His words entered Laila’s mind only to slip out again like sand. So much had happened all at once that it was difficult to accept things one by one, carefully and steadily.

“So Karsh Halliwell was a doppelgänger.”

Unconsciously, Laila had been flattering him, yet she hadn’t even noticed that fact herself.

A small, delicate breath echoed quietly through the misty forest. It was Laila’s. Like someone stranded in the heart of a snow-covered valley, white vapor continuously streamed from her lips. Yet she didn’t feel cold.

“What are you?”

At Laila’s question, the man’s black eyebrows twitched slightly. Strangely, that tiny movement seemed profoundly human.

“Are you asking for my name?”

Laila clutched her arms tightly around herself and shook her head vigorously.

“Name, identity—anything is fine. Just explain yourself to me. I can’t comprehend you. Your very existence.”

“Foolish creature.”

Laila snapped her eyes open and glared at him. But when she met those red eyes—so identical to her own, eyes she hadn’t seen since her mother’s death—her chest churned strangely once more.

He spoke.

“I am the most terrifying nightmare appearing in human legends. I am the one who taught human mages the astrology of falling stars. I wield wrath, pride, and knowledge. I am the one who revealed to the first witch the properties of every plant and gemstone. I am the right hand of the one who can summon all demons. My name is Badin.”

His tone was highly rhythmic, sounding like he was reciting a song or a poem. She recalled an old legend that the finest bards of antiquity secretly carried small jars containing demons, using the lure of beautiful verses or songs to compel them into service.
