepping out from the driver’s seat, called out something—but Gi Ju strode right past him. He got into the open driver’s seat and shut the door.

A dull headache pressed heavily against his skull.
