Was she drunk? As he turned his body, spotting the faint light, Gi Ju thought so. It felt even more that way because it came from the greenhouse on the path toward the separate annex where the lodging was.
The foot that had been ignoring it and walking suddenly veered off the path right after that.
The closer he got, the more clearly the brightly lit greenhouse came into view. Gi Ju stepped inside the open entrance without hesitation. Something hard immediately crunched under his foot. When he lifted it, it was a cable tie.
Frowning slightly and craning his neck, the completely ruined greenhouse came fully into sight.
The glass walls of the greenhouse were covered in dust, the spots where flowerpots should have been were empty, and the watering can lay crumpled as if someone had stepped on it lay upside-down on the floor. It was the trace of a hasty cleanup.
In the middle of it all stood Eun Chae. Her small hands were clenched tightly, and she didn’t move an inch. Gi Ju crossed the wreckage-like greenhouse and brushed the back of his neck.
He seemed to recall hearing whispers that they were going to turn the greenhouse site into a pond. Under the pretext that the old greenhouse was an eyesore.
Gi Ju mentally retraced the whole sequence of events as he passed by her standing there.
Eun Chae lifted her bloodshot eyes and looked at him. Watching his lazy gait made her throat feel like it was blocked solid.
Soon Gi Ju bent his knees and crouched in front of a broken flowerpot. He stared for a moment at the sand covering the area around it, then swept his hand through it.
“Don’t be too heartbroken.”
“…….”
“It’s not like it’s the first or second time something’s been taken from you.”
Eun Chae barely managed to steady her uneven breathing.
Did her heart stop for a second at those words? It felt like it might have.
