Laila acutely noticed that very faint, indistinct sound—so soft it was like the whisper of a dress trailing across the floor. She scanned her surroundings with wide eyes, but all she could see was thickening fog.

—Chrisrad….

A voice calling her name pierced through the mist once more. It wasn’t a hallucination. Nor was it the wind whistling through branches, stirring up confusion. The voice was clear and distinct, calling out to her.

“Who’s there!”

Laila shouted after taking a sharp breath. But there was no reply—only the lingering echo of her own cry, drifting ghostlike through the forest before vanishing.

—Chrisrad….

Laila shouted again.

“Show yourself! Don’t hide like a coward!”

Could it have been Karsh’s voice? Laila drew a ragged breath, acutely aware of her heart pounding faster and faster. It felt like it might be him—and yet, somehow, it didn’t….

“Halliwell!”

The fog had now blanketed the forest so completely that she couldn’t see even a hand’s breadth ahead. Not a single ray of light penetrated the darkness, as though night had fallen. Only shadowy figures shuffled past her like damned souls trudging toward hell.

With the quiet crunch of dry grass and tree roots underfoot, Karsh Halliwell appeared.

Laila was overwhelmed by a strange unease, as if he’d materialized from nothingness. It wasn’t simply that he’d been hidden by the mist; she felt strongly that his very physical presence hadn’t existed here until this moment.
