The carriage raced on and on. The heavy rain had turned the ground into a sea of mud, causing the carriage to sway violently, but it was still bearable.

Yet, after about ten minutes of travel, the carriage suddenly lurched to one side and came to a complete stop.

“What’s happening?”

Joanna asked, opening the window that connected to the driver’s seat. Ben, who had been lashing the horses with his whip, wiped the rainwater from his face and answered in a troubled tone.

“The wheel seems stuck in the mud, Joanna.”

“What? Then…”

“Let’s get out, Joanna.”

Riena quickly assessed the situation and pulled her hood over her head.

“What are you talking about?”

“We have to get out and pull the wheel free ourselves.”

Ben gasped in alarm and tried to stop her.

“No, my lady! I’ll do it!”

“Uncle, there’s no time for you to do it alone. We’ll help. Joanna, hurry and get out.”

Riena stepped down from the carriage without anyone’s escort. Her foot sank instantly into the mud upon landing, making her stagger, but she quickly regained her balance.

She then reached out to take Joanna’s hand as she alighted from the carriage, offering her an escort.

Joanna’s face still looked tense and uneasy. Riena assumed she was worried they might get caught and tugged gently at her arm.

“Joanna, there’s no time to worry. If we delay even a little, Mother might realize what’s happened and send someone after us. Let’s push the carriage quickly.”

“Oh… right.”

Joanna followed Riena in a dazed, sluggish manner, as if under a spell. Riena rolled up her sleeves and began pushing the carriage. Her shoes and dress hem were soaked through with muddy water, but she paid it no mind.

But it was impossible for two women to accomplish a task even a grown man would struggle with. The carriage jolted slightly but refused to escape the mud.

Ben, who had climbed down from the driver’s seat, kept tugging the reins to pull the horse forward, yet no amount of effort would budge it. All that grew louder was the horse’s distressed whinnying.

“This isn’t working.”

Riena finally stood upright and glanced back toward the mansion. They had already traveled a fair distance, so the mansion was quite far behind—but any commotion here might still draw attention.

“We’ll get caught if we stay like this. Might as well ride the horse directly…”

Riena, about to declare she would ride the horse herself, suddenly fell silent as a thought flashed through her mind.

Rain and horses—they brought back bad memories.

“No. It’s better if we just walk to the village.”

Ben jumped in alarm and hurried over to her.

“My lady, it’s at least an hour’s walk to the village from here. With this foul weather, it’ll take even longer.”

“An hour is perfectly walkable. Good thing I wore my hunting boots.”

Riena spoke calmly, trying to sound indifferent, and checked the travel bag she’d left inside the carriage.

She’d only taken the essentials from the mansion, so the bag wasn’t overly large—but that was only true if they were riding in a carriage. Carrying it for over an hour on foot would be quite burdensome.

She opened the bag, hastily stuffed the hair ribbon—her father’s final gift—into her pocket, and turned away without hesitation.

Leaving the bag behind stung, but she knew she had to face reality with clear eyes.

‘I can buy new clothes and necessities once we reach the Berna estate.’

As for food, they could get it in the village, so there was nothing urgent they needed right now.

“Joanna, let’s go quickly.”

“Oh dear, my lady! If you go like this, how will I ever face the Count again!”

“Thank you, Uncle Ben! Father will be grateful to you too!”

Riena flashed a bright smile at the flustered Ben and immediately began walking toward the village.

“My lady, I’ll come with you!”

Joanna, who had been fidgeting in place, finally dashed after Riena when she was about thirty paces ahead.

The rain grew heavier. Riena tried to stride briskly, wiping the rain from her face, but kept sinking into the mud with every step.

She could barely walk quickly—she had to tense her legs just to avoid falling, and exhaustion crept in fast. Joanna, trailing beside her, began breathing heavily too.

“My lady, are you really all right?”

“If you want to turn back, go ahead.”

Riena kept walking as she spoke.

“What?”

“I’m doing this for my own future, but you don’t have to suffer like this. You don’t have to remain my personal maid forever. If you want, you can go back.”

“My lady…”

Joanna cast a reluctant glance back at the mansion, but that was all. Clutching her skirts with both hands, she resumed walking after Riena.

After walking wordlessly for about twenty minutes, they heard the sound of horse hooves through the rain, and the ground trembled faintly. Riena stopped and turned toward the mansion.

‘Mother couldn’t possibly know already… Could it be Uncle Ben?’

Maybe Ben had managed to free the carriage and was rushing after them.

But contrary to her hope, the rider who appeared was the Captain of the Knights from the Count’s household. Behind him trailed two or three knights whose faces she recognized.

“My lady!”

He reined in his horse abruptly and leapt down. Riena tried to flee instantly, but her foot wouldn’t pull free from the mud, and he seized her wrist.

“This isn’t fit weather for a stroll. If you catch a chill…”

Riena let out a hollow laugh at his calm pretense of calling this a “stroll.”

“Do I really look like I’m out for a stroll to you, Sir?”

“…”

“You know as well as I do that this isn’t a stroll.”

“You’d best avoid causing further trouble, my lady.”

“Why? Is it because Mother can’t possibly tell Viscount Rotman that I fled home to avoid marrying his son? Or is it too shameful to let Lord Belliar see our house in such disarray?”

“My lady! How long will you keep acting like a child! If the late Count could see this…”

“Oh, you’ve chosen your words well.”

Riena wrenched her arm from his grip with all her might. He nearly stumbled but caught himself, only for her to shake off his supporting hand as well.

“If Father saw this situation now, I think he’d respect my choice. What do you think, Sir?”

The Captain of the Knights had no answer. Though he now followed the Countess’s orders, he had once been a knight who deeply respected Count Daik.

Even to his eyes, the Countess’s decision was incomprehensible—so shocking it would make the late Count leap from his coffin in outrage.

But he couldn’t let Riena go like this. After a brief hesitation, he hoisted her forcibly onto his shoulder.

“Sir!”

Riena pounded his back with her fists, trying to break free. Though she hit him with all her strength, the Captain didn’t flinch.

Just as Riena considered biting his arm to stop him from forcing her onto the horse,

the ground vibrated once more, and distant hoofbeats rang out—from the direction opposite the mansion.

That meant someone was riding toward the mansion through this downpour at this hour.

Caught off guard, the Captain of the Knights froze in place. Riena, too, forgot her resistance and stared upside-down at the blurry figure approaching in the distance.

‘Could it be Raoul?’

Raoul, who since childhood always seemed to know exactly when she was in trouble and would appear without fail—she felt an unfounded but stubborn hope that he had come to rescue her again.

But the man who appeared before her in an instant was not Raoul.

His face was hidden beneath a black hood, but Riena, who had grown up watching Raoul since childhood, was certain—the hooded man was larger in build than Raoul, the knight.

Then, perhaps he was visiting Countess Daik? Yet even as that thought crossed her mind, Riena couldn’t tear her eyes away from him. Strangely, she felt an irrational certainty that he had come for her.

Indeed, he stopped his horse directly before Riena. One knight followed behind him.

“Are you visiting the Daik estate?”

The Captain of the Knights, having finally managed to mount Riena on his horse, approached the man and asked politely.

“It’s late. Please return tomorrow when it’s light.”

Ignoring his words entirely, the man dismounted lightly and strode straight toward Riena, brushing past the Captain. The Captain stepped in front of him.

“I’ll say it once more—return when it’s light. If you proceed like this, even a guest of the estate will be subdued by force.”

“I have business with Lady Daik.”

The moment Riena heard his voice, an odd feeling washed over her. Though she was certain she’d never heard it before, it felt strangely familiar.

And the instant he removed his hood, she was utterly shocked.

My Arch-enemy Sealed My Memory and Said That He is My Husband

This is an incredibly captivating story that you absolutely shouldn’t miss! I’ll give a brief introduction here, and below you’ll find a detailed synopsis of the plot.

The female lead is a fierce and powerful demon king. The male lead is a once-in-a-millennium celestial lord, admired by the entire cultivation world.

They are equally matched, legendary rivals who have battled for centuries.

In the final duel, the female lead is gravely injured. The male lead saves her, seals her memories, and hides her true identity. He tells her that he is her fiancé. His entire life has been flawless—except for the one thing he never expected, never controlled, and never wanted to control: falling for his greatest enemy. She is his inner demon, his obsession.

When the female lead regains her memories, she is furious at his deception.

She makes his life a living hell.

And somehow, the male lead—possibly a total masochist—doesn’t mind at all. In fact, he’s happy she’s paying attention to him.

Yep, we’re back to my favorite trope: male lead suffering. If you love this kind of story, jump into the pit with me now!!!

Intro

Dong Xia lost her memory.

Her handsome and extremely powerful fiancé Li Qing comforted her: “It’s okay if you can’t remember. I’ll always be with you.”

Everyone thought Dong Xia’s ancestors must have burned incense to get such a perfect fiancé. He was the number one person in the immortal realm, yet he remained chaste and only loved her.

…

The day before marrying her fiancé, Dong Xia finally remembered everything.

She wasn’t suffering from memory loss at all.

Her arch-enemy had made her fake her death, destroyed her cultivation, replaced her memories, and pretended to be her deeply in love fiancé.

No wonder he said, “It’s okay if you can’t remember”!

Dong Xia laughed coldly as she pulled out her long knife: Li Qing, prepare to die 🙂

*

Li Qing, as the supreme being of the immortal realm, was the people’s shining beacon.

The only unknown stain in his life was his affection for Dong Xia, the ruler of the demon realm.

In the final battle of the war between immortals and demons, the sky collapsed and the earth shattered. The ruler of the demon realm was finally slain under the sword of the supreme being of the immortal realm, and everyone in the immortal realm applauded.

The cultivation world lost a ruler of the demon realm.

And in the back mountain of Li Qing’s cave dwelling, he secretly hid away a fiancée.

Notes:

1. The female lead is white on the outside, black on the inside, and the queen of flattery; the male lead repeatedly tests the edge of darkness, a VIP guest at the crematorium.

2. Fantasy cultivation world setting.
