To You, Whom I Shouldn't Love (24 Chapters Left to Complete) - Chapter 6
“There’s never been such a commotion.”
Joanna explained the situation outside as she brought dinner to Riena, who had stayed in her room all day.
“Viscount Rotman was making a huge fuss, demanding they bring you to him at once. In the middle of it all, Lord Belliar came down to the dining hall for dinner, so the two of them ended up running into each other.”
“Is that so?”
“Yes. The atmosphere was absolutely intense. Viscount Rotman looked like he wanted to grab Lord Belliar by the collar, but he couldn’t bring himself to actually do it. What could he do? After all, the other party was Lord Belliar himself.”
Joanna shrugged her shoulders.
“So, miss, you’ll accept Lord Belliar’s marriage proposal, won’t you?”
“I don’t know.”
Riena lifted her spoon absentmindedly and scooped up some soup.
“What do you mean, ‘I don’t know’? Are you still thinking it over?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“What do you mean, ‘why’?”
“Well, the other party is Lord Belliar! Of course you should accept if someone like him proposes!”
Riena stirred her soup without eating it and muttered softly.
“But I hardly know anything about Lord Belliar.”
“You can get to know him gradually! He’s not just anyone—it’s Lord Belliar! How can you say you won’t marry him just because you don’t know him well yet? Noble marriages aren’t made out of love anyway.”
“That’s true. But still…”
“But still what?”
Despite Joanna’s urging, Riena bit her lip tightly and said nothing.
“Miss?”
“Nothing. It’s nothing.”
Riena shoved a piece of bread into her mouth to avoid answering. As she chewed mechanically, she sank deep into thought.
‘Something feels off.’
She recalled her conversation with Johannes.
〈I mustered up courage and sent a marriage proposal to House Daik, but never received a reply. Heartbroken by the rejection, I left the capital to travel, only to hear belatedly of the Count’s passing.〉
〈…A marriage proposal? When exactly…?〉
〈I sent it early this year, so it’s been about half a year now.〉
〈Half a year…〉
She had never heard a word about it from Count Daik.
‘Not only that, but he didn’t even send a reply. That’s not like Father at all.’
He never even asked for Riena’s opinion and simply remained silent? That didn’t match the father she knew.
If it had been Count Daik, he would have first asked Riena herself. If she had agreed to the proposal, he would have considered it seriously; if she had refused, he would have sent a polite, formal rejection to House Belliar.
Yet he did nothing at all?
‘That’s strange.’
Something was subtly amiss. That’s why Riena couldn’t accept Johannes’s goodwill at face value.
She wasn’t accusing him of anything—but for some inexplicable reason, she felt uneasy about accepting his proposal outright.
‘I suppose there’s really no other way.’
After swallowing the bread she had been chewing, Riena headed to the dressing room. There, she pulled out a travel bag hidden deep in the wardrobe.
Watching her carefully select only the essentials and pack a minimal amount, Joanna’s lips twitched.
“Miss, you’re not really planning to run away…!”
“Shh.”
As Joanna’s voice grew louder, Riena quickly pressed her index finger to her lips. Joanna’s eyes widened in shock, and she clapped both hands over her mouth, then nervously glanced around the empty room.
“I can’t just sit here and marry Viscount Rotman.”
Joanna hesitated a moment before whispering,
“Then why not just accept Lord Belliar’s proposal?”
She studied Riena’s expression as she continued,
“Even a maid like me, living in the far south of the Empire, knows how famous Lord Belliar is. He’s handsome and kind-hearted—I’ve heard many young ladies admire him. Besides, House Belliar is prestigious and incredibly wealthy.”
“So what?”
“He came all this way just for you and asked for your hand in marriage—yet you’re seriously planning to run away? I truly don’t understand why you’re doing this.”

“Joanna.”
Riena set her travel bag on the bed, cutting off Joanna’s words.
“Marriage is a serious matter. Leaving aside whether I hardly know Lord Belliar, I can’t choose him just to escape Viscount Rotman.”
“But he proposed to you knowing all that.”
“I know. That’s exactly why I can’t accept. I won’t use someone so genuinely good. And besides…”
She almost let something slip before quickly clamping her mouth shut. Joanna, puzzled, asked again.
“And besides… what?”
“Nothing. It’s nothing.”
She couldn’t bring herself to say that Johannes Belliar seemed suspicious in some way. He was beloved by everyone, and if she voiced doubts about his character, people would accuse her instead.
But still…
“In any case, don’t drag Lord Belliar into this.”
Joanna sighed deeply.
“Then where do you plan to go? You don’t even have a place to stay.”
“Raoul is currently at the Berna estate. I’ll go there first, ask for his help, and then head to the capital to find Aunt Letisha.”
“But you couldn’t even send a letter.”
Riena snapped the bag shut and replied firmly,
“That’s exactly why I have to go to the Berna estate in person—to meet Raoul and ask for his help. He’ll listen to me, so don’t worry.”
She had never once considered the possibility that Raoul might refuse her request. They’d always been close like siblings, always helping each other since childhood.
Yet Joanna still looked deeply uncertain.
“But it’s a full day’s carriage ride from here to the Berna estate. How will you manage alone all that way…?”
Riena lowered her voice as if sharing a secret.
“Uncle Ben will help me.”
Ben had been the stablemaster and coachman for House Daik for many years.
He had always treated Riena warmly, saying she resembled his late nephew, and even after Count Daik’s death, he continued to regard her with sympathy. His unwavering kindness convinced Riena she could trust him.
She would take Ben’s carriage to the nearest village, then switch to another carriage there. The estate’s people were fond of her; they would surely help her hide without hesitation.
Once she reached the Berna estate and met Raoul, everything afterward would go smoothly.
But could she really pull it off? Despite her confident words, Riena was overwhelmed by an inexplicable anxiety. What if Ben didn’t help after all? Or even if he did, what if her stepmother’s men caught her before she could escape?
A sudden chill ran through her. Rubbing her arms, she looked out the window. The sky, overcast since morning, was now filled with dark storm clouds ready to burst at any moment.
On the day her father died, the sky had looked just like this. To suppress the creeping unease deep in her heart, Riena resolved to focus only on good thoughts.
The wide fields where she used to ride horses in spring, the peaceful meals shared with her father, her mother’s portrait she secretly looked at whenever she felt down.
Thinking only of the things she loved made her feel a little better. She forced her drooping lips upward into a smile.
“It’ll be alright.”
She kept repeating those words to herself.
“It’ll be alright. When the morning sun rises, all your worries will vanish, Ria.”
Those were the words her father used to whisper like a spell whenever she grew frightened by the rain.
[This is the timeline separator]Fortunately, Coachman Ben stood by Riena. At dawn, he quietly prepared a two-horse carriage and helped her slip out of the mansion unnoticed.
“Miss, I’ll personally escort you all the way to Baron Berna’s estate.”
Riena handed him her bag and shook her head.
“You’d be found out. It takes two full days to travel there and back—you can’t just leave the estate unattended that long.”
As Ben loaded her luggage, he looked troubled.
“But I can’t possibly let you go alone.”
“Joanna’s coming with me, and the estate folk will help too. Don’t worry so much.”
“But…”
“We shouldn’t be standing around here. We need to leave right away. Understood?”
Though still unconvinced, Ben gently took Riena’s hand as she climbed into the carriage. Joanna, hood pulled low over her face, anxiously scanned the surroundings before following her inside.
Soon, the carriage set off. Riena gazed back wistfully at the receding Daik manor.
‘When will I be able to return?’
She had always known she would leave someday. She had long since come of age, and if she married, leaving the estate would be the natural next step.
But she never imagined she’d have to flee so abruptly—like a fugitive. With her relationship with her stepmother utterly broken, this might be the last time she ever saw her childhood home.

She’d left so much behind. All the memories she and her family had made since birth remained in that place. If only she’d known, she would’ve lingered longer to cherish them.
But Riena quickly shook off her lingering sentimentality and closed the window. What mattered now wasn’t reminiscing about the past, but preparing for the future ahead.

“How dare you!”
“How dare you make me love you, only to cast me aside as nothing more than a friend?!?
“I will never accept that.”
“I will never let you return to him.”
“Even if I have to burn myself to ashes.”
“Even if I must shatter my purity, my dignity, my very soul.”
“I will never let you escape me!”

This was the first novel that introduced me to the matriarchal genre. I’ve read it three times already!
At first, the male lead despised the female lead. Later, he misunderstood that she liked him, so he condescendingly and reluctantly reciprocated her feelings.
Then, he suddenly discovered that she was kind to everyone in the same way, and there was already someone she cherished in her heart, and that person was not him.
The male lead couldn’t believe it, he became angry and crazy. He was determined to capture her body and heart by any means necessary.

“Why should I care about that, Joanna?”
Nah this is foul. Joanna’s a commoner this is the only way for her to survive. I don’t blame her. Pretty classist sentiment this is.

I still don’t get how the countess has this much power when she’s not even blood related. Like I get she’s the elder but then when riena turns of age shouldn’t she be the proxy head or smth?? Idk I feel like that’s more plausible.
Wat happened to the other guy—raol or smth??? Wasn’t as going to go to him first?
