“What is all this commotion?”

Apparently having missed the full story, she began scolding Riena.

“Taking a walk in the rain at this hour of night? Do you have any idea what kind of misunderstanding Viscount Rotman might have if he sees you!”

Even amid all this, Riena found it simply laughable that her mother was still calling it a “walk.” It was equally absurd that, while worrying about being discovered by Viscount Rotman, she was shouting so loudly.

“Mother, if you speak so loudly, Viscount Rotman might wake up.”

Only then did the Countess lower her voice.

“Before Viscount Rotman wakes up, you must go inside right this—”

Her whisper, delivered with a flushed face, suddenly shifted to Cassel standing beside Riena. Her expression hardened instantly.

“You don’t mean to say….”

“I can guess what you’re thinking, but it’s not like that.”

“Then what is it?”

“It’s not elopement—it’s a formal proposal.”

“What?”

The Countess’s voice, which had just softened, rose again.

“A proposal? What do you—”

Riena showed her the back of her left hand. On Riena’s pale, slender ring finger sparkled the diamond ring Cassel had placed there—the very ring neither Viscount Rotman nor Johannes had remembered to bring, despite coming to discuss marriage.

Upon seeing the ring, the Countess let out a sharp cry and grabbed Riena’s hand.

“Take it off at once! How dare you accept a proposal without my permission, as the elder of this house!”

Riena forcefully shook off the Countess’s grip. With a meaningful glance from her, Cassel quickly pulled the letter from earlier out of his coat and handed it to the Countess.

Riena explained.

“If you read it, you’ll see—it’s a letter from Father. Though not a formal proposal, he did suggest arranging a marriage with this gentleman.”

“What? What?”

The Countess, who had barely glanced at the letter before, finally began to read it.

“Then Father has already approved this marriage—it’s hardly improper procedure. In fact, it’s entirely legitimate.”

“Legitimate procedure? Your father is already dead, and this man only shows up long after the funeral! How can you call this legitimate!”

“It was a marriage already agreed upon between the heads of our houses long ago. What’s so unreasonable about that?”

“I won’t accept it! Riena Daik! You are still a Daik, and you must obey me!”

Fuming, the Countess tried to tear the letter to shreds—but luckily, it remained intact, thanks to a preservation spell.

“Mother!”

Even after Riena snatched the letter away in alarm, the Countess couldn’t contain her rage and stamped her foot.

“You!”

Her eyes wide with fury, the Countess lunged at Riena—but Cassel swiftly stepped in front of her. Her anger, now directionless, turned squarely on the bewildered Cassel.

“Who do you think you are! Trying to take my daughter away! Only I have the right to decide her marriage!”

“Strictly speaking, that’s not true. The late Count left me a letter entrusting me with his daughter’s hand, and I intend to honor his final wish by taking her as my wife.”

“And who are you to decide that! Even if you beg, the Temple won’t issue a marriage vow without my consent!”

Just as the Countess shouted with all her might, Viscount Rotman—who had been drawn by the commotion—suddenly appeared and overheard everything, utterly shocked.

“A marriage vow? What on earth are you talking about, my lady? And who exactly is this man?”

“It’s exactly as it sounds. I—”

Riena tried to speak, but Cassel gently shook his head to stop her and spoke instead.

“Lady Daik and I are engaged.”

“Since when? Lady Daik is promised to me—”

“I was told you never even formally proposed in the first place.”

That was the truth. Viscount Rotman sputtered for a moment, then resorted to an utterly unreasonable excuse that made onlookers pity him.

“I was going to propose at dawn!”

“Her Ladyship has made it clear she has no intention of accepting your proposal.”

Again, he was left speechless. His face flushed red and then pale as he turned to Riena and shouted.

“How dare you! A nobody like you dares mock me?”

Riena was dumbfounded. Though she held no title herself, she was still of the illustrious Daik comital house—she had no reason to endure being called “a nobody” by a mere viscount.

Seeing Riena remain silent in utter disbelief, Viscount Rotman mistook her shock for fear and grew even more arrogant. Without a care for anyone’s presence, he hurled crude insults directly at her.

“I heard you were chaste—just how wanton must you have been for men to cling to you the moment they get a chance? Are you even a maiden, or have you already been with countless men? Hah! Did you seduce Lord Belliar with your body? Did you sneak into his bed at night?”

“……”

“And now that you’ve chosen this man over Lord Belliar, I suppose his skills in bed must be superior, right?”

Riena could endure no more. This wasn’t just an insult to her—it was a disgrace to the entire Daik name and a stain on the honor of the late Count, who had raised her with such deep affection.

“Right now—”

But just as Riena opened her mouth to confront him, Cassel reached out and gently restrained her. Shaking his head slightly, he fixed Viscount Rotman with a cold stare.

“It is Lady Daik’s right to choose her spouse. A true gentleman, even when rejected, respects a lady’s wishes and steps aside with dignity. Yet you—you not only fail to show her respect, but openly dishonor her?”

“What?”

And from his next words, Riena finally understood why he could speak with such authority.

“How much money do you think I lent to Countess Daik! I intended to forgive the entire debt through this marriage—and now you tell me it’s off? Is this some conspiracy? Did you think I wouldn’t get my money back if you just ran away?”

Riena let out a bitter laugh and glared fiercely at Countess Daik. When their eyes met, the Countess quickly looked away.

‘She was in debt? And planned to clear it through marriage?’

Riena knew the Count and Countess had often argued over finances during her father’s lifetime. Though he never showed it before her, Riena was no naive child unaware of her family’s affairs.

She’d heard the Countess was extravagant and occasionally gambled. The Count had once declared he’d cut off her allowance if she gambled again.

‘Even so, their situation couldn’t have been so dire as to borrow from Viscount Rotman.’

But given how urgently the Countess had pushed for Riena’s marriage, things must have been worse than she’d assumed.

“So whether Lady Daik accepts my proposal or not—she’s still going to be my wife!”

Viscount Rotman reached out to snatch Riena’s wrist, spouting utter nonsense.

But in the blink of an eye—faster than Riena could register—Cassel drew the sword that had just been at his hip and pointed it squarely at Viscount Rotman. The Viscount immediately raised both hands and stumbled backward.

“W-wait! Let’s talk this out—”

“I will not tolerate you laying a hand on her Ladyship.”

Cassel’s tone had shifted—it was no longer polite speech, but plain.

Riena realized it belatedly: Cassel was far more suited to plain speech than formal address. And it made perfect sense.

Because he was a Duke—one who stood above them all. She now understood that his earlier use of honorifics had been merely for her sake.

“How much was the debt?”

“T-that is…”

“No matter the amount, I’ll repay you tenfold.”

“T-tenfold…?”

“If you have any complaints, file a formal grievance with House Winkler.”

“Wink…ler?”

No one in the Empire failed to recognize that name. After muttering it to himself, Viscount Rotman instantly threw himself to his knees before Cassel.

“I-I-I-I’m so sorry! I had no idea you were His Grace the Duke…!”

Could this groveling man truly be the same one who had behaved as if he feared nothing in the world before her—especially when rumors claimed he’d killed his own wife? Watching him prostrate himself so abjectly was utterly ridiculous.

At the same time, it felt unreal.

‘Has timid Case really changed this much?’

When he first arrived at the Daik estate, Case had been so shy he could barely look teenage Riena in the eye. The approach of any grown man would send him into near panic.

Though he’d gradually improved while learning swordsmanship from Count Daik and living alongside Riena, he’d still retained a timid streak even when he left the estate.

What could possibly have happened in those ten years to transform that boy into this man?

While Riena pondered Cassel’s hardened face, he sheathed his sword. Taking this as a cue, Viscount Rotman scurried back into the mansion—likely to pack his bags the moment he reached his room.

“So you’re the Duke…”

Countess Daik trembled violently. Cassel gave her a cold look and asked quietly,

“Do you have anything further to say?”

“N-no, I…”

“Then I’ll take it you have no objections to Lady Daik departing with me. We shall head to the capital.”

He turned to Riena this time.

“Is there anything you’d like to take with you?”

“A…”

Riena looked back at the estate where she’d spent her whole life, her eyes filled with sorrow. There were so many things she wished to take:

The apple tree her birth mother—whose face she barely remembered—had planted for her; the backyard swing her father had hung for her when she was little; the vast fields where she and her father had ridden horses together every spring.

No—perhaps what she truly wished to take was the memories she’d made here.

I still don’t get how the countess has this much power when she’s not even blood related. Like I get she’s the elder but then when riena turns of age shouldn’t she be the proxy head or smth?? Idk I feel like that’s more plausible.
