Eun Chae wandered through a distant haze of consciousness.

The season was winter, just as in the present, yet there was a stark contrast in the humidity and dryness felt on her skin. Along with a falling sensation—as if plummeting somewhere, like on a roller coaster—she felt a chill rise from her heart. In that moment, Eun Chae realized this was a dream.

Amid the sound of distant bickering, she merged completely with her dream-self. She sat neatly dressed in her school uniform in the living room. The instant she felt her body stiffen from overwhelming anxiety, a thunderous shout struck her ears.

“Can’t you keep your mouth shut!”

It was Chairman Song Myung Hwan’s voice. Eun Chae swiftly turned her head toward the sound. As if to confirm this was indeed a dream, the blurred vision revealed the master bedroom door, tightly shut.

“How… how can you not even offer an excuse?”

It was her longed-for mother’s voice—closer to a pitiful sob.

The moment Eun Chae instinctively tried to rise, her path was blocked. The chairman’s secretary, who had been standing guard in the center of the living room, stepped directly in her way.

Even as she glared up with sharp eyes, the secretary met her gaze with a calm face, utterly unthreatened. Though the man said nothing, she could feel it—a silent warning not to move.

Eun Chae couldn’t move. It was a habit ingrained from years of being controlled since childhood.

Foolishly.

“Where do you think you’re going!”

Her mother’s voice rose, cracking hoarsely at the end.

“Let go of that! Are you going to let go or not?!”

A metallic edge rang from Chairman Song Myung Hwan’s voice—menacing.
